Hi Randhir/Prathap
Thanx for all the earlier responses...
Got some more queries ....
1) Can you share some statistics on how approx. many students apply from India and is there any cap on the number of students selected from India??
2) My major concern is the 'Documentary evidence of financial support' that needs to be submitted for 'Visa'.
Can you guys throw some light on what is the minimum amount to be shown (I guess its related to the fees and/or living expenses) and what kind of evidence are they looking at. (Bank FD/savings bank/Mutual fund investments/Investment in shares, etc.) If you get up in the morning and go to sleep at night and in between do what you like, consider yourself a successful man

More Q's - Main concerns are opportunities outsode of finance for non-mandarin speakers and the approx. renumeration.
1) Statistics on placements broken down by country of origin for those who remained in Hong kong... Not including Finance?
2) Opportunities without Mandarin skills for non-finance positions (e.g. consulting or GM or marketing)
3) How active are the alumni in providing knowledge of opportunities to current students?
4) Do you have any idea about competitiveness of HKUST in its placements within Hong Kong vs Top US B-School? (e.g. do the 'best' jobs generally go to the US b-school graduate)?

I currently have 2+ yrs of work-ex in IT. Am loking at making a career in Finance . What is the average salary, an Indian can expect with this profile. I kow a lot depends on the MBA as well as student. But a rough idea would help. Also, if after 3-5 yrs of working in Hongkong, how are the chances of coming back to India and getting decent pay and work?

Kunal | Kunal,
This question has been covered in previous pages. To give you the ans in short again, lots of opportunities outside of Finance (both me and Prathap are looking outside of Finance for options and majority of the Indian alumni in the recent years have got placed in Non-Finance jobs) and lots of courses outside of Finance are available too although there are some awesome ones in Finance that you'll just not want to miss even if you are not focussed on Finance.

(Bank FD/savings bank/Mutual fund investments/Investment in shares, etc.) | Unfortunately don't have the official stats. Last year, I believe it was under 1 in 5. So for the six positions that got filled, there were no more than 30 applicants. But this year, the numbers have shot up dramatically. I'll say the number from India is near 100 this time and the number of Indians selected might go up slightly (maybe 8-10) since the class strength is expected to be increased.
I think Prathap (pitbull) covered your question 2 earlier. Please go through earlier posts for the same.
Cheers,

And since I haven't been through this process, I or Prathap are not the best qualified to answer this. You might be able to look up independent sites like Vault for general information.
Chances of coming back to India once you establish yourself here are really good. Just in the last couple of months, two of our alumni found wonderful opportunities in India and went back.

Officially 2 years might be enough I think. But if you look at the average experience level of the class (4-5 years with some of them having 10+ years of rich experience), it might be good to apply once you have at least 3-4 years of work-ex to best appreciate the HKUST MBA experience. | | | | | The Following User Says Thank You to hkust2007 For This Useful Post:

cheers | Not sure if its detailed by country. But the data for non-finance by industry should be on the school's website.
The stats should ans your second question too.
Alumni are kept active with lots of alumni sharing events after which it is upto the student to engage the alumni they want to be in touch with. Of course corresponding clubs end up helping out in this too.
Not sure about this. Both have their advantages. But in terms of reputation, I'm guessing (I repeat guessing since I'm not an insider), that the TOP US B-Schools will have an advantage over HKUST with all else being equal. But then being in HK gives us an edge over all the US Competition even if they decide to come to HK. So works both ways. | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
