Both the schools are pretty reputed for Finance, and Queen's does enjoy a very strong Finance faculty and high rapport with the top Financial Institutions and banks in Canada. That said, an internship is also a good way to build entry-level experience in an industry you want to enter.

I doubt people can answer the "better" question for you. It's for you to decide whether you are someone who would need an internship to build that level of comfort or credibility with the companies you are interviewing with.

Re: Queens 2008 admit taking questions.. - 07-07-2008, 05:06 PM

Hi Puys,

I have been following PG for quite some time now. Nontheless I had received admits to Queen's and Rotmans last year.

I had an interview with Lori Garnier on fe 27, 2008. I got an admit within the next few weeks.

After a lot of considerations I decided not to go to any of these schools and wait for another year for my MBA.

So this year another battle for admissions starts

XIIth- 69%
B.Tech- 72%

Along with all these, I'm have good comand over basic management concepts and subjects.

Being in ITES sector, I hope i fulfill the demand for diversity in terms of experience as required by most of the international colleges. My field of interest for MBA is Service Marketing/International Business.

Though I never had a foreign trip, but am good in handling international client. Right now I'm dealing with one of the Giant telecom company in Canada. And I can have recommendation from them as well.

Thumbs up Re: Queens 2008 admit taking questions.. - 04-09-2008, 02:40 AM

Hi All,

I was accepted to the class of 2008, but due to some health issues in the family, i took a deferral for 1 year. Thanks to the adcom, they agreed to give a deferral in my case. I am going to attend the program in 2009. I am currently in the process of applying for loan.

I know the admission process is still in the early stages. If and when you get an admission, pls post a message or im me.

Thanks,
Vijay

Hi Vijay,

Since u already have an admit and are in the process of applying for loans,

can you please paint a clear picture of what are estimated expenses for the complete Queens MBA (tution+living etc etc). May be you can share an approximate figure.

Also, what are the different loans avenues you are exploring. As far as i know, Indian Nationalised banks like SBI,PNB etc give a loan upto max of 20 lacs. What abt the rest amount ? How much wud the rest of the cost amount to (for complete Queens MBA) ?

It wud help me to plan better.

Thanx.

-idream.

Moreover, is TOEFL required for Queens? I am B.Tech from NIT Jalandhar. Have 4+ years of work ex with good software companies in India.

Queens TOEFL requirement says:
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Applicants whose native language is not English and whose undergraduate university studies were taken in a language other than English must achieve a satisfactory score on one of the accepted tests of facility in English (see chart below).

Applicants whose native language is not English but who have earned a university degree from an English-speaking institution will be exempt from this requirement only if they have worked in a country where English is an acknowledged primary language for a minimum of three consecutive years prior to the anticipated beginning of their MBA studies.
-----------------------------------------------------------------

In my opinion, I don't have to give TOEFL, but just want to have an expert opinion of the people here.

Thanx

Re: Queens 2008 admit taking questions.. - 16-09-2008, 01:10 AM

Hi idream,

I am applying load at Indian Overseas Bank. All the nationalized banks have more or less the same interest rates and other rules of repayment etc. My father has some contacts at IOB, so i opted for them. It is true that they will give loans to a max of Rs. 20 lacs. In my case i have savings that will cover for the rest.

Estimated tuition is 65000 USD/CDN (books & stationary included). If you are a bachelor you should look at around 1500 per month. This is according to one of the alumni (2006 batch), who was my project manager for 3 years.

I think it will be wise to factor in the inflation and plan for a total of 90000 USD/CDN. As close to this figure as possible.

As far as TOEFL is concerned, i got an exemption becuase i am working US for the last 5.5 years. They take this from case to case, but in my opinion if you have stayed or worked in a english speaking country for atleast 2 years they will surely give you an exemption. You can send them an email and describe your case, and see what they say.

So when do you plan to apply? Let me know if you have any q's.

Good Luck.

Re: Queens 2008 admit taking questions.. - 16-09-2008, 11:58 PM

Hi Vijay,

Following your advice, I wrote to Queen's describing my case for exemption from TOEFL. Guess what, they responded back & gave the waiver in flat 20 minutes. Too good and too fast

Now I can focus on my apps. I am planning to apply soon before the end of round 1.

Which city are you from? I am from Bangalore.

I have some questions though.

1. Considering the high cost (around 40 lakhs) of Queens MBA, do u think that ROI is commensurate with the investment (40 lakhs).

2. I just made a comparison. Ivey's MBA costs around 45 lakhs but their career services are something Ivey boast of to be the best. What about the career services of Queens? Do u think they are equally good and inspiring?

3. Can you provide some inspiring stories of good placements of Indian students after Queen's MBA ?

4. Put a word about scholarships from Queen's.

I would be solely dependent on loans for funding my MBA program. Hence anything in the form of scholarships etc would be helpful to me.

Please pour in your insights.

Thanx

-idream

Re: Queens 2008 admit taking questions.. - 17-09-2008, 12:54 AM

hey idream,

Congrats on the TOEFL waiver. Queen's adcom & support staff are very prompt with the queries. I am located in Jacksonville, FL (USA).

In terms of ROI, i think you have to have a long term plan. It is impossible to think about what will be your career projection and associated salary growth over the first 3 to 5 years post-MBA. In my opinion you cannot choose a college based on ROI. If you think doing an MBA at this point in your career will give you more career growth opportunities then you should go for it and not try to quantify in terms of money.

There is not much to choose b/w Ivey & Queen's in terms of placements. However the career counselling/coaching you get in Queen's is much better. Think abt it, the same companies visit them, and they are going to have the same expectations for the designations they are recruiting, so why would they have huge differences in the salaries? Remember that the post-MBA salaries are dependent on your prior experiences and not the fact that you have an MBA degree.

What you should consider in choosing b/w these colleges is the teaching style, i personally liked the emphasis on team based learning in Queen's. Whether the teaching methodology allows you to make the best out of the learning experience then you should go for it.

Don't expect any scholarship if you are not a Canadian citizen. I did not get any. On the website there are couple of organizations that give loans to international students, but i think they will need a co-signee who is a US/Canadian citizen.

I do not know abt inspiring stories but as per the latest employment stats report on the website all the Indian students from 2007 batch got jobs. I only know one alumni personally and he is well palced within Canada.
