This was said by a second year student in the presence of the admission director. The write-comments-and-i'll-review-it etc is the official version. |
In the B school world, ISB is a kid. Do not generalize what happens at ISB - the school is not even 10 years old and is still in the infant stage. Schools in US have a process way ahead of ISB (if this is what ISB does).
In almost all the Bschools of US i've interacted with, the admissions decisions are taken by the senior AdComm members and not the student members. In Wharton and Chicago, the interview decisions are taken by these senior (or rather fulltime) AdComm members and Admit/Deny decisions are taken by the Admissions Director himself/herself. I know what exactly happens in chicago (because i've been speaking to ppl and i intend to be a member of the Chicago AdComm) and for a fact, they dont allow the first years even near the applications (reality check: ISB has only first years

). Even the second year members cannot simply hop in and say "i am in a reading mood today - so gimme five of those red files". They come through a touch selection process - every member is trained during the first year, evaluated over the one year, "interviewed" by the core AdComm team,
and only then offered a role. If u r wondering what the first years are evaluated against, they handle interactions with admitted students (all admitted students do not matriculate and these guys do a lot of school selling, doubt clarification, hand holding, etc etc. Point is - not an easy job) and also host welcome events, reach out activities for the admitted students etc. Pre Term is also handled by them.
I must admit here that the first year members have no selection procedures - ALL interested volunteers are welcome. But i'm happy with the fact that they are nowhere near my apps
