Hi Mukul, Tarun,

Thanks for taking out the time out of your hectic schedule. I appreciate it.

I took GMAT last week and scored an average 690. Here is my profile:

Work Experience - 6.8 yrs till date (International - around 3 yrs - USA and Jordan primarily)
Work-ex includes IT Project Management and Pre-Sales. Have been doing Project Management for last couple of years.
BE (80%), MBA (73%)
Star performer at workplace, received a few awards too, average extra-curricular activities.
No Social Service.

I've a hump that I'd work on my GMAT again. Anyways, what is your opinion on my candidature for PGPX?

Thanks,
Pramod.

Question Re: IIMA PGPX Queries - 03-08-2006, 01:35 AM

Hi Taruna and Mukul,

Great job you are doing out there! Taking time out for PGPX aspirants like me!

I am 50 plus (yes, you heard it right!) but still kicking well. Excellent accads plus value addition courses. Over 25 yrs experience in govt management, including 9 years in three foreign countries. Want to quit, get some real corporate world experience and perhaps open an institute. IIM-A prefered for branding and developing corporate networking.

GMAT (Dec 2005) is 44 V, 45 Q, 5.5 AWA, total 720

Will appreciate your advice to max the apping process.

Hi Rakesh,

I must say yours would be a different and very interesting profile. The current batch has two participants who are both 43. One has worked for no. of years with a FMCG giant and the other comes from Indian Army. Both of them add termendous value to class discussions and are as competitive as anyone else is. Prolly your SOP and commitment is what adcom might want to check when they review your candidature. This is just my guess !!!!.

Pramod and others,
I do not think I or Tarun can comment on any applicant's chances. I am sure you would have heard/read this everywhere but still will like to emphasizethat adcom looks into lots of different things in the candidate. GMAT is one such criteria. The avg. GMAT is 700 for the current but obviously there are some classmates who are below that figure.

All the best.

Cheers
Mukul

Hi Mukul

Thanks for your encouraging comments. The online application does not have any SOP! This and other essays would be asked from shortlisted candidates. I hope my age doesn't go against me in the shortlisting process. Will keep my fingers crossed and the forum informed!

Re: IIMA PGPX Queries - 03-08-2006, 08:31 PM

Vomc,

A few facts that I have gathered after joining the course and this might help others as well :

1. AFAIK, no course at IIMA except agri business gives a specific degree like PGDBM(marketing/fin). There are a range of electives one can choose from in every stream and do a specialisation. We will be taking up electives in 3rd and 5th terms. Some of our classes will be with PGP students. Other electives/courses have been specially designed for PGPX and these have focus on strategy and leadership - a requirement for anyone aspiring for middle-top management positions. A few other courses have been introduced for PGPX but are open for PGPs as well.
2. PGPX has a different orientation. A lot of our courses are taken by practioners and not academicians. Hence, quite a few guest faculty who are authority in their field. I can share details separately. Even the normal courses have lectures from people in the industry. But then this is normal at any B-school so nothing out of the ordinary.
3. Whatever I have gathered here, consult firms do not look for specific skill sets in a particular stream. Your previous work ex. and grades do matter. I can talk about this with more authority after march. .
4. What you will not get in a 1 year MBA is time to explore a particular subject in depth because of the rigor of the program. This again depends on personal choice and preferences. I am happy taking up diverse courses along with a few core ones related to my career aspirations.

Hope that helps.
Cheers
Mukul
