Hi Sougata,

That is my thought process for the MS-MBA. I plan to opt for it right now and then decide whether to continue or not after the first sem.

My extra-curriculars are decent.. not great..
I didn't understand your last line though..

Sanjay

Hi Sanjay,

I will clarify the confusion.
The first part of my post was related to MS-MBA.

The second part(related to extra-curriculars) was in response to earlier posts.

Can anyone tell me how difficult or how easy is it to get a 2.7 GPA? We need to get that in order to continue our schol.

Hey Sanjay,

I have a college senior at BU. He got 3.1 and says its more like a percentile. I dont think it shud be much of a difficulty for Indians.....Remember we shud be the best of the lot with such schol n all .....so i wud not consider it as a deterrent

Hie...

Posting after a long time....but have been following the thread...

wud like to comment on everything i remember, in some order...

About ECA being important for Boston admit/schol... I donno what went right with me...in retrospect, I think I could present a strong over-all profile...thanks to the essays of BU which give you opportunity to talk about everything you'd like to. Can't comment on how much weightage was given to ECA in particular...

About MS-MBA as well as MBA option...even I've been offered both with an addition $ 8k schol. I am not very interested in it...but since they have given us an option of taking up now and giving up later, I will opt for it. Better safe than sorry!!

Now about BU being a back-up or the front runner... for me it's the latter...I must admit that I didnt apply to too many schools and am kinda regretting a bit...had applied to just 3...have converted 2 and am to be interviewed by ISB on 3rd.

100% schol is a big bonus vis-a-vis my long term plans and it's difficult to go for a higher ranked university spending all that amount...I know it's debatable...but that's my opinion. Then, applying to other schol-friendly universities would gimme a college in same league, may be a shade better but that's it!!

I am contemplating to apply to 1-2 top notches...and then take things as they come...but lemme re-state...during the entire apping process, attending their sessions and after all the deliberation...it's too tempting an option to resist...and there's a more than strong possibility that I'll go to boston.

Now, the most important thing bothering me...They have asked for a guaranteer who can show the entire program cost. Now, after getting full schol, this was unexpected...still...how're you guys managing? Time's also running out...please share...

Moreover, how do u guys plan to bear living expenses? Am sure we all wud like to carry something like 5-10 lacs in our accounts...how're u managing?

Let's form a community of people going to BU...exchange contact details and share all the knowledge we can...wud start that shortly..

Regards,
Mayank

I agree with Maxximus that we (guys going to BU) should form something and discuss on things like financial statements, forms etc. I am stuck about the deposit and the things to send along with it before Jan 25.

Guys, share your thoughts. Are you just sending the check with the form that says choose the MS.MBA program or sending everything from Int. student form to bank statement etc.

Re: Boston University Admit, 2008-10 - 26-12-2007, 06:04 PM

Hi guys,

We need to send the letter of intent and deposit by Jan 25th.

As we have got scholarship, we do not have to show the entire amount for I-20. I had spoken to adcom and they said that I have to show around $15000 (after schol).

I don't know if they have increased the tuition. As our schol is fixed, so the difference in tuition and schol plus the first year's living expense has to be shown in the financial declaration statement.

If any of you have some more details, please share.

Thanks,
Sougata

Re: Boston University Admit, 2008-10 - 27-12-2007, 03:24 AM

Hi Guys ...

Sorry for being away for sometime ...

Some quick pointers: The MS.MBA course might be useful for someone who wants to stay abreast of technology while parallely opting for a functional specialization through an MBA ... for eg: I wish to do a Tech + Finance specialization, hence MS.MBA fits in perfectly well, giving a Tech-Functional flavour to my profile, which is precisely what I wish ...

If Management Consulting or Core Finance or Core Marketing is what you wish, I do not think an MS.MBA would be very useful. Even assuming that you are getting the MS degree for free, you are still going to invest substantial time in obtaining that degree. Why invest that time in something which is not going to have a direct influence on your career path ... Just a suggestion guys, please think over it ...

But yes, BU also says that last year's MS.MBA batch enjoyed a 100 % placement with average salary levels around 10K higher than the plain vanilla MBA programme of BU. So, thats something to think about!

There is some discussion going around ECAs. I think its just not about ECAs. Its about highlighting the Unique Selling Proposition (USP) of admitting you. With increasing number of applicants (especially, the dreaded Indian + IT + Male pool), it becomes imperative for everyone to highlight how UNIQUE they are ... Hence, to build a uniqueness around one's profile is the key ... Now this Uniqueness could be built around Academics, Co-curricular, Extra-Curricular activities, your interets, your thought process, your nationality, and a lot more ...

Hope that helps!

Again, all the best everyone, and hope to meet all you guys soon!

BU Fall 08 batch, I guess is going to be a PARTY, with so many enthusiastic people joining in!

Cheers,
Narayanan.
