Considering 2-3 months timescale, I think you should manage your time "really" well. Assuming you do well on the GMAT, ~October 2007 will be the right time to apply to the B schools.

No. Simply because there are so many like you, you will find so many fellow IIM's on this thread itself! (Indian IT Male a term coined by Mr. Johny Cage from our forum )
However, if you work through the class profiles, and especially people of a similar profile as yours, and can show that you are different, and can add value to their program, of course all of this apart from your significant achievements, career progress etc. then you should fancy chances at these schools, hope others will give you a better take.

In such a timescale, while you are working.... NO. I would advise so, as you already have crunch time.

Hi funky,

I
I took my gmat last year and managed 720(40v,49q).
Considering your engineering background I don’t think so that you require any coaching for gmat. Just get the right material and crack GMAT. Another advice is not to rush into GMAT, even if you take GMAT in June or July it would not make any difference as the application process begins only in August-September.

Your chances at 15 b schools depend upon how you present your profile to admission committee. Though 22 months is slightly on the lower side but still if kind of experience you gained in 22 months which many may not achieve in 4 years, then your chances are brighter then the 4 years experienced guy.
And remember IF U DONT THINK THAT U HAVE ANYTHING EXCEPTIONAL, HOW WOULD U CONVINCE THE ADCOM .
So have confidence and go all out for it.

hey ppl...i was in a dilemma ...thought this wil be the best place to put it as compared to some other pg threads...so here it goes..

first of all im currently in my final yr engineering, electronics and communication.

i presently have 2 job offers...Caritor and Tata Elxsi...donno if u ve heard about them but caritor is a total software services company while tata elxsi offers design and development(in the field of embedded etc...basically deals wit tronics).

now caritor has no bond but tata has a 2 yr bond.
i am very much interested to do an mba abroad and dont wanna wait for a long while coz i want to join my dad to expand his business(its into electronics too) as soon as possible.

i could ve written gmat for fall 07 admissions as i look back but wanted to give my cat so chose that option(though i landed wit just 86 percentile...wit pretty much nil preparations).

from wat i heard from a few ppl...they say services company is always better if u wanna do an mba...but there r hardly any options for an ec student to join a hardware company(tata is one of the few today in the market.).

so my q is how do u think i can go about this...wel i dont ve much of extra curricular activities to show(been foolishly ignorant..realised too late) but acads is decent so far(avgin aroun 78% aggre) .

hope i ve covered al my points of doubt if u ve any q plz ask so..

hopin for a positive response....

thanks....c ya..

Re: 2008 MBA (international - U.S.) Aspirants Joint - 27-04-2007, 10:40 PM

Hi,

This is my first post on this forum,so let me start by a brief intro abt.me

Have 34 months experience in an oil and gas PSU.
Decent acads. Around 65% agggregate(BE Instrumentation) from Mumbai university.
XII : 90%
X : 85%
Also decent extracurriculars.

From all the previous posts that I have read I would think that I am an outsider to this forum as I am not the typical IIM(Indian IT Male) .
Well I have some queries regarding MBA in US.
Firstly regarding the fees/financeing, if I apply to B-schools outside the top 15-20 in US are there chances of aid/schol. with my profile.:(

Also another thing is that I am absolutely fed up with my job(sarkari naukri!! )
So I wanted to know that if I quit the job and prepare for GMAT and the indian entrance exams and then spend time on my applications for US b-schools, would that be OK?
I've got almost 3 yrs experience and US B-schools generally look for atleast 2 yrs ,so that should be OK,wouldn't it?
Or atleast would I be able to convince them better if I was doing some course and hence trying to add value to my resume?

Re: 2008 MBA (international - U.S.) Aspirants Joint - 28-04-2007, 09:05 AM

Hey Saur..

This is just regarding the questions that you've posted...I'm going to direct my answer directly in line to applying to top programmes in the US. When the schools in the US say they want applicants with atleast 2 - 3 yrs experience they dont really look at the numbers but rather they look at what you've done in those 2 - 3 years. ( For example have you closed multi million dollar deals?, have you got a patent under your name? have you written your own publication? how fast were you promoted? what leadership roles did you have in the company? etc etc etc...)

So my personal advice -

Should you quit your job to do your entrance exam?

A strong NO. 1000's of probables work and study for the GMAT every year. Judging from your acads, Im sure you can too. Plus its extra money!

Is 3 years enough?

Evaluate your work experience. What have you gained? What has your path in those three years been? Are you moving towards your short term goals and long term goals? Im completeing 3 years of work ex in June. I still personally think Ive got to give one year more before I go for my MBA. Because at the end of the day its not an MBA thats going to teach you how to handle every day situations in business - well atleast not everything. You'll learn that only by actually working!

Should I do a course?

Again first question - What kind of course? Im not sure if you are aware but there are a good number of people who work, take up a few courses on the side and study for they're GMAT as well. So I suggest you put a lot of thought into this option before leaving your job.

Regarding the finances - I think its best for some one else to give you a concrete answer as I am yet to complete my research in monetary area.

Hope this helps you..

Cheers..

Rosh

NONE except at the parties and cultural functions I arranged. Again.......

P.S No intention at all to mock at the comments made by Rosh... He has given a perfect advise... I just felt bad of myself, that with none of the above I might not get an admit anywhere at all :(

Hey Abhi,

Humourous reply, and I take it in light vein. When I typed out my reply I was keeping in mind post MBA placements because no matter what anyone says - at the end of the day the real question is - will you go places after your MBA? Most of the B-Schools claim Mckinsey, Booz Allen, BCG etc and the likes recruit their students. But would we be one of those students? I strongly believe if our pre-MBA credentials are strong it speaks volumes about us as individuals and making the cut and seeing big money would come automatically - coupled ofcourse with a renowed MBA tag!.

And regarding those questions - not to sound to egoistic but fortunately for me I can say that I can answer positively to 3 out of those four questions.

All the very best for your prep and application process. It would be irony if we both meet at harvard!

Cheers.

Rosh
