The rationale behind the MBA provision was to have more people with Master's Degrees & MBA's choosing to work in the UK. No harm applying direct, and many people who apply genuinely fulfil the points requirement to get an HSMP. That however, is the objective part. There're a few other
subjective requirements that the UK evaluators also look at. From what I've seen through some friends who applied direct:
a) Unless you've achieved something spectacular / outrageous (that can be documented & proven - like award / citation / newspaper article), you need to have a
Master's or Doctoral Degree - in a
hard, quantitative and professionally applicable subject like an MBA, MCA or Master's in Econ, Engineering or Accounting (like CA CWA or CS along with B.Com), Ph.D in certain Sciences (Biology or Chemistry etc..). You need to have these from
recognized universities like the RECs / IIT's / IIMs or one of the Big state Univs like Delhi Univ, Calcutta, Bombay or Madras, Bangalore, Osmania etc.. The Academic qualifications are quite
seriously examined. A close friend of mine was rejected because the HSMP evaluators refused to recognise his PGDM from TA Pai Manipal

.
b) You need to have at least 5-7 years of experience in a field that will
materially contribute to the UK economy - which is any industry where the above qualifications are applicable. I'm talking IT, Financial Services / Banking, Life Sciences, healthcare, pharma, biotech, alternative Energy, Retail, manufacturing (
Technical / operational NOT administrative).
c) Your salary should be comfortably over INR 8L (if you're working in India). A comfortable bank account (they'll know if these documents are fabricated, so ensure these are genuine).
d) Documentary & detailed proof of work experience & residence - including detailed job descriptions & certifications from all employers (which is difficult to get for job-hoppers). Certified or Notarized copies of each form 16 filed for tax return. In addition to your marriage certificate, you need to show your spouse & yourself have lived together through mail correspondence (electricity or phone bill or joint bank account or credit card statements).... There may more I've forgotten about.
e) A
well qualified spouse would help. If he / she has education and experience applicable in the UK, you will score a few points more and will find approval easier.
f) English language ability (spoken and written). Poor English will disqualify you regardless of any qualification or experience you might have.
It's a delicate balance. If the pass mark is 65, many applicants will probably reach there, but don't need to do more. Meaning, you shouldn't get greedy to ensure 85 points to get easier approval, because there's no such thing. At 65 & above, ALL applications & evaluations and
equal - an applicant with 85 can get rejected, while one with 70 can get approved! It is subjective.
Go in with your eyes open... this is not easy. IF you're earning more than INR 10-12L in India and are in a good company + good position + your wife earns a comfortable amount as well, the benefit to your life from working in the UK is marginal at best.
Good Luck
P.S - Not a lawyer or expert, NOT in the UK, I went halfway through an HSMP application before I decided the effort wasn't worth the very marginal to nil benefit of working / living in the UK (I live in mainland Europe).
