Re: US Visa Cap...Companies in US wont hire international - 24-02-2008, 12:53 AM

Sighh.....!!!!!!!!!

I wish it were that simple.. just increase the visa cap and everybody will be happy and prosperous in America...

The problem isnt the H-1b cap.. they are plenty of ways to get around it (eg Take a small job at a university which are h-1 cap exempt and then TRANSFER to a company ie no caps for h-1 transfers) OR get a PHD from a kick ass university in your relevant area ( PHD in Business administration) and look for a proper tenure as a professor as B-school professors get paid A LOT. Same can be said for engineering profs...

The larger problem for my seniors who had plenty of h-1s available when they graduated is Green Cards.. The back log/waiting times for GC is a staggering 7 years if you are from India or China. That means you'll be spending the best part of your youth slogging away in a country that doesnt recognise you as a citizen ( or a human being )... in a job that is still entry level..(most management jobs require a GC) and if you get laid off or your company folds up... game over head back to india.

Guys honestly this country has given me a lot.. (most of my tuition comes from grants and scholarships).. but to do it all over again I would have never come here... I would rather have done a BA in arts from Delhi U and enjoyed and partied hard whatever...

Can some one shed a light on what the present situation is.. as relating to going to a green cards from H-1b. I am not on an H-1b so I can only tell you what I have heard from seniors.... maybe puhrince or someone can shed a light on this..

Personally the only reason I am still looking for a job is that I simply need work experience from SOMEWHERE.. once that is done I really want to get an MBA from an Indian school ( ie ISB or other schools that look at GMATS+ work ex) as I really dont have in me to slog over the CAT after 4 gruelling years here..

And can some one please sticky this thread so as international students know what they are getting into when they apply to the US

This should give you a better picture.

http://www.uscis.gov/portal/site/uscis/menuitem.5af9bb95919f35e66f614176543f6d1a/?vgnextoid=138b6138f898d010VgnVCM10000048f3d6a1RCR D&vgnextchannel=91919c7755cb9010VgnVCM10000045f3d6 a1RCRD

I am still optimistic. So far from the current students and the almuni from Hult, I had been hearing encouraging feedback on the job front. Market is bad, H1B is tough but so far none of them (atleast Indians) seem to have accepted defeat and head back to India. Another 40 days to go after that we will have a better picture.

It may not be the school doing the trick but various other factors like past experience, network, region from where you graduate and most importantly how early you graduate before March 31st.

Hi Guys, I think an Obama victory, and its is looking increasingly likely, will be good for MBA students.

Most of the criticism of the H1 stems from abuse by some companies, not MBA students. Infact one of the purposes of the H1 is to attract and retain postgraduates and other highly skilled groups.

So if the new administration takes steps to stop the abuse its more likely there will be more opportunities for Indian and other MBA students. The only question is what measures and how long it will take to get implemented.

There has been some coverage of some Patni employees in US suing Patni for abusing the H1 visa and underpaying and exploiting their workforce. There is definitely going to be some measures introduced to curb abuse of the process and that will be good for IT engineers headed to US and MBA students.

Here is a little list I made.. considering the problems internationals generally face.... this would be my preference for a foreign mba ( forget about FT and BW rankings)

1) LBS London Busniness School: United Kingdom
Pros- a) Top finance school
b) London emerging as the new financial capital of the world and leaving NYC far behind
c) Automatic entry to the HSMP which is as good as getting a green card in the US

Cons:- a) London is also emerging as the worlds most expensive city so that hefty pay package doesnt mean much

2) Rotman - University of Toronto: Canada

Pros:- a) Again a top finance school
b) Better living standards in toronto compared to any US city
c) Easy immigration system in Canada.. no seriously you can bring your entire khandaan there in a few years if you wish.
d) Free healthcare courtesy canadian government

Cons: None: if you really wanna gripe then I guess the relatively small size of the economy. Canada is not the kind of country where you'll be able to job hop every second year

3) Richard Ivey -Canada
Another good canadian school. One yr program less opportunity costs.Case method. Same as above.

3) Harvard/Wharton/Stanford: United States ( or any top 5 US school)

Pros-Brand name thats all... if you have money go for it.. again automatic entry into HSMP so if really want that foreign paycheck then you are safe... also I dont think your career prospects are going to DECREASE if you go there and come back to India

Cons:- Low ROI initially because of the US immigration system

4) McCombs USC: United States
Pros:
a)Best for IT - since most of our beloved engineers are in IT its a good program just for that
b)Decent schols+ Low tuition : so you may NOT have to take a loan which is good
Cons: a)really no reason to go if you are not an IT guy
b)really not a good school if you really want to settle abroad

5)Oxford: Said school of business
Pros: Same as no 1 + lots of scholarships
Cons: new school so alumni network not that great

6) ISB/IIM pgpx INDIA
There are enough threads here in this forum about them here.. also I think they are comparable to any international school.

7) INSEAD/IMD: Europe
Pros: 1)Global recognition- best in europe
2) HSMP
Cons: hard times for non-eu citizens at recruiting season

Judge: University of Cambridge: UK
Pros: Good for general management and telecom
Cons: If you into finance then look at no.1

9)Queens: Canada
Pros: Good for life sciences and engineering backgrounds
Cons: One year program and relatively slow recruiting. international students might find it difficult getting a job.

10) Sculich: York: Canada
Pros:Great marketing school
Cons: lots of internationals who cant speak fluent english let alone get into marketing. might lower your chances as well. If you willing to work hard and make an impression during an interview and it might be well worth it.

This list took a long while to make so questions and comments welcome

Nice list, What i dont understand is why is McCombs up there - sure its a good school for IT Mgmt but so is tepper and MIT Sloan . As for job opportunities I guess it is still the same as the rest of the top 10-20 schools.

McCombs-lower tuition thats all plus I know lots of guys with no work ex who got great schols based on gmat and grades. so its a better school if you wanna come back to india

I would put MIT sloan in the top 5. I mean they keep playing musical chairs with the top ten every year so its really no point ranking them.. so i put them all together a 4)

BTW where are you going/gone

Well yes MIT can be considered a top 5 school , as for the HSMP - this has been removed by UK for all indians starting april 2008 so that is one pro you can remove from all the schools.

As for me , I will be heading home in June end. ( based on first determining which school I am gonna join ).
