Hi Priyank ,

Listen this is my personal opinion.
NUS is a better option than the other 2 coll ...So if you can wait till the result for NUS comes out ... its the best option

MBS ... Keep one thing in mind about Australia ... Its not America !!!
I mean MBA doesnt have such a high craze in Australia .. besides Visa rules arent that great . U need to leave Aus as soon as ur studies are over !!! So what hapens is that Indian ppl keep on doing additional courses just to stay in the country and looking for jobs

IIT Mumbai - Reasonalbly good option in terms of money and reputation.but keep in mind its not the best ( sorry to be so crude ) I mean with institutes like ISB having 500+ ppl in their batch , how do u plan to tackle so many MBAs graduating each year ? But still I would insists its a overall a good option

hope the my opinion helps ... Keep me updated abt ur final plans and best of luck !

Hi Adipals ,
Thanks ...

Well a high GMAT score ALWAYS matter for Indian students .

Not that it is eveything but when there are so many Indian students with similar profile , a better scores does give an edge in your candidature profile .
Cant gaurentte that a high 700 + GMAT score would pave ur way to the successful admission .But it would certainly help...

The International B School look for diversity and community service a lot . ( And I mean they really EMPHASISE on THEM )
So if you have a highlighing career/ community profile , chance are good for selection .

But honestly speaking ,how many of us Indians do the job which we are interested at ? I am a guy from software industry and the only reason I got into IT
is bcos it pays well for freshers and the market for IT jobs is on a boom . But does doing an outsourced job is really going to make me look different from rest of the Indian applicant ? I dont think so ....

Got the picture ? Sorry to be crude ...
Ideally I would say 670+ is a good score to apply ( U will find ppl with scores of 660 going to Duke Fuqua in thepagalguy forum ... )
( 700 + really Good )

Hey dude....

Thanks for ur help...
I have got an admit into NUS aslo..
Just got a call from their side confirming my final offer...

I still hold that probably Australia would be a better option in terms of following parameters.....

1) May be cost is more but isnt the quality of education very good..I heard there are some courses which r taught by professors from harvard...

2) MBS and AGSM are the top schools in Asia Pacific.. ..may be better than IIMS of India..

3) Regarding VISA rules.. I talked to IMS GMAT head, mumbai...
he is an AGSM graduate..he says there is no VISA problem for MBS and AGSM graduates..He insists that these 2 schools get preferential treatment over there...

This is wat I have gathered..but I am novice in International MBA statistics...

Can u give me ur personal email id and phone number..
I want to talk u regarding this one a one to one basis.....

Hi Priyank ,

See the final decisions should be yours , I have shared with u whatever I have delt about the universities .....

1) first of all even if AGSM and MBS get preferential treatment , the Visa Rules arent going to change for them , right ? So u would be in a bit shaky positon if u dont have a job at the end of the course and would be asked to leave since ur visa would have expired .
So unless u have thought of plans how to manage for a job after MBA , u might face issues.
Thing is I hadnt and thats why I am going NUS and not AGSM ......

2) I dont know but I find a bit unusual that a guy who did his MBA from AGSM has to come back at IIMS to councel . It better be a personal decision .......

So my friend , you have to take the final call .
After all I could be wrong like other mortals

Hey Priyank,

Congrats on your admit to NUS, SJMSOM and AGSM.
Here is my take on this. But at first let me tell ya that I have admits from NUS and top-tier US schools.

Truly speaking any B-school outside India faces some problems in placing students with less work ex and this is true for NUS, AGSM , US schools etc. This is when you realise that you get frustrated and loose the focus on getting the right job.

Secondly, if you are looking for a career change to lets say Finance or consultancy, then US and Indian B-schools are much better. Am not saying that career shift is not possible at NUS or AGSM, but isnt easy.. You might have to start afresh at the bottom of the ladder and then make the same effort to rise up as you had done as a fresher.

Thirdly,
Indian B-schools will use your work ex to add one more point to your score list while selection. Post admission you are as good as fresher and yor experiences are not cherished. This is definitely not an issue outside-India.

Do not take MBA as a catalyst where you can change your function and domain. Only is possible. What I mean is that you cannot change from a mfg company to Morgan Stanley without a strong purpose. It is possible that Morgan Stanley comes out with some product which caters to mfg industry , then you would be the right choice.

All said and done, I saw very impressive list of recruiters at AGSM and SJMSOM. Not to say that NUS doesnt have that.. But yes AGSM and SJMSOM seemed better on paper.

