Hey all
I finally took the GMAT today in delhi.
I scored 39 on verbal, 50 on quant. Total score is 730.
I have an excellent academic record (topper from DCE) and have a 2 years experience with microsoft. Can someone advice on my chances of getting into one of the following top BSchools
ISB, Stanford, Stern, Harvard, Kelloggs and few other top ones.
Or is it worthwhile to retake the GMAT to reach something like 750.

I recommend you to go through the class profile of various student in such universities and learn from it. As far as i know it is in India you can get into a best B school without work ex. ; probably school abroad might as well consider you but of course not in top 50.
There are many career opportunities even with B.Com, first gather some work ex and then plan for MBA - suggestion
No hard feeling think over again about your plan of action ... All the Best If real is what you can feel, smell, taste and see, then 'real' is simply electrical signals interpreted by your brain

your score is good, probably you can apply as well, however i feel you should have more work ex.(roughly 5 years for all except ISB) Quote:

its just average work ex that ppl have
and not every1 in the class have same work ex
so if you got great profile backed up with quality work ex
and not quantity any1 can get into top b-school
its all about how you present the picture
so ppl dont worry if you have low work ex
just go for it remember one thing
If you really want something as if your life depends on it
then you will loose the fear of failure
so ask yourself how badly you wanna be in a b-school next fall
and then decide for yourself
dont let any1 decide for you what you wanna do
hope this helps all

Hi Anshul,
First thanks to u for creating this thread, i am planning to join an MBA in US in 2009 and this forum answered a lot of open questions for me !!!
Here are some more I have
I would have a work experience of 2 years by May 2009 in SAP Labs, have graduated from REC in Electronics, am still to give my GMAT, I expect a score of around 680-720 in my GMAT, considering this
1) Which universities would be a good target, I want to apply to couple of big names like HBS, Standford couple of mid-ranked and few slightly lower ranked
2) I am planning to give my GMAT in 2 week of Sept, is that too late ??? if so what is the latest I can give it by, is Aug end a good bet
Thanks | | | | | | | |

@cat crack
Tell me a little more about your work experience: leadership roles, promotions, etc. One weakness I see in your application is the length of work experience which is on the lower side. So unless your nature of work experience shows tremednous progression and you are actively involved in co curriculars, I would advise against applying to HBS and Stanford. But then again, tell me more about yr work experience and I will be able to advice you better.
Also tell me about what you want to do post MBA. You can consider these schools:
Chicago (big name, stretch)
UCLA (big name, stretch)
CMU Tepper (top 20, realistic)
UTA McCombs (top 20, realistic)
Purdue (mid ranked, safety)
Vanderbilt (mid ranked, safety)
Once you give me more info, I will shortlist schools that would better match your goals. Anshul UNC Kenan-Flagler Class of 2010

The dilemma surrounding the ideal number of years of work experience is a common one. I am a 2009 applicant myself and I have so far met and interacted with current students, alumni and admittion committee's of nearly all the schools that I will be applying to. After speaking with so many people I have realized that it is not really how many years of work experience you have; what a school is really looking for is "what" a potential candidate can contribute to the entering class - will he/she fit in with his/her classmates? If you have worked for 2 years and your experiences are vast and unique then they will admit you - im sure even Harvard.
The second question, and I have stressed this a few times on this forum, is figuring out whether it is the right time for you to do your MBA. This decision could come immediately upon graduation, 2 yrs into your career, 5-8 yrs or even 15-20! A decision like this comes with maturity, if you've got it, go ahead and apply. I can say this - the top programs in the US admit smart individuals with diverse experiences (both at work and outside).
Good Luck.

If you can answer: Why MBA?? Why now? Why this school? and What after MBA? confidently, you stand a gud chance at any school..

@ sillyfool
thanks for the comment,
I agree on, how desperate one is order to get through, which matter a lot.
I also agree with you, on how one portrays oneself to the universities, however to my knowledge its very rare that a person with two years(at the time of joining) getting an admission.
In order to get through with just two years of work ex one should have exceptional profile; for Harvard / Wharton if you show enterpreuneur background one can get through, i personally know a person with such a background at Harvard.
nothing to discourage, Ground rule is one needs give ones best shot while applying
