Why don't we meet. Or is there any other thread running on this.

Hey Folks,

I am through with my research and have enrolled with a consultant. Below are my findings :

Based in Delhi
1. Genesis, Delhi – Their response was quite assuring to me. They provide assurance of getting you placed in good schools, charging 100,000 – 200,000. They also claim to assure huge scholarships. I think that the claims are just too tall. I got feedback from other informal sources that they only make these claims after scrutinizing the profile of applicant. If the profile already appears promising, then they provide admission and school guarantee. My opinion is it’s not quite honest approach if what I heard is true. It’s like a doctor treating a healthy person and providing a wellness guarantee.
2. Princeton Review, Delhi - They seem to be the most feasible in terms of charges. They charge 32,000 for 5 applications. However when I interacted with the guys, I did not find them convincing enough to do justice to my profile. Also, when I told them that I may apply to 7-8 schools then they were far more interested in money than any other talk. I am not going to enroll with them.
3. ********, Delhi - Gosh! Sky high rates. 30-35K for 3 applications! They do not have full time essay editors. I could not speak with anyone who would be able to answer any B-school specific queries. Personally think that to answer questions like “Why MBA” and “Why this school” you actually need someone who has been through the process and knows about your profile and what schools are looking for. ******** is regarded good for GMAT prep though – I will rule out for any essay editing.

Online
1. EssayEdge.Com - Probably the best known online consultants for editing business school essays. Editors are mostly Americans and have their distinct style of writing which might not be suitable for an Indian applicant like me. As per my understanding, in the admissions committee, mostly current students evaluate the applications from their region in the first place. If any Indian would evaluate my application, he would easily figure out that essays have been written or edited by an American. . Essayedge is also very expensive for me.
2. ApexWriters.Com – These are current students and alumni. I interacted with a current student and one admission consultant. When I insisted on speaking with one of the editors, they also put me through a Sloan student. I also interacted with some past applicants, received positive feedback. Apex also offered to edit one paragraph of my essay for free and I was impressed with the critique. I am going with them.
3. Essaylabb.com – When I called these guys, I could not get convincing answers for my queries again. I could not get justification of their charges. Also, they are not the guys who have gone through it …
I have enrolled with them for one school and after evaluating the services would take a decision on other schools.
Thank you friends for all your inputs in this thread.

great review Sana !!

I have also heard quite a good reviews abt Genesis but fees is way too high. But if they could provide u with 60- 70 % scholarship then its too tempted to think abt them. And also if healthy ppl needs and gets wellness guarantee then no harm in this..

Going by this amazing review i can narrow down my search to Genesis and Apex Writers...

any idea abt whether selected candidates took any outside help for essay editing. and would it be negative if ur essays and ur interviews dont match..

I will just make one point here. Generally speaking, a desi male getting scholarships from top 10-15 schools is rare and very tough and you really need to have a solid profile to get scholarships. However, it is lot easier to get scholarships from lower ranked schools. In fact, a good GMAT score will increase your chances of getting scholarships heavily in lower ranked schools. I can understand that an admission consultant can help you prepare your applications better. But admission scholarships are given on the basis of your application, not on the basis of anything else. So, how can an admission consultant help you extra to get scholarships? (Note: I am talking of scholarships that are given during the time of admission, not post-matriculation type scholarships for which you have to apply separately after your admit)

Moreover, when getting scholarship from a school, first evaluate whether you want to go to that school first. A lot of people generally leave scholarship offers to go to better schools even without any scholarship.

Just a note though - the score is as small or as big an issue as we personally make it out to be
The GMAT score cannot be segregated from the entire application package & the AdCom looks at the application in totality - besides the score, you'll have to make everything click for you in terms of the impact that you make through your entire application package and the essays, recos, CV etc that it includes.
The point I'm trying to make is that if you are not able to convince the AdCom about the fact that you will be able to contribute substantially in class, they might just negate your application inspite of your score!

Personally, I feel you can go through with your score - but please make your choice of schools based on what your long- and short term goals are, why you want to do an MBA and what next - base your choice on where you see your career headed and how the school will thus fit into your scheme of things to come.

Yes - the score is important but hey there will always be people like me who have been able to convince the AdCom that my story is great and that the class will benefit from my participation - and all this with a resultant admit from both LBS & IMD..and taht too with a score that is nowhere near the 720+ mark...

I would also second doctor and orientalkhichdi . You have a decent GMAT friend, that hurdle is almost over now. It is the time to concentrate on your applications, and try to present yourself in as much unique manner as possible. Being an Indian, Male, IT you have to do that and do that well.

luck!

Unhappy Re: Good B schools counselling centres in Delhi - 24-08-2007, 12:31 AM

i dont know about others but pleeeez save yourself from ******** and princeton. 3 of us including myself enrolled with them and rue it till now. the service is horrible, they are very quick at charging you money but the gmat students at ******** are seen vowing never to come back to ******** for admission counselling. i highly recommend that you ask someone who is already taking gmat coaching there and you will know about inside story.
also, let me tell you... last year ******** charged 40k for 5 top end schools and as i hear earlier in this thread, they are charging 35k for 3 schools now... for the service which hasnt improved a da** sh**.

i am sorry for my rant, i cant help it. all three of us cant help it. here is more you should consider.
ask them has any one of them ever had taken gmat, let alone an MBA from ISB or US Business schools . None of them knows what they are talking about. we got real furious with their service one day and demanded our money back. that time their CEO or wotever came running and offered to take up our applications himself. hope you agree however able he may be, he cannot do justice to 3*5 = 15 school applications himself.
at the time of enrolment, they told that we would sit with the editors while preparing applications. how can one sit and entrust the career with dumb editors (girls? who are DU passouts?) who know nothing. remember that you will never get to interact with their real editors who are located in underground dungeons. not a single person (except the ceo) has visited US even once.
we went to ******** by the method of elimination. we visited princeton review which had an office close to ******** in nfc, delhi. the guy there (anurag?) was trying hard controlling his saliva from dripping when we told there are 15 applications at stake. we told him that we would get back to him in a week and later each one of us received 1 call everyday asking us to come down and register. this was enough for us to reject this center outrightly. i guess they have the brand name of princeton for sure, but certainly not the professionalism it should carry.
i am trying some of these online consultants this time. i dont wana see the faces of dumb people trying to fleece money out of me.

my suggestion to everybody... ask hard questions. stress interview them rather than just listening to their blah and they will reveal the real themselves.
