I have been out of touch for a while, but have there been any updates on the visa scenario since? I shall update as and when I get something from here on.

Well the job market is bad anyway.

Lots of jobs in core sectors sectors like Oil and Gas ( no points for guessing why) and biotech.

Finance sector has been losing jobs so has the IT sector.

OPT extension so far hasnt worked for anybody I know. Reading between the lines of the extenstion I found that the employer has to have the E-verify thingy. Only one state has implemented it obligatorily and it has been a disaster. So again OPT extension is pretty useless.

I wish that the brain trust in Washington would just read an economics text book. Immigrants "taking" jobs away from americans. Gimme a break there are as many jobs as there are people in an economy.

Man i really regret coming here.

Sgmat:

Do you plan to come to the US for MBA or MS (Comp sci/engineering). If it is the latter, it is a no brainer, and with the new 29 month OPT extension rule, you should be fine (this extension doesn't work for MBA).

However, if you plan to come to the US for MBA, it is a little more dicy. My only recommendation is to apply to the top 10-15 MBA schools in the US, as well as Rotman/Ivey in Canada (the immigration process in Canada is more friendly than the US).

Even if you get into a top 10-15 MBA school in the US, you will have to fall into a H1 lottery (as per the current situation).

As for the MBA job market in the US, it is tough right now, but the prediction is that the economy should pick up in a year or two (of course, this is just a prediction), assuming everything remains constant.

Good luck

RJG.

Hi sgmat,

Agree with RJG.

If you plan to do your MBA and stay in US to work, you should only target the top business schools.

Good luck.

Kind regards,
Thomas

guys,

IMO, the visa lottery is here to stay. Now anything may happen after the elections but since immigration is such a hot potato, we must err on the side of caution. So chances of gaining employment in US will depend on how lucky one is. That said, MBA from top schools can also open doors in other countries as well.

Guys.. I had initially planned for an MBA in India. But I'm most likely to do my Grad studies in Economics in US. Fall 2009. I might finish the course in jan 2011.. Will I be eligible for OPT extension?
