Re: IIM Indore EXPGP Interview and Beyond - 08-06-2009, 11:06 PM

Hi,

EPGP Interview experience
Location: Mumbai (Dadar)
Date: 8-Jun-2009
Time: 2-6pm slot
Total candidates in the slot: 8. We had a good time talking in the lobby I guess. I was the last to get interviewed.

There were 2 panelists - old guy (OG) and young guy (YG) and ME

In short, interview questions were asked related to current economic scenario. The panel started with taking a look at the certificates and all that lead to the questions. So here goes my IIM Indore interview

1. OG - Some one had to be the last you were the one.
ME - That is OK. No problem (smilesss)
2. OG - Let me guess, your mother tongue is Kannada
ME - No Tamil
OG - Ohh I failed
3. OG - So where are you from in Tamil Nadu?
ME - Chennai
4. OG - Proper Chennai or some town nearby?
ME - I don't exactly know because I have been born and brought up here in Mumbai and have never been to Chennai.
OG - You should go once when you have time.
5. OG - Can you tell me something about Tamil literature?
ME - No idea because I have been in Mumbai since birth. Only studied tamil in school till 4th std.
6. OG - Have you heard of "xyz"?
ME - No idea
7. OG - Have you heard of "sangam"
ME - Yes. We used to have Tamil sangam competetions in school.
8. What is Tamil sangam, what is its contribution to Tamil language and when did it prosper most?
ME - No idea but if I were to guess I would say it prospered in 1980s-90s
9. OG - You missed it just by 2000 years.
ME - achha hua main pehle hi clearly bol diya ki main Chennai ke baare mein kuch bhi nahi jaanta hoon

[Then they both started going through my profile as in the application material]
10. OG (Flips through my marksheets) - 2nd class in engineering except for the final year. I think you study only when needed.
ME - kind of
10. How is this Jondhale college where u studied compared to say Sardar Patel/IIT Mumbai/VJTI?
ME - may be around 20th ranked in Mumbai.
11. OG - What is Economic Union?
ME - No idea but my logical thinking says that it is the trade policies between two countries/groups.
12. OG - Can you give me a more focused answer?
ME - No idea.

13. YG - Why did you leave your last job in US and come back to India?
ME - BLAH!! BLAH!!
14. YG - What is corporate governance?
ME - High level policies and ensuring they are followed.
15. YG - Example of corporate governance failure?
ME - Satyam
16. YG - What happened in Satyam?
ME - BLAH!! BLAH!!
17. YG - Who is responsible?
ME - Board of directors of the company.
18. YG (poker faced) - Example of corporate governance in international market?
ME - Lehman Brothers
19. YG - Are there any set guidelines/standards to be followed in corporate governance?
ME - No idea.
20. YG - Will the governance needed be different in IT and other sectors?
ME - The guidelines will be the same.
21. YG - What is six sigma? Name a company with Six sigma in India
ME - Infosys.
22. YG - Tell me about the hardware and software industry in India
ME - Hardware is still nascent in India and sofware is much established
23. YG - Why is it so?
ME - Because of the initial investment and expertise needed in that field
24. YG - Name some hardware companies in India
ME - Dell, HP, IBM
25. YG - Name some Indian hardware manufacturing companies
ME - No idea
26. YG - Name some microchip making companies
ME - QualComm, Intel

27. OG - Have you heard about Strait of Gibralter?
ME - Yes.
28. OG - Where is it?
ME - No idea. My guess is it is somewhere between middle-east and Europe.
29. OG - Had you not uttered that!! (Don't know what this meant but I was scared)
ME - blank face...no idea what is going on...
30. What is international date line?
ME - told him
31. What is GMT?
ME - told him
32. What are their positions with respect to each other?
ME - told him
33. What are the relations between US and Cuba?
ME - No trade between them...blah blah...
34. Why is that?
ME - Not sure but I think it has to do with some civil war started in Cuba some years ago.

OG and YG - OK that would be all. Thank you.
ME - Thank you!

Cheers and all the best to everyone for tomorrow.

Regards,
-Sesha

Re: IIM Indore EXPGP Interview and Beyond - 09-06-2009, 07:43 PM

Hello all,

I got done my interview yesterday (8th June) at Mumbai 9 AM to 1 PM Session at Dadar.

Out of 15 invited people about 10-11 attended it.

All people were asked about very general question related to field they were coming from.

They invited people in random order, instead of initially declared call list. It appeared they went in order of work experience.

Youngest guy was 28 years old IT fellow.

Everyone was comfortable with the questions, so it makes more puzzled about the outcome.

If people post here the number of interivew attendies at each location, this would give good guess about demand and supply.

Interview duration stared with 30 mins for first candidate, lowest was 15 mins for IT guy from Pune (Wipro).

all the best,

Raj

Did other's join later?

By the way if all of us mention the number of people in their session then we can find out the interview count.

Other questions that I now remember:
OG - What is India's GDP growth rate?
ME - currently between 5-6%
OG - Why is that?
ME - Mainly because of recession.
OG - But the market has touched 15k. How is that?
ME - That happened only recently because of the stable new govt.
OG - Does export lead to growth?
ME - Yes. Definitely.
OG - Does import lead to growth?
ME - Depends on what is being imported. If raw material is being imported it is good but if finished goods are being imported it is very expensive.
OG - Name a country which imports raw materials and is growing.
ME - Japan. They make so many cars/automobiles but I believe they do not have that much minerals.

Hello,

I was sitting very next to you on your left.

Other people included one fellow from Tata Jamshedpur, who was talking till his turn from interview came. After his interview also he talked a lot till he left the place for Khar. (While coming the cabby gave him a good Mumbai opportunity lesson and he was finding Calcutta much more clearer and better place then Mumbai)

One person joined after initial attendence (Manish Arora), who also got interivewed on 2nd or 3rd random order.

Total may be around 10 persons.

Best regards.
Rajendra
