As I am from a non-traditional background (non-traditional meaning in all my studies before I have never formally studied accounting and finance) I am not only required to take part in an Analytics course that starts in August- I am also required to take up additional coursework in Finance and Accounting and a hard copy of the official transcript indicating a "B" or better must be sent, by August 1 to HBS and this had me troubled for some time.
As per HBS, the aim of the Analytics Program is to give the students some initial experience in utilizing the tools and concepts in the context of the cases and other materials they will encounter in the first year of the MBA program.
I was as expected slightly let down- I thought- Oh so they have selected me, but I must have scraped through because I have to do all these special courses to sit alongside some hot shot from Goldman Sachs (SG, that one was on your expense!) who can look at a balance sheet and scare it to give away all the PE ratios
But then a senior told me that of the 900 incoming students 200 were asked to take these courses and it is an excellent time to form life lasting bonds before they break you up in sections!
Lessons for future HBS students!
>If you have time do a one-year correspondence/online course that schools you in these areas. The Indian options will save you a lot of money!
Though a lot of options were being thrown around- I selected BYU online course (byu.edu) that was not only low-cost and allowed me to work on my own time, but unlike other courses did not require a high bandwidth internet connection at all times (I am at times required to travel at short notice).
Lessons for future HBS students!
>Research your options well; you can conserve a lot of money and headache if you ask the right questions!
Peace!
