Helo Orientalkhichdi,

Would like to here some comment from you on following two points.

1. MBA from IMD would cost close to $100k. How does one arrange for such a big loan without collateral? How did you got it? ( I have saving of about $20k) I am married and have a kid too. So i am quite concerned on loan front. If Loan is not assured then i do not even feel its worth trying on IMD.

2. Please follow my brief profile below and pour in you own opinion about my standing against elite IMD aspirants.

B.E Mechanical Engg - NIT Jamshedpur (75%)
M.Tech IIT Chennai (Construction Management) ( CGPA7.5)

Working for L&T ECC since last 6 years. Fast track progression from Engineer to Sr. Engineer, Asst Manager and now Manager in just 5.5 years.

Working in Malaysia since last 18 months.
GMAT 670.

Extra curricular - Average
Community Service - Not so good since I started working. though once in a year i participate in arranging blood donation camp, Plantation etc. During my school days I used to do some work like providing free tution to junior classes.

KKJ,
The opportunity @ IMD is above money. There are assistances in the form of loans, scholarships etc. Suffice to say that its much difficult to get into IMD that it is to raise money for it. ATB

Dear KK Jha,

Would like to here some comment from you on following two points.

1. MBA from IMD would cost close to $100k. How does one arrange for such a big loan without collateral? How did you got it? ( I have saving of about $20k) I am married and have a kid too. So i am quite concerned on loan front. If Loan is not assured then i do not even feel its worth trying on IMD.

The overall expenses of IMD along with family are around USD 100K.The student Loan at IMD is offered to 90% of the students so its practically confirmed and it covers around USD 45000. I have availed of this loan. I have also taken another USD 25000 education loan from IDBI Bank- this is without collateral. The balance USD 30000 is coming from savings – you already have 20K.. so another 10 K wouldn’t be a problem J

GMAT 670.

Profile seems a fit for IMD. They like people from the Engg background and specifically people who have large brand name companies on their CVs. L&T will give you that advantage, also international experience is a big plus. You will need to really highlight that. Your career growth would also be a big positive, since IMD is looking for leaders – so ppl who have grown in their careers on a fast pace is what IMD is looking for. The GMAT score is on the lower side.. but if I could make it at my score I am sure you will be able to if you have a compelling story..

Extra curricular - Average
Community Service - Not so good since I started working. though once in a year i participate in arranging blood donation camp, Plantation etc. During my school days I used to do some work like providing free tution to junior classes

Seems ok.. don’t worry.. Extra currics & community service is not what gets you into an MBA college.. It might just add a few points to your application.. These two things become very important – if you have done something fairly big in this domain.. else its not the deciding factor..

Re: IMD, Lausanne admit taking questions - 15-08-2007, 08:29 PM

Dear Ajay,

see you are a little young for school.. But it all depends when do you feel right.. if you feel you want to go now.. Now is the time..

See without work exp the only schools in the top few which might be open to looking at your application favourably would be Columbia & Chicago.. for that you would need a score of above 750 and a compelling story - why you feel you have all the leadership ingrdients at 21 itself.. but it is possible..

but it is very important you score well on the GMAT.. since for younger applicants that becomes the differentiator..

also if you want to apply to schools between 20 - 40 globally - a great score will negate the no work exp piece.. so you just need to decide whether you think you want to be in a top class 5 yrs hence or a good school now.. and as mentioned above some top US schools are open to freshers with a great story..

All the best..

Rgds,
OK

hi orientalkhichdi...first of all, thnx a ton for ur valuable info...i was desperate to gain such an informative suggestion frm some seniors....now, see, considering that i am a fresher, i doubt there will be a lot of companies in the US who wud consider taking the risk of employing an MBA grad with no work ex and immediately putting him into the boardroom...so, realistically, i m seeing my chances at entrepreneurship so that atleast i can translate my ideas into effective solutions if i dont manage to get into a firm within my desired sector....now the primary reason why i want an mba at such an early stage is either doing a job or setting my start-up...in any case, i wud rather want to do a second MBA in Consulting later on cuz i wud like to move on in that direction...and i believe u need a fair amount of industrial knowledge to be able to advice the industry...so far, i have shortlisted on the foll univs:
1. MIT, Sloan
2. Kelley
3. GSB (ur suggestion)
4. Columbia
5. ???? (i was thinkin of CMU but a student ther told me there were no freshers in his batch)

cud u suggest the fifth one??
thnx in advance

I am indeed pleased to hear a feedback from you. You are already a brand ambassador of IMD. How is the placement there? Do one gets an easy work permit to work in Europe post one's MBA?
