Low GMAT score.. is it worth applying with it or better to reapper for GMAT - 23-07-2006, 01:38 PM

Hello Friends,

I got a pathetic score of 540 in GMAT. Had a bad day...

I want to know if a decent academic record can make up for a low GMAT score while applying to B-Schools like RSM, MBS , NUS...

My academic record is decent (GPA of 3.4 in BBM) and a rank from Bangalore University.
I also have fair amount of achievements in extra-curriculars and work-experience of about 2.5 yrs in my family owned export firm.

Kidly advice........

Abhishek

Kaplan standard is definitely higher for both verbal and quant. Go through the excercises in Kaplan, and do give the Kaplan full length tests as well.

All the best!

------Posting it again here ------

Hi Abhi,

I have not taken GMAT yet .... and no one know what is in store for me .... but I am replying to ur Queries on the basis of the knowledge I have gathered from people around ...

First of all my friend! Relax .....There is a bad day in everyone's life .... and there is something called the "worst" day!

You can do it! ... [I think i saw ur post somewhere else also] .... My friend the only "strategy" to fair well is Hard work .... I know you must have read that people scored 750+ with just two weeks of preps .... but even they put some hard work at some point in their life ... which helped them now!!!

So nothing can stop you pal! Go for it .... Take it again and you will come with flying colors

Do i even stand a chance in any good University ( RSM, MBS, NUS, etc.) with such a score.
Frankly ... No My friend ... if you see the Average scores of these schools would be around 660 - 690 ....

I have a decent Academic record ( GPA 3.4 - app. 84 - 85% in my BBM) and hols a rank from the Bangalore University. My extra - curicullars are good and have an all round achievement award from the College for the same.

Work Ex: -

I am curerently working in my family owned export venture and will complete 2.5 yrs by Oct 2006 (app. 3.5 yrs by the time i take up the course). Also have international experience due to the nature of the business...

Query: -

I would like to know if the above profile of mine can negate the effects of a low GMAT score on my application if i have fairl good essays. Is it worth applying with this score or will i be better off if i reappear for the GMAT... although..am extremely low on confidence after getting a low score inspite of preparing well...
As again my friend ..... I would say your Profile is Good .... but Not "excellent" .... Excellent would have been you started that export business and took it to next level in just 2.5 yrs .....
So, It cant shadow your GMAT Score ...... And in my opinion ... even "excellent" profiles need some GMAT Score for their Application to be considered!
Just put urself in place of Adcom and you will realise .... Adcom doesnt even read applications if GMAT scores are lower beyond a level .... they belive if he is good .... he can do better .... Your Profile is considered only after the GMAT score .... Though GMAT is not the only important thing .... It is a very important thing of your Application!
There is another reason which goes behind this ..... See the funda behind GMAT is .... its a preliminary test for any college to make sure you have necessary skills to take up a course like MBA .... which requires serious mathematical and Analytical skills ..... Once they are sure u have it good enuff they look at other parts of ur profile

I have appeared on GMAT day before and got 520. I have never got this score while taking up tests. I was also not expecting anything more than 700 also. I was prepeaerd arround 650 to 700. The big surprise came in verbal as obvious to me. My scaled score for verbal was 17 and quantitative 46. It leads to total 520. I am not sure about why verbal was so low and I never imagined something went wrong also during tests. I also had not much time for preparation.

I have about 15 years of working experience out of which since last year have been working in Italy in capacity of Assistnt General Manager. I have done M.Tech. with first position with CGPA 9.33/10 and M.Sc. with 74.8% marks (again first position).

Is it possible to apply to some university with such score and backgroundor reapply for GMAT. I was also considering GRE as an option because In India GMAT or GRE considered for MBA. I am not very good in verbal and have not much confidence for improving although not so bad that I got.

Please suggest.
Rakesh
