Hi ,
I have been looking at Goizueta since some time. My profile :
GMAT 710, 7 years experience, Indian IT, 1 yr international exp in Europe/US, Currently in US, Worked throughout in a top Fortune 20 company
I am looking at 1 yr MBA and hence Goizueta is a distinct favorite. I have the following questions. Please have a look.
- Is my experience level a hindrance for Goizueta, a bit on the higher side ? I guess the average experience level for 1 yr MBA is 5 years..
- If possible, I would like to move to Consulting, or I might stay back in IT.. I know career changing is very difficult for 1 yr MBA candidates, but still, are you aware of any people who managed to do it ? How are the placements/roles for IT ?
- Can I expect substantial aid ?
- Are the placement opportunities for 1 yr MBA comparable to those for 2 yr MBA ? Are the recruiters biased towards 2 yr MBA guys ? Given that 1 yr MBA is not the norm in US..
Thanks

Hi Akshat,
Just wondering if you could throw some light on 'What is FLEX / CORE concept of electives??'.
Also, as Goizueta follows rolling applications process, I suppose applying R1 or R2 does not make that much of a differnce... Is my understanding correct?

Bang | I am looking at 1 yr MBA and hence Goizueta is a distinct favorite. I have the following questions. Please have a look.
- Is my experience level a hindrance for Goizueta, a bit on the higher side ? I guess the average experience level for 1 yr MBA is 5 years.. No, although our average experience level is 5 years, the adcom do not take a specific experience level into consideration when admitting a candidate to the program, and oftentimes have students whose experience level is higher/lower than the average. 5 is only that-an average. The Admissions Committee does take your pre-MBA experience very seriously. I would say that "it's not quantity, it's quality" of experience that matters
- If possible, I would like to move to Consulting, or I might stay back in IT.. I know career changing is very difficult for 1 yr MBA candidates, but still, are you aware of any people who managed to do it ? How are the placements/roles for IT ? That is a difficult question, many consulting companies do prefer candidates who have either a background in consulting or have completed a consulting internship. Though if you are able to demonstrate that you have the right skills and acumen for the consulting profession, you will be able to find the required placements. The One-Year Program is not for career switchers, but that's not to say that people don't try it. One year MBA students have access to all of the same resources as the two-years, but some two-years value the summer internship if they are career switchers. It affords them the opportunity to gain experience and learn whether they like the field or not. In the current one year mba batch i could not find a career switcher in IT Consulting, though there are a couple of switchers in IT marketing and project management.
- Can I expect substantial aid ? I have already mentioned before , Aid is based on academic merit. There are a number of factors that are considered for the same including the applicant pool for that particular year. I have already included the financial aid information in my earlier posts.
- Are the placement opportunities for 1 yr MBA comparable to those for 2 yr MBA ? Are the recruiters biased towards 2 yr MBA guys ? Given that 1 yr MBA is not the norm in US.. One Year MBA's have access to same resources as the second year and apply alongwith them. Though there may be cetain industries primarily I-Banking / Consulting where a prior experience or internship may be required in that industry. Education is when you read the fine print and experiance is what you get if you don't

Your research is getting better and attention to detail is commendable.
For completing your graduate requirements, you have to take 9 core courses. The rest of courses are your electives. You have the option of waiving of a core course and taking a elective in its place. Core courses are basic courses while electives are specialized courses.
For ex, Accounts is a Core Course. If you have a background in accounting, you might want to waive the basic course and take a elective in its place. In some areas you might have to choose an elective from the same department like marketing and IT while in others like finance you do not have to.
The waiver exams are held at the begining of every semester. They are generally in the format of a 3 hr exam. If you score satisfactory marks in these the concerned professor may allow you a waiver from the course.
Therefore you get more bang for your buck. Education is when you read the fine print and experiance is what you get if you don't

Thanks Akshat for taking out the time to answer our questions.
I completed my application for Emory today, after a month long effort.
Now eagerly awaiting the results. When do you think I will hear from them.
Thanks

Hello Akshat
Do people without any significant extra curriculars and community work stand a chance of getting admitted.I have a pretty good Gmat score and my acads are good too.will this make up for my low extra curriculars.

Hey congratulations on completing the process. I know its a herculean effort. You can expect a call anytime after 15 days and the deadline for the decision. Its a tough call. i got my interview call after 2 months. Its nail biting time.
But see the bright side. All the major prep is over. Therefore stop worrying. Interview is about soft skills. therefore you can relax a bit. Chill out enjoy with friends. Education is when you read the fine print and experiance is what you get if you don't

Are all business leaders the most intelligent people on the planet. Is Bill Gates the most intelligent man on earth. Think about it. You would get your answers.
