Excerpts from Duke info session.
Teri : Greetings and welcome. We`re glad you`re all here.
: Welcome to Fuqua Talk. My name is Bev. I am the daytime counselor for General Management and Brand Management.
: Hi everyone. I`m Dalton, Assistant Director of International Programs & Opportunities. I`m also a 2004 graduate of the Daytime MBA program.
: Which sectors ( Consulting/ Finance/ Others) constitute the maximum % of career opportunities at Fuqua
Teri : All our employment statistics are available on the CMC external website at the following link
Duke University- The Fuqua School of Business- Career Management Center-. The top 3 sectors from the 2005-2006 academic year are as follows: fulltime- 23% financial services, 19% consulting, 12% consumer products; internship-25% financial services, 16% consumer products, 9% consulting.
: Hi..Can you please elaborate on the opportunities in strategy and consulting..?
Teri : Please clarify your question for me. What specifically would you like to know? Thank you.
: Can you please through some light on Strategic Planning Practicum ?
: The SPP is actually an optional two-term course that occurs in Terms 2 & 3. The Career Management Center is not involved with the course directly and thus we can`t speak to it in as much depth as our faculty can, but our students find it a useful way to get practical experience (especially in consulting) prior to graduation.
: Are Recruitments after MBA dependent on location i.e. more opportunities in industries/ organizations located close to the B-School?
: The opportunites available to our MBAs after graduating are dispersed throughout the world, including in the Carolinas. We are fortunate to live in the RTP area where many companies have chosen to make this area their headquaters and therefore creating professional opportunities for residents. Please advise if you were looking for more specifics on opportunites in the NC area.
: for a person new to consulting, how can he get to the opportunities in consulting through FUQUA?
: It is a combination of on- and off-campus recruiting, with the larger top consulting firms interviewing on-campus and a number of boutique consulting firms posting jobs with us, allowing students to submit resumes to them for off-campus interviews. In addition, students can get involved in a many activities focused on preparing for a career in consulting, such as our annual Consulting Symposium, case interviewing workshops, and social events with company representatives.
: Can you please through some light on how the concentrations help in the summer intern and the final job?
Teri : Since the concentrations are new this year, it is still to be determined how they might help. The intention for the concentrations is to enable our students to gain depth and breadth in a specific field to better prepare them for the internship and full time job.
: What percentage of students get jobs on campus, before graduation?
Teri : I will point you to our employment statistics which can be found at the following link
Duke University- The Fuqua School of Business- Career Management Center-. For the 2005-2006 academic year, 84% of student seeking employment received a job offer before graduation.
: Are the interviews for summer interns done on campus?
Teri : Yes, we have several companies that come on campus in Term 3 to conduct interviews for internships.
: How difficult or easy for an international student to get a job in US after MBA?
: It varies by function. US companies in consulting and banking are more likely to sponsor internationals for US opportunities than other functions. However, each year we have international students that find jobs both on- and off-campus for marketing, operations, finance, etc. At the Duke MBA, we also have a proprietary database called H-1BLUE DEVIL that allows our international students to search companies that sponsored international students for H-1B working visas after graduation by US State, job function, and job title keyword. H-1BLUE DEVIL`s search capability by job title and MBA function make it a significant improvement over the pay services used by others.
: I forgot to attach the transcript request form with my transcripts. But me transcripts have a cover letter telling the grading system we have and that we do not follow rank system. Is that ok or transcripts request form is absolutely necessary
: We are not involved with the Admissions process in depth, so please contact our Admissions department for the most accurate answer to this question.
: What does the company looks for in the placement? If i am not from a consulting background but took many courses in consulting does the company prefer only consulting background candidates?
Teri : Consulting companies do not necessarily look for a background. Consulting firms are looking for industry experience, strong analytical & strategic thinking skills, and strong communication skills.
betherejess : Have you found internships in the Health Care Management Sector to be readily available?
Teri : Here is the link to the employment report:
Duke University- The Fuqua School of Business- Career Management Center- which outlines all our 2005-2006 employment date. In the class of 2006, 8% of the students seeking a job went into the health care sector. In the class of 2007, 8% of students seeking found an internship in the health sector.
: I am planning to switch careers from engineering (software) to management consulting and am extremely keen on strategy consulting. Is that a difficult switch to make? What would help me prepare better for consulting jobs?
: You will be in good company. Many of our students are transitioning out of an engineering role. Students who have strong analytical / quantitative skills and are result oriented will attract the attention of recruiter in the consulting field. The recruiters also look for someone who has very strong interpersonal skills as well. Your ability to communicate these strengths clearly and concisely is critical. I recommend that you begin working on your "elevator" speech. The is the speech you will use to introduce yourself. This introductory statement, which is usually anywhere from 30 seconds to 2 minutes, should include 3 - 4 strenghts that you want the recruiter to know about you. You should also begin to think about your accomplishments and what skills you used. Write them down. You`ll be glad you did.
