Been reading some of the posts here. A similar discussion rages on the Business Week BW-Forums for MBAs, and I posted the below a few days ago out there.... The advice below was directed at people who will graduate MBAs in the US in 2007, 2008, or entering school this year to graduate in 2009. However, the advice on the languages and other up-skilling + the HSMP program would apply to most....
QUOTE-- 1. Learn a major European / Asian language - preferably German, French or Spanish or Chinese, Thai, Malay or Indonesian. If it requires additional registration and a little more cash - spend it!! You need to be good enough to write a business memo in that language. Spanish will likely open doors in Latin America. With not many exceptions, companies will require you to speak the local language with business if not native fluency (that too if they're less worried about your nationality or work authorization). 2. Start networking furiously with Alumni from your school who are in Europe or Asia. If you have zeroed in on an industry or set of industries already in anticipation of a future MBA career in those, start researching those industries' / companies' positions in Europe / Asia / Lat Am. Avoid marketing / brand positions in FMCG companies as these will always go only to locals, ethnics or completely native fluent foreigners. Look carefully at the major hi-tech/operational consulting firms, healthcare (pharma, biotech, medical devices), precision engineering etc. Of course, don't forget the Banks (predominantly in London) and the Strategy Consultants (which might occasionally hire an outsider in a particular country's office). Academically - try to take industry relevant courses, like Finance and Healthcare. 3. Try securing at least one internship offer from outside the US. 4. Save your money where possible. Keep away some cash to make at least two major overseas treks as part of the job-search, and at least two more trips for interviews. 5. Apply for an HSMP visa to the UK immediately on graduation. Do so EVEN if you have accepted an offer for a US based job for which your employer has committed to file your H1 petition. I personally doubt if even 115,000 visas will be enough. If companies so desparately want H1 Visas, it'll take less than 2 days for the quota to fill-up. If you're in one of the US Top 20, very likely this school will be on the UK Gov's list of B-Schools whose MBA graduates qualify for an HSMP, therefore the hurdle-free right to work in the UK for at least a year; easily extendable. 6. Even if the situation in the US improves - please DON'T disregard what's said above. These are skills that will help you immensely. Disclaimer - went to a Top EU school, now working in the EU. good points Baccardi - I tell the students in my school about the HSMP all the time as well.
Also, to follow up on what you said - networking is a big outside India..so let everyone know that you are doing an MBA. You will be amazed to see how they will be willing to help you (unless of course u have some jealous friends who never want to help u!) connect to other people. Among the offers I had for internships, a couple of them were through these means.
Finally, if someone is working in Canada or UK, if you still want to work in the US for an internship, apply on a J1 visa. There are plenty of non-profit J1 sponsors in the US (they act like middlemen) who will help facilitate your visa. The only clause attached to this visa is that post internship, you can't work in the US for 2 years. I had an internship offer in the US but I didn't take it up for these reasons. | | | | | | | |
