After going thru this thread, one thing is gonna be clear to me that all of us approach with different motivations, different degrees of clarity, different constraints, and different resources. We move from different start point, different paths and end up with different destinations. In the End what matters most is whether the path followed by us is worth or not for your destination.

Well, first up....breezed thru this thread before deciding to subscribe...Gyan and opinion oozing out of this place after I discovered it on the PG home page...
Here's a piece/peace of (my) mind on what I think about essays..
Well, I have only 18 months of experience and stopped short of hitting the "Submit" button on the Duke,NYU,Yale,Ross,Ohio Fisher and Olin apps. Dint apply to even AIM or NUS...
And before you dismiss this as irrelevant...!!!
All this, despite having written the essays, fine polished them and reading them out to friends and family....
I think...its a bit of everything....I mean...like almost every other thing
The story has to be inspired by true life..But it all depends on the screenplay u see..How u make it...
Imagination, exaggeration, Narration, Interpretation..all this will make an essay impressive...
No one else's situation can be yours for an essay...
No one else can interpret your situation to help you write an essay...
You cant lie...unless you're on your way to an Academy award (in which case I cant possibly understand why you would want to spend on forget the MBA or application process...the GMAT itself is quite expensive!)
But cant disagree with what someone said here..That essays make you think really hard...they help you understand your own self...this is like a jhalak (preview) to a marketing course...How do you sell yourself in mere words?
Except that the target customer group is made up of sharp minds...They need real good reasons to buy you or your products and services...
Disclaimer: I havent applied to any US b skool..despite having a 700 plus GMAT..So..with due respect/modesty, I claim no experience in terms of the success of my essays or views regarding essays... | | | | | | | |

Just to bring back the topic of introspection and blah-blah abt the essay stuff, go thru what MIT has to say on its home page. MIT Sloan - MBA PROGRAM
(While standing atop Mt. Kilimanjaro in July 2003, Andrew McInnes, MBA ’07, observed firsthand the effects of global warming and realized something had to be done............)
this guy understood the global warning problem only after scaling the mountains. i am sure thr are better ways to know abt global warning.
If MIT has this article on its home page, one can know what type of essay writing B-Schools expect from applicants. If one feels strongly about a topic, he/she is expected to weave a storyline around that topic and in the process reveal his/her thought process. And this is the same talk that we repeatedly hear from ad-com and current students abt selling ur story to the school. | | | | | The Following User Says Thank You to rickyricks For This Useful Post: | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
