Thumbs up My Experience of the MBA tour in mumbai - 07-12-2006, 04:19 PM

hey guys,

i had been to the tour in Mumbai yesterday. It was a great event (though i didnt ask many ques to the school reps). The ambience was gr8. I met aim_wsc and the_ manager there.

In the start there was a seminar on studies in canada. The admission directors of the Rotman school and Richard Ivey were there. They talked at length about the studies in canada. There was a ques posted. It was 'Aren't the salaries paid to grad students comparatively lower than those paid to stud from US coll'. They admitted to it and the said that if one looks at the other side, the money one has to shell out is also significantly lower than what one does in a US school. Also the time it takes to pay back the money is lesser. It seems getting a work permit in canada is much easier than the US. I beg to differ. i feel its the other way round. Correct me if i am wrong. Then, they talked abt indians staying back in canada for a longer time after their course completion….blah blah… It was kinda OK.

Then the FAIR started. Most of the top colleges had come to the fair. Wharton, Emory, Chicago, Columbia etc were present. Even in the Mumbai fair, the NUS stand was a bit crowded compared to the others. Wharton was at a corner. I couldnt locate that school till the end!!!
I approached the darden alum first. That guy was 29 yrs old. (he didnt look 29 but much younger). He, i felt, was a bit arrogant in talking to the public. There was a guy from the army. He was talking with the alum. I was a silent spectator. The way he answered the ques, i felt, was a bit rude. But.... stepping into his shoes, poor soul might have been very tired doing the same job for a long time. The ques posted to that guy were:

1) The kind of student body in darden
2) strength of the class
3) placement opprtunities.
4) Avg pay
5) Applications received by darden and the number of students selected

Answers by him:

1) Mixed. There are arnd 30 to 35 indians in a batch. Most of them from a varied of backgrnd.
2) Arnd 300.
3) Students get placed very quickly. 98% get placed within the 1st month.
4) 150K $
5) 3500 apllications and 300 selected. This time the applications intake is gonna be doubled to around 7000.
So the competition is fiercer.

Then I went to the TUCK school. There were 3 people there. 2 older guys and 1 young female alum. Not much talk with those guys. Then I moved on to the check out the various schools that had come to the fair. Had a small chat with nanyang, NUS (they didn’t allow anyone to speak. They spoke continuously …hehe…).

I was getting a bit bored there. Then I went to attend a seminar on GMAT prep and strategy. It was delivered by one Mr. Matt Symonds. That guy’s the director of the world MBA tour. The guy was terrific. The seminar he delivered, I thought, was just fantabulous. He held the crowd’s attention for more than an hour.(now that’s a difficult thing to do)!!!

Then there was a lecture on finance by a prof. I was too tired to sit for that. Came out, roamed thru a few stalls. That’s it…Finish…completed…..The end.

That was a tiring, but fantastic experience. The take away for a person like me was the motivation (looking at the motivated crowd arnd u), talking with alums and directors of colls like wharton, Darden, Tuck ……

U actually feel the competition and come to terms with reality. Getting in the coll isn’t a cake walk as one feels. ITS TOUGH…But believe me its not impossible.

Re: iPod winner - 11-12-2006, 10:06 PM

some story to tell you people:
i met a college kid in local train when i was heading to MBA fair.

(if you read my article @ my blog, you know what i m talking)
In fair i met estranged_gnrs and ultra-lord we had some chat & we moved on.
i said to Rohit( estranged gnrs) before leaving ki there are some bunch of college students (age ~20) have come....
i ll do some marketing of pg.com & we dispersed.

as i met those college guys i told them how i got pass MBA forum websites

and then comes the name ////

errrm ?
sorry?
come again ?

haa?
PAGAL GUY

that s the name?

aisa koi naam hai kya ?
you r kidding.

naah!
....................................

& this goes on till i said you just type the goddamm word on url and check yourself.

now i can understand what a painful job Rohit and team might have.
& how this site stood up cant imagine how ALLWIN did a marketing of the site. ...
