The success of iPod the device and the success of iTunes the music download center are two different things, and i dont think their success levels are the same. As you say, iPod is more of a fashion statement - but that's only after iPod was established as a very good music player. The fashion statementedge helps iPods to win in the race against relatively cheaper alternatives from many others (iRiver, Archos, Creative, and recently MS to name a few competitors in the market)
edit: I said Sony is a cheaper alternative. what was i thinking
The selling point behind iTunes is, in my opinion, it made legal music affordable. A music download is just $0.99, which is way less than the price people used to pay for legal music. Still, as you said in the DVD rental message, nothing gets cheaper than free! So there are still lots of ppl who download free illegal music content from the net (in various other formats) and use the same iTunes software to load them into their iPods. This is why the success of iTunes is not on the same lines as that of the iPod. If all music that went into all iPods were purchased through iTunes, Apple's iTunes revenue shud have really exploded

Yeah - that is true, because of itunes downloads are still charged
To try answer the fundamental question. I think i mentioned it above already - the catch phrases for iTunes (or iPod stores as u call it) are legal and affordable. To push subodh's idea into a project - make porn legal and affordable. I know porn is legal in some countries of the world - but porn has an international market (in the truest sense) and it is not legal everywhere. So that's probably a matter of concern, but if adult content is made affordable and legally accessible, just like downloading "Hips dont lie" from the iTune store - even these countries make a solid market to tap into. You are basically doing what exactly apple did to audio (and now video) to adult content - drive the segment that sweeps p2p network after p2p network to get illegal and mostly sub-standard stuff towards ur legal and top quality content, for a minimal fee.
I dont know how much apple charges per video download - but going by the amount they charge per audio clip, it shud be affordable. And it is legal - which is basically peace of mind. So in my opinion, that's the USP.
Open to discussion/contention as always
