After your MBA, if you want to work in the US only, then apply to a top ten US school. Even then, your chances aren't as good as they were for students a couple of years back. But perhaps your top ranked school will be able to squeeze out a working visa for you.
If you don't mind working outside the US post your MBA, then US schools are good. And again, to note here, the higher ranked the school, the better your reputation outside the US. So, again, if you want to play safe, apply to the top 10 US schools.
In short for you, if you want a US MBA so badly AND have a good chance of a job later, APPLY TO THE TOP 10 US SCHOOLS ONLY | That is some frank advice.
Tell me, if I intend to get back to india with a US degree, then what are the schools I should apply to ?
I mean there is no point in getting into a top school with no schol and getting back to india right ?
It will take forever to repay the loan
Thanks in advance

infact, once u've done ur MBA in the US, and get placed in companies that have branches in Asia, most people still prefer their starting locations somewhere in US, thats because the starting pay in US is more than the starting pay in Asia, because of the standard of living.
so in cases like these, u wont have an option but to move to Asian countries, due to VISA problems

Much is said and talked about top 10 schools. How do we define top 10 schools?
How accurate and realistic are BW and FT rankings? Are they more credible just because of their global presence..
Does the ranking hold good for every one from all walks of life. Like some one who wants to move into Inv. Banking, shouldn't he rank schools based on this industry alone..??
I would like to hear more on this.
I haven't looked at US schools all this while but had started doing it for a month or so..and I have above questions in my mind...
Thank you | | | | | | | |

If you are looking at US schools, compare the BW and US News rankings (USN is only for US schools) - you will find consistency among them as compared to FT where Kellogg, Duke, Darden, Carnegie, Ross have been ranked way low (and is completely wrong IMO)..so I would say refer to the above two ranking systems. BW also has a non-US schools ranking as well - refer to that if looking at outside US.
plus you need to research more on which school is good in what field...Chicago, Wharton, NYU are top finance schools whereas Harvard, Kellogg, Ross are strong general management schools..you will also find top 3 schools in each category in USN rankins, as well as top 10 in each in FT..you won't find IB rankings as such but Finance yes. As a student currently doing my bachelors in engineering from the US ( got a pretty hefty schol from a top 50 school) I would encourage students TO AVOID THE US LIKE THE PLAGUE.
I have worked on two internships here, while the quality of life and all is pretty great, no decent company is willing to sponsor me or any other international student. Even the places I interned at arent open to the idea of a legal hassle that is the H-1b program. The only people open to the idea are middle men in the IT sector (read: Wipro TCS Infy) or worse middle men in the engineering sector. Big pharma, oil and food companies have simply stopped doing it.
The only bright spots are consulting firms like deloitte and bearing point. But the cap expiring in one day in April, and graduation ceremonies taking place in June even they cant do anything even if they want to. One senior I know had to give away his signing bonus from deloitte ( about $10000 which is pretty big for a guy with a bachelors).
A lot of students got absorbed in the masters and PHD programs in my university ( with full funding due to our unfortunate situation) others took small jobs in Universities ( H-1 cap exempt) with the help of their professors. So there is hope for people in science and engineering. I seriously dont know what mbas did after graduation.
I am planning on either getting a university job as an assistant researcher ( chemical engineer with loads of lab research experience in the industry) or moving to India to start my career all over again.
My advice to international students, stick to India... it helps keep things in perspective in the short and long term. Few months ago I was being paid $850/ week for an internship which is more than my father made even at the peak of his career. Now I am just packing my bags selling of all the furniture in my appartment and finishing up last few credits for graduation.
Its not that people who have gone to other countries have it easy. But there the problem seems to be more a lack of jobs immediately after graduations. The idea of not being able to hunt for jobs you want because of visa isssues is something completely unique to the US.

I guess that things are really turning out to be ugly for International students in the US ! At this point of time all I can think is that each and everyone of us should take an informed decision, Education Wise I believe US is still the best but dont pin ur hopes on landing a job there post ur MBA