: Hi all, regarding job placements, how is it distributed in the US?
Teri : The majority of the class of 2006 went to the northeast. For more details, please refer to our 2005-2006 Employment Report which can be found at the following URL:
Duke University- The Fuqua School of Business- Career Management Center-
: Could you please describe how the CMC supports and helps students with direction over the two year duration? Thank you.
: The CMC provides support in a variety of formats. Most importantly, we provide an overall framework to prepare for recruiting (including resumes, cover letters, and interview preparation). Within that framework we offer workshops on more specific topics like self-assessment, networking, personal branding, etc. We also provide job preparation feedback in 1-on-1, small group, and peer formats. Finally, we are available for two hours a day on a walk-in basis for quick questions and time-sensitive topics. When you return after your internship, we help you process that experience and adjust your strategy. Some students prefer more guidance than others, so our variety of formats are able to meet all students` needs.
: Is there a concept of "open" interview slots at Duke, where a student can bid for an interview slot?
: Yes. Our office recommends that 50% of a company`s interview slots remain open for bidding.
: What about financial services company ? I heard that getting into asset management is hard if you do not have prior financial background? Is it true? What about Investment banking companies ? Do they hire people who are switching careers
Teri : Asset management is one of the areas of financial services that can prove more challengeing. However, Fuqua has a strong Asset Management Club that works with the Financial Services Counselor to conduct activities that supports students in their search efforts in the Assest Management field. Investment banking does value finance backgrounds, but many students are successful in making the switch each year.
: Is there any signifact difference in 2005 placement vs 2006 placement. Any new trends ?
: One notable trend in 2006 was a higher % employment in consulting at 22% vs. 17% in 2005. For other trends, please refer to our employment 2005 & 2006 statistics at:
Duke University- The Fuqua School of Business- Career Management Center-
: Does the amount of past work experience ( number of years) play a major role in the kind of profile one gets after MBA
: I am not sure what you mean by "play a major role in the kind of profile one gets after MBA?) A students past experience does influence the opportunities available to the student, however, the quality of the experience is equally important in attracting high profile opportunities. What is critical is your ability to communicate relevant experience in a clear and concise manner.
: How about job placements outside the US for international students, for instance, do europen companies recruit at Duke?
: We do have some international companies interview on campus from Asia & Europe (e.g., INFOSYS, Shinsei Bank, etc.), and many more that post jobs with us. We also have student trips to international locations like Hong Kong & London each year to meet with companies. A student that is targeting a particular geography will be able to locate companies using a combination of resources including on- and off-campus postings, student trips, alumni, career website, and our library.
: What are the resources available to network with alumni for jobs? Does duke have a system where the student can get in touch with an pursuing similar interests?
: We are very forutnate to have very active and passionate alumni. They make themselves available in many ways: 1. The Alumni Database 2. Volunteer to assist students during our formal Mock Interview week (They travel to Fuqua specifically to offer support) 3. They volunteer to support student sponspored events and conferences 4. They invite students to email or call them to offer advice on career paths and strategy as they have walked down a similar path The list goes on and on ....
: When a student comes to DUke is there any counselling regarding career?
: We recognize that we will likely have many students that may be undecided as it relates to their career path. With that in mind, we offer workshops, tools, and counseling to assist you in this discovery. The second year students are also extremely helpful as well in helping first year student sort out the many, many options available to them. Eventually, most students discover their passion(s) through these resources.
: Thank you
: It is our pleasure!
: What are the positions that are offered for entrants in consulting and corporate strategy and other specializations?
: Information about full time positions accepted by the Class of 2006 are located on our general website. Consulting represented 22% of the positions accepted. The type of positions within consulting are very broad. Strategic business planning represented 5% of the positions accepted. You can find the list of companies within these two functional areas on our website. Thank you.
Duke University- The Fuqua School of Business- Career Management Center-
: Thank you for your interest in The Duke MBA program. We look forward to partnering with you as you begin to shape your new career.
: What is your suggestion for prospectives who wish to go for consulting? Are there anythings you suggest we should do from career perspective if we join Duke?
: Consulting is a very competive area. You must have very strong analytical and quantitative skills as well as good interpersonal skills. Start practicing for case interviews. Work on your elevator pitch (how you introduce yourself). Know the 3 - 4 strenghts you have to offer. Be clear and concise when communicating.
: Thank you very much. The session is very informative.
: Our pleasure.