The big point about SJMSOM is that its a fast rising school and also you get a big brand behind you :: IIT... SJM SOM is the best in IIT 's MBA progs.. If you think that you would not get into that hassle of searching a job post "Foren" B-schools. SJMSOM should be the place. At the end, its your decision.

Re: Admitted in NUS Singapore : Queries Welcomed - 19-06-2006, 10:57 AM

Ques for an NUS Admit.

I am an Indian who works in the IT space who wants to shift to Finance from IT specially Money Management by doing an MBA from the top schools. (Still to decide for sure what I want to specialize in, but for now I think it fairs sound enough). I have NUS on my radar for over a year.

1. How difficult is it at NUS for students from the non-finance background to shift to the Finance environment. Are there any pre requisites for such a shift? Could you please elaborate on the career shifts that happen? I am unable to understand how the whole thing works.

2. I know that work ex is considered at the time of the starting of the course. By Aug 2007 I will have 2 years of work ex. So if I do plan to apply for the course starting in August 07 I have to apply this year and at that time I will have a work ex of only 15 months, do I really stand a chance ?

3. I think I can convince the adcom why I want to shift to Finance, but if I do get rejected because of substantially lower work ex do you think it will hamper my chances for the course starting in August 08 (I think I have a realistic chance for August 08 because by then I will be having about 3 yrs of work ex.

4. My extracurricular activities include social service. I have been instrumental in forming this club of college friends who have started donating money and now helping 2 NGOs both financially and personally. That is something that I am really proud of. ·

5. In addition to that I give lectures on investments and stocks and mutual funds in particular as I personally think that this awareness in the new generation is almost non-existant. I have given lectures for the batch of new joinees in my office and continue to do so amongst my friend circles. Its more like they come to me for financial decision making. Shortly I will be conducting lectures on investments at a class on a regular basis. This is all because I take keen interest in the capital markets. What would you suggest I do to leverage this interest in the stock markets?

6. If I score a 700 (which I think I can) does it make sense to apply for August 07 or should I wait till August 08. I really don’t want to hamper my realistic chance.

Actually the whole issue would be that I joined an IT company because I got placed through my Campus placements. So I didn’t have a chance to choose what job I wanted. So what I need to know is how I am going to convince the adcom that over due course of time I have developed a liking for Finance. The fact that I have gained considerable knowledge regarding Capital markets is through my own self-study, and if I am given an opportunity in the right environment I will outperform.

The most important point that I really want to know is regarding career shifts. I mean I need to have the confidence that (assuming I do well in my studies) post my MBA I will have a job that has something related to Finance, maybe not money management but something like corporate finance and the likes.

I would be really thankful if you could find time to answer these queries. Sorry the list kind of ran long.

Cheers,
Swanand

Hi Priyank,

Was out of station for some time ...Hope my thoughts still help u ....

1) I am going for NUS this Aug session . Cant afford the expensive US MBA
2) U made up ur mind get going with ur career - what do u mean .. u not joing any MBA universities this year ?
3) Yes ...exposure in any Indian MBA coll even in IIMs as a matter of fact isnt that great...all Engineers , all IT guys ... So its ur call vs a cheaper MBA vis a vis a highly expensive but quality driven MBA . If ur going for US B schools , please go for top 25 B Schools rest arent that great ... Indians in top US B school have to struggle a lot before
getting a job of their dreams ...

Hope that helps ....

Hi Maverick2k5,

Have tried posting this reply twice but have encountered server error...
Lets see if I am third time lucky..

1)Keep in mind that I havnt started my MBA yet ... starting in Aug06.
But from the feedback I have got from NUS/ohter coll stuents is that shifting from IT to Finance job of ur chioice is tough . U would end up getting a Business Analyst job in Finance firm but not sure if thats what u would interested in doing for the rest of ur life...
Even in ISB <-- coll known for career changers , ca drastic shift in IT to Finance is not all that easy ....

2) I too had less than 2 yrs exp when I had appleid in Dec 2005 . My exp befor I leave fro MBA would be 2 yr 1 mnths .. I guess same would be ur case too. So get a good GMAT scrore and apply in Dec 06 itself . Ensure ur GMAT score is good enough to neutralize ur less work ex weakness

3)I guess u would be pretty easily be able to convince ADCOM consider the extra curricular activites and ur intrest in Finance ....Just be urself . ADCOM is not all that crazy abt work ex

4) ADCOM is not all that crazy about ur IT backgrounds as well .In fact most of the Bangalore admits are IT ppl ... Just make sure u impress the ADCOM in general...

Hope that helped
