Hi INSEAD Alumnus,

Thanks so much for starting this thread and helping so many aspirants, such as myself, in taking a well informed decision.

I am in a fix regarding which batch to apply for and would really appreciate if you can share your views.

Let me quickly take you through my background. I graduated with a Bachelors degree in Pharmaceutical sciences from India. I then pursued a Postgraduate degree in business management from Manchester Business School, UK, where I was a merit holder. Immediately after graduation I moved into freelance Management Consulting focussing on business development and profit drivers. In my 4 year freelance consulting career I have worked with a variety of clients including Blue Chip, SMEs and startups. I have worked across Europe and China. (You mentioned not to pursue exotic languages such as Mandarin but my exit language would be Mandarin )

I now aim to go for an MBA and move up the value chain in Consulting. For me an MBA will be an opportunity to meet some of the most successful people from across the globe, learn from the very best and eventually develop a better, sharper skill set. After MBA I would like to work with an established consulting firm and be active in Asian markets.

But my concern is if the January batch with internship option would suit my career goals better and help me switch from freelancing to a more established consulting firm. I am absolutely confident that I have everything that it takes to be a successful consultant. Just to give you an example, recently one of the top 3 consulting firms offered me an expedited Analyst's position but I had to pass on it due to certain personal reasons.

Ideally the July 2009 batch would allow me to be better prepared but am sure from your experience you must have a better perspective than me. I would therefore really appreciate if you could share your views and help me decide which batch to apply for.

Best regards,
Backbencher

Re: INSEAD Alumni - Q&A on INSEAD Experience and Admission Process - 21-12-2007, 04:44 PM

Thanks Insead alumni for starting this very informative thread.
I am planning to apply to INSEAD for the course starting Jan 2009.
My work experience is 10 years(will be 11 by Jan 2009)....I have worked in petrochemical operations for 7 years followed by a general management position(Executive assistant to the President and now the Executive director)
My GMAT score is 710....Decent acads and graduated from the Mumbai University Department of Chemical technology with First Class.
Decent extra currculars...
I would like to know what chances do I have for selection ?
I am looking forward to pursuing a career in operations management. But i am not very clear as to which companies will find my profile suitable?
Would be glad if you could shed some light on these aspects?
Did you have guys in ur class with a manufacturing background? What opportunities did they have during recruitment?
Thanks,
Geecee

Your profile especially your achievements are very interesting and impactful. However having said that I also would like to mention that at INSEAD, every single student has a very strong list of achivements. For instance, I know a person who has 27 patents filed or pending under his name. This however should not discourage you from applying to INSEAD. I believe that if you do not even try, you would not know if you would be successful. In this sense, you should definitely apply to INSEAD.

As for your workex, it is certainly on a lower side (3 years). You may want to work for 1 more year to strengthen your candidacy. Moreover the quality of workex is not related to being a techie or non-techie. As a techie, you can still have high quality workex. In terms of diversity of techie pool, I have seen a lot of techie non-Indians at INSEAD. So you can imagine that not all Techies are Indians.
Leadership is something that you can highlight in 2 ways - through the formal responsibility as a Manager or by taking initiatives in which you direct ppl to certain goal. I am sure if you cannot highlight your leadership through the formal responsibility, you can highlight it with some initiatives that you have taken.
Community service is not an essential aspect although most Indians tend to think the other way. Community service just adds another dimension into your personality and shows your achievements outside work. if you have any other things to share outside work, there would be certainly encouraged.

Cheers
Thank you for your response insead.alum

I would appreciate your response on some more questions:

- I am quite keen on joining sooner rather than later, so would you say that a year lesser work ex (than what you previously advised - 4 years) would seriously undermine my chances of being accepted into the program?
I suppose it would depend on the maturity displayed in the essays, and if I am able to highlight that I have been benefited with significantly higher exposure than my peers, would that suffice in place of an extra year?

- I have been reading up quite a bit about Insead and found out that Indians are the largest demographic on campus. Is this correct?
I found this surprising... Because most Indians (and correct me if I'm wrong again) would be from a tech background right?
Something seems wrong here, but I'm not able to put my finger on it

- Lastly, and I realize the inherent vagueness of the question... Have you come across someone with a similar profile to mine at Insead?
The reason I ask is - Since application to any top b-school is a time consuming and expensive process, I'd like to gauge my realistic chances at a few select (and elite) b-schools.
This will allow me to set my expectations in accordance with what my profile can command. So, essentially I'm looking at optimizing my applications and resources before starting my application process.

Thank you for taking the time to answer these queries.
First hand advice from puys at places like Insead is invaluable - Your help is greatly appreciated.

Regards,
Varun

p.s - 27 patents!! Wow... his (ex) employers loss and Insead's gain

Greetings,
I have been following this thread and it is indeed quite informative. I would appreciate if you could comment on my profile.
Indian/M30/Telecommunication Engineer. (Initially I was with an IT company then shifted to a product dev company in 2006 which is into Telecom switches dev.)
WE: 7.5 years (3 years in project management) I am considered as top 10% of the employees in my present org.
GMAT: 690 (Q49. 35. 4)
Acads: 5.87/10 (IIT Mumbai) (Is this a big concern for selecting candidates?)
Extra Cur: held three of the most reputed elected posts at IIT. Led innovation throughout my undergraduation years.
Extra-Professional: Involved with a political/social organization for social service since Dec. 2005.

I was thinking of applying in Round 3 for Sep 2008 Intake, but I am also considering the option for Jan 2009 Intake. Please advise on my profile and the class I should aim for.

Cordially,
Vikrant

Hi,

I have been wait-listed for the batch of Sep 2008. I have a few queries with respect to the wait-lists converting to admits.

1. How many eventual participants of the programs were wait-listed in the first place in the last batch?
2. Should we push any additional information about our profile (promotion on the job-front, achievement in EC, etc.)?

Please advise.

Regards

My Profile

I am a chartered accountant by profession. I have a GMAT score of 740/5.0 but an experience of 4.5 years as on April 09. I have been working in analytical profiles - MIS / Corporate Planning / Management reports & Analysis / etc since the start of my career. i have experience of both - division level and corporate level. Currently working closely with CFO. I have worked in two companies (both well known brands in India in steel and pharma sectors).

Accads - First class always.

Extra curriculars - Black belt shito ryu karate.
1. Highly active in Dramatics through out the school and college life.

5. Member of 3 member steering commitee of cultural commitee in college

Could you please tell whether i should apply and comment on my chances??
