The question you have raised is actually wide enough in scope for a Case Study.

Just like a user can always procure an Illegal Copy of Windows for a measly $4 or for free on P2P, but still most of them decides to procure an original copy, iPod users prefer the legal channel.

A few of the Advantages of Legal Downloading that comes to mind are:

1. Very Good Download Speed
2. Prompt Help and Customer Support
3. No fear of Spyware, Adware and Viruses infecting your computer
4. Ease of Searching, Locating and the subsequent Time Saved
5. Banning of Illegal P2Ps on some College, and Companies Firewalls

Which of the channel a user actually chooses depends on the amount of spare time he has and his personal time value of money or money value of time.

If you decide to go for further education, isnt cost the trivial thing. Will you choose an REC over an IIT just because IITs fee is double that of an REC.

Anyways, what probably cryo meant was Once u get in a top B-School, you can get ample opportunities to raise the money.. Need not worry about tht.

Kahan jee rahe ho dost ? still most of them decides to procure an original copy ... Sadly people dont ... and they will continue to do so if the price difference is high ... remember those days when audio cds used to cost 300 bucks? ppl used to nicely get a pirayed one for 20/30 ...it was then when the music industry began selling them for 99.

And regarding customer support, malware ...balah blah ... people dont care a damn as long as that "measly 4$" tag is there

i'd like to say that ur accomplishments are exceptional dude, i read every post in the thread and i must say that ur biggest accomplishment is that even after getting so many highs u still take time out for answering all the question for us,

(on second thoughts mabbe this comes after the one of makin it in HBS )

None taken- but you would be surprised if I told you how much I am spending out of my own pocket at HBS... let me give you a hint- it is less than what I would have spent if I had taken the IIMA-PGPX offer (and no I am talking about last year fees not this year)

Let me put it again- the toughest part about a top B-school is getting in- not how you go about paying for it- top B schools have very generous fellowship and scholarship programs- making your cost of education almost NIL if you do not have the immediate means to pay for it.

And I was hoping someone could explain it to me... Subodh/Sunmay... guys both of you have valid points- and though I can explain MS success. I believe iPod cannot be equated with MS... is'nt iPod more of a fashion statement? Can it's success be equated to it's fashion value?

I remember reading somewhere that a very large percentage of music/video on iPod does not come from the iTunes store- how true is that? ... and the fundamental question remains unanswered- what hypes up the iPod store and how can we leverage that to push Subodh's idea into a formative zone?

And to answer your question- workex is not compulsary at HBS! Nil-workex adds to the diversity equation

Well, just to clear a few mis-conceptions, by Customer-Support, Malware etc. I did not mean general jargon. You have generalized on the basis of your personal experience.. Some people do care..

Suppose for example, I have to download some ABC.mp3. Using P2P or bittorrents, after devoting some effort in search, I might download some zip file and then find that it contains an .exe virus.

In the same way, I might find that it is a 32 kbps poor quality file and I have to research and re-download the high quality one.

On an iTunes platform I can be assured of uniformity in standards..

And primary source of earnings of iTunes (as well as other legal downloads) is not India but US. In India, people are still not comfortable with the idea of paying for something that is available for free. It stems from their tendency to try hard to bargain at 10 places for pennies and then make a purchasing decision. Indians think thrice before spending even 2-3 dollars on Net and they also feel awkward revealing their credit card numbers on the Net.
