My personal preference is this:

If you are applying to 5-6 schools, you will most likely apply to 2 reach + 3 target + maybe 1 safety school. Then, take risk with one of your reach schools. If it pays off, great. If it does not, it does not really matter as it was a reach for you and your applications are anyway written in conventional ways for 1 reach + 3 target schools.

there is no fixed amount of work ex that can suffise.. People with zero workex make it to the top schools.. people with 5 years and above workex might just be left out.. Wat matters is what u did, how much managerial potential u displayed and also how well u can sell urself in ur SOP's.. but 3 years is a good starting point for most b schools..

as for what can cover up for it- again there is no 1 secret formula that will do it.. A lot of extra curricular, some extraordinary performance (say if u r Leander Pace at the age of 19).. there can be many things.. IMHO all that matter is how well u can sell urself at the end of it (btw- a good acad and a good GMAT score helps like nothing else- so make sure u dont miss out on those.. work on it while u can)..

This is not what I had in mind..
But then, it's not as worse as I thought it would be..

Your basic profile [gmat, work exp., acads?] would be definitely acceptable to most schools in the UK. Actually, except for LBS, your GMAT is a little ahead of the pack.

But all apps have to be considered as a whole, and your essays and recos will be critical. If you also have a fine acad track record, you are in with a good chance pal.

Hope it helped.

If you want to see how decisions are taken by admission directors, here are some videos of them in action. 3 applicant profiles discussed.

UNC MBA Admissions

It is really helpful, probably better than getting admission tips.

Hi Amitesh,

There are very few 1 year MBA courses but quite a few 16-month MBA courses. Some of these are:

1. NUS MBA (Full-Time) - 16-month program with an option to complete it in 12 months. (Average GMAT score 680-690 for Indian applicants)
2. AIM - 16-month program
3. Mays School of Business - 16-month program
4. ISB - 12-month program (Average GMAT score 710)
6. IIM A, C, L Executive Programs - I think 12 month programs (not sure)
7. XLRI GMP - 12 month program
8. Great Lakes - I think 12 month program (not sure)

There might be others that I am not aware of.

All the above programs do accept GMAT scores but frankly you GMAT is low by Indian standard as you can see from some of the averages I have stated above.

Thanks,
Abhishek.

Hi,

I am an aspirant for the MBA programme starting 2008. I have about 6 years of IT experience.

Now, I am not sure which specialization will be good for a person with my
profile. I see 3 courses relevant to my profile - General MBA, Strategy,
Technology. I would appreciate some more insights in these streams so
that I am in a better position to decide.
