Great for a lot of people .... I think this is just the tip of the iceberg, I guess pretty much stems out from Billl Gates' outcry to do away with Visa Quotas...

Many companies should follow the same suit....

very well written and this is pretty much what I have been trying to tell most US applicants from India...living this side of the world we are aware of the facts but a lot is unknown in India simply bcos of the assumption in the last couple of years that people getting IT + Engg jobs on H1 = MBA students getting jobs on H1

I was somewhat surprised at reading Simba's blog and her suggestion of avoiding US-B schools this year!!!

Fortunatetly for me this year I got my US visa (Columbia B-school) as well as Canadian Visa for Rotman. CBS without $ and Rotman with $$$ and I had to make a decision about which one to choose. I have zeroed on CBS. I contacted many of my seniors/friend at CBS/US/India and I heard none of suggesting me to drop out of to choose ROtman with $$$ and MSU with even bigger $$$$$ in the current scenario. Moreover, I also believe that MBA is a one time life-long investment. Top 10 US b-school has a global brand name and I don't think after passing out from there I would really find it difficult to get a job in Toronto/London/Singapore/Hong Kong/Japan/...... (If I prepare myself well) if not in United States. Moreover, after couple of years when US immigration improves, one can always go back there if he is so inclined.. I agree with Simba's observation that you have a huge debt when you graduate from there. Yes !! Agreed. But treat the loan as your housing loan with 20 year tenure. I believe I am capable of repaying it even in my current Salary at India. I think I won't get worse after graduating from CBS. I know situation is not as rossy as it were before and there is a risk involved but then we are all going to study business and I guess RISK is an integral part of all business. So if we have aspire to study business we can't avoid to risk (No choice here I guess).. Just getting little philospical!!!

My take will be Just go for the best irrespective of the current situation. Two YEARS is a long long time for any change. Look for the best college you have got into and study there.

Re: US Visa Cap...Companies in US wont hire international - 11-07-2007, 11:49 AM

Why are you guys unduly concerned about the H1-B visa ? I dont think the situation will improve next year. Infact , the situation might become worse as the number of applicants will definitely increase while there will not be a proportionate increase in the H1-B
quota.

So, what is the solution ? This situation reuires us to think in a different perspective.
In my opinion , the easiest solution to the visa issue is "LOVE".
Fall in love with a US citizen while you are pursuing your MBA and get married by the time you come out of B-school.

Previously, the major goal of an MBA student is to get the "best placement" . So, it made sense in the past to work like a donkey all day and night for 2 years and thereby increase your chances to get the "best placement". But , the situation has changed now. The major goal of an MBA student is to get the "Visa".

An MBA student should be able to adapt himself to the various soical, political and economic changes in the society. So, all you smart MBA folks....dont be foolish in working like a donkey all day and night in your b-school. Start dating. Start flirting. And, make sure that you fall in love and get married to a US citizen by the end of your b-school life. Once you get married , you will get a "conditional green card" status and by the time you celebrate your 2nd wedding anniversary , you will get the "permanent green card".Given the current scenario , being in "conditional green card" status for 2 years is far better than being in "optional practical training(OPT)" status and getting kicked out of US after one year of your graduation. Once you get the permanent green card , it is upto you to continue the marriage or give a divorce. Divorce is no big deal...it is as common as marriage in US.

For all the future MBA's , who are planning to apply to US schools next year - dont research the schools on the basis of stupid parameters such as "average annual salary", "average time to repay your loans & debts" ,etc. Remember, the economy has changed and your goal is "Visa" , not "Placement". So, your top priority in selecting a b-school should be "Number of US citizens in the b-school who are still Single" . The greater the number , the more likely you will acheive your goal. Guys...you are already at a severe disadvantage because the proportion of girls is always low in b-schools , so proportion of single girls will be still lower. And , gals...you are lucky, as always.. because the proportion of single guys will be very high.

For all those unfortunate guys who are unable to marry a girl by the end of 2 years , dont lose heart. There is another way out. Go and find a beautiful mexican girl who is working in the lawns of the rich american families. Those girls are looking for guys just like you (who are ready to earn loads and loads of money but need a visa to do so....).
Those girls will definitely prefer marrying you and enjoying your money rathen than working in those lawns. Hence , this is a good business deal (the only "bottleneck" is you have to make sure that the mexican girl is not an illegal immigrant..)

For all the people who already got married and those who got married just recently , I am really sorry for you. You people should have thought twice before taking such a hasty decision to get married when the B-school scenario is in such a social and political crisis.

In the worst-case scenario , when everything fails...just file for bankruptcy after you graduate. Then , put on a patriotic face and return to India. Convince yourself that you are going to do very well in India as India is one of the fastest growing economies in the world. Get your marriage "arranged" with some random girl and live happily ever after...

Disclaimer : Please take the above post in lighter vein. No disrespect meant to any community. I was watching Russel Peters stand-up comedy "outsourced" where he makes a mockery of Americans, chinese,Indians and Mexicans. So, i got inspired by it when I read this thread. As you might have already guessed , I am as frustrated with this whole H-1 fiasco as you are.

My opinions about the H1 Visa issues are pretty much the same. I look at the 2 yr MBA as an opportunity to improve my professional/business skills. Do not look at a Bschool as a place where u get a job - they are not employment exchanges. Of course, one needs to think abt job prospects, considering the fact that we have a huge loan to handle. But US is not the only place in the world where you can work. And an MBA from a good school will help you get a job anywhere in the world, provided you throw in the necessary time and effort.

To add to what Rinku and Iday have said, even after we consider all the H1B hassles that are unfortunately happening, the biggest question any current top b-school admit has to answer is: "Can he really decline admission offer from a top b-school?". To me and I am sure to all of us, declining the admission offer is a far bigger risk at present than to join the school in spite of H1B hassles. Because we may end up regretting for a long time with skeptic self-directed questions such as 'how would our lives have changed if we had joined our respective schools?'. Getting in next time or after a couple of years is going to be tougher and there is no guarantee. So, let's jump into the river and see what happens. I will most likely become a Pagal anyway if I do not jump.

However, I understand that the situation for future applicants is a lot different.
