Life Post Mba In Uk Top 5 B Schools - 26-01-2008, 01:22 AM

I have started this thread to know more about the life after MBA in UK in terms of placements, acceptability in cos. there, visa related issues etc.

I have been admitted to Cranfield School of Mgmt. which have been there in top 5 UK MBA collages. I have got admission to the IIM-A, PGP-PMP course which is having its first batch being placed now. The average salary is ranging to 20-22 lacs in india with infrastructure, consulting cos., non profit making fin.cos./bodies..

I have been in SBI for 8 yrs in managment role in the field of retail and corp. bkg. At this point of time, I have little idea about the life in UK post MBA though it is widely claimed that 97% of their students get placed in 3 months, etc. Is there anyone from UK or having some knowledge on the issue may advise over the issue?

Regarding my point of view, it may be little off the real track off my field i.e ret n corp. bkg after the PGP-PMP course in IIM-A but the placements and recognition is well in India.
On the other side, UK is promising to be a better place for MBA-Finance for me and thus would be a further boost to my career. But doubt is that whether will there be really some carrer in the mgmt in the field of finance or consultancy for me - an Indian/non-EU person?

Please some body guide me as well post your issues too.

Rajesh

Also, can someone elaborate prospects for IT professionals. A comparision between prospects post UK MBA and reputed one yr programs in India (ISB, IIM-A, IIM-C) will be useful in making a decision.

No idea about Cranfield MBA. But LBS from its employment report seems to suggest that most of their MBA graduates(say 95% to 97%) are placed within 3 months of graduation.
It seems to be the same with Oxford and Cambridge, but the kind of companies and jobs seem to be better in LBS.
As for as IIMA PMP or PGPX or IIMC PGPEX is concerned, it looks like mostly the jobs will be in India that too predominantly in conglomerates like ADA, Aditya Birla group, Reliance, DLF etc. and a few rare consulting jobs; ofcourse IT guys, who are a substantial portion of the student body seem to mostly go back to the IT sector. Very few people get job postings abroad (may be about 10%).

In the case of ISB, the FT top-20 rank seems to have improved the placements- last year, nearly 16% got placements abroad and looks like larger % of people are geting placed in consulting, but very few Finance jobs.

So, if you are looking for a global career and jobs in the Finance sector and if you you get admit and can afford it, you may be better off studying in the top-3 B-schools in UK, namely LBS, Cambridge and Oxford.
If you want to make a career in India and if you are aspiring for a general management or business development type of career but not Finance, then you may be better off joining PGPX pr PGPEX or ISB.
But given the current global economic scenario, it might be safer for you to study in one of the top schools in India rather than UK; job scene may be bleak in UK just now and for another year or two, particularly so in the financial services industry. ISBand IIMs may still be able to help you find a fairly ok job after graduation, even in these difficult conditions.

So, your decision has to be based on your MBA career goals.
IIM and ISB brand will be superior to LBS, Judge and SAID brand, if you are going to make a career in India.

This is purely my personal opinion.

Cranfield has one of the best placement records in UK. Figures for last year are 97% placed within 3 months of graduation (From what I remember this statistic is slightly better than that of Said and Judge) with the average salary being the 2nd highest in UK (or may be it is the 3rd, but I am sure it is among the top 3).

You might be right about Crafield; but in most global ranking of MBAs, the top 3 UK schools are LBS , Oxford and Cambridge. It is possible that in UK cranfield is seen as better than Judge and SAID, but outside of UK, the above 3 seem to be seen as the top 3.
If you come back to India and start looking for jobs, I would think Cambridge and Oxford will be more regarded than Cranfield.

And in the Indian job market, most probably ISB and IIM PGPX and PGPEX will be more acceptable and valued than Oxford and Cambridge, I would think.

I largely agree with NOTHING1954.

There is one contrarian view:

If you are thinking short term, don't have so much of money or don't know how to fund your studies (most of the UK instns. are not offering student loans), stick to IIM/ISB. They are safer bet and invovle low investment.

In the long term, however, in my opinion, there is no match to the brand of Oxford, LBS or Cambridge ( I am at SBS) with Indian institutues. Ten years down the line (post MBA), the difference in position, responsibility, compensation, etc. gets more pronounced!

Grt thread and discussion....
Let's widen the scope by making it broader and condiering few middle rung colleges as well.....

What could be a better option : A middle rung UK B school say Lancaster,Stratclyde ,Leeds Or an Indianize one year program such as SP Jain Dubai, Great Lakes IM, PGPX by SP Jain Mumbai, IMI etc......

The job prospects by any of above Indian school will be better but might be restricted to Indian sub continent......Although some schools such as SP Jain Dubai may help gain international exposure and provide oppurtunity in Singapore Dubai and other East Asian countries.....

Comon guys keep pouring ur thoughts.......

^^^ On a global scale, I would say a mid-tier UK University would be better than Dubai, Great Lakes, etc.
