Re: IIMA PGPX Queries - 29-06-2008, 09:17 AM

Dear Cryonerve,

I have done a lot of reading through many threads in pagal, but this is my first post and a very deciding one too since a reply to this post would signal me a go or no go (though it is the same old profile check). I would like to target only for IIM-A (PGPX) / ISB, but not sure whether my profile would/can be good enough for one. If it is not a reasonable target then I don't want to waste my time and money by going further. So your expert comments about my profile and any suggestions for improvement are highly valued.

My profile in short:

> 29 yrs, 7 years work ex.
> 3 years in India (before PG), 2 Years in Taiwan (after PG: with the world's largest semiconductor foundry: TSMC), 2 Years in UK (as a technical lead managing around 10 guys), have on site international work experiences also - in dubai, singapore etc for around 1 month each.
> GMAT: 770/ 800
> 10th - 88.3 %
> 12th - 84.5 %
> B.Tech Computer Science & Engg - 73% (CET: College of Engg Thiruvananthapuram - had got admit to NIT Calicut also)
> M.Tech CSE - 7.3/10 (IIT Bombay)

> Have got above average records with the national and state level examinations. I will quote a few here.
# 39th rank (99.85 percentile) in All India GATE 2002 Computer Science for graduate admissions in India.
# 90th rank (99.75 percentile) in Kerala State Engineering Common Entrance Test CEE 1995.
# 99.8 %ile in the IQ test conducted by International High-IQ Community and is currently a member.
# 94th Rank in All India Management Entrance Test 2003 conducted by Symbiosis Center for Management & HRD, Pune.
# 130th Rank in National Talent Search Examination by United Council for Edu. Research & Scientific Learning, 1994.
# 126th Rank in All India M.Tech Entrance 2000 conducted by Indian Institute of Information Technology Bangalore.

> Have certifications in SCJP (90%), SCWCD (88%), SCBCD (82%), SCEA, MCP (94%), PMP, Typing speed (expert level: 90 wpm), Technical support expert etc.
> Have received "Best Performer award" from the company I working now and excellence certificate from DNATA, Emirates Airlines, Dubai.
> Have published a research paper in the area of Semiconductors and Image Processing.
> Extra curricular: Average with some competitions and prizes but never got involved with NGO's or community service.

Could you please share your views on how reasonable my targets are? I am particularly worried about my GPA part. I guess it is at the lower end(7.3) as for the names I have mentioned, but the fact that it is from a more competitive institute (IIT-B) would help? or would my varied international work exp. would help? or if it is too poor for the colleges I have mentioned above and cannot be compensated by anything else then please tell me frankly.

Thank you so much for your time...Expecting your earliest reply...

Best Regards
Anand

Whoa!!! Amazing profile. A profile to :2gunfire:kill :2gunfire:for

Arthur: You know,it's at times like this, when I'm trapped in a Vogon airlock with a man from Betelgeuse, and about to die of asphyxication in deep space that I really wish I'd listened to what my mother told me when I was young.
Ford Prefect: Why, what did she tell you?
Arthur: I don't know, I didn't listen

Re: IIMA PGPX Queries - 09-06-2009, 02:30 AM

Many Thanks for all valuble posts. It’s my first post in this forum as I just came across the right thread of topic.

My profile in short:

15 Years experience (13+ in the US) in IT
GMAT 710/5.5
US Citizen (Naturalized)
Extensive leadership experience in Middle Management (Leading Investment Bank)
Decent Grades in BSc MCA
Certifications: ITIL Expert, PMP & Oracle (Will have my Series 7 soon)

I am very interested in PGPx curriculum and would like to give all-out effort to join the elite school. Is the above profile sufficient for my application to be considered?

Appreciate any insights and comments.

Queries & Answers - 10-06-2009, 12:44 PM

Guys,

I have nos. of queries in my personal mail box. Due to scarcity of time (as we have PGPX IV first term exams going on), I am not in position to reply to individual's email but answering few of the general queries here:

Q: what is the GMAT score required for PGPX?

Ans: There is no official minimum cutoff. The better GMAT you have, the better is the chance to make into the interview shortlist. The avg. GMAT is 721.5 for PGPX 2009-2010. Lowest GMAT score (unofficial) is around 660 (for a person more than 18 yrs experience). For persons with IT background with 8 to 12 yrs work experience, the GMAT range can be 700- 780. However, GMAT is not the only criteria. The selection depends on lot of factors such as quality and quantity of experiences, past academic record, professional and personal achievements etc. The selection is also based on many subjective parameters.

My sincere Advice: As application process is online with no application fee, I will advise all the aspirants to apply irrespective of their GMAT score. However if you have time, please improve your GMAT score if it is low and you feel that you can improve it by August 10.

Q: Is there minimum work experience criteria for selection?

Ans: IIMA official says "Substantial work experience" and this is very subjective. The more work-exp you have, the more is the chance of selection. However, PGPX 2009-2010 has a participant with around 3.5 yrs of work-exp. However this guy has done masters from USA.

Q: Is there any written document to be submitted with application?

Ans: No

Q: Is there any recommendation to be submitted with application?

Ans: IIMA don't believe in process of falsified recommendations. No recommendation is required at any stage of admission process.

Q: How essays are to be submitted?

Ans: No essay is to be submitted at the time of application. Essays are only to be submitted by the short-listed candidates. You will have around 7 to 10 days for writing these essays.

Q: How to report GMAT score?

Ans. Just fill up your GMAT score in the application form with the reference (as asked in the application). However, GMAT score is required to be officially intimated by the GMAC to IIMA . You have to mention to Institute code of IIMA (more details in brochure)

Q. Education loan

Almost all banks provide loan facilities to PGPX students. This year most of the students have availed loan from SBI. SBI has one of its branch in the IIMA campus.

Q. Is is worth to spend 20 Lacs (including IIP & other expenses) on PGPX?

There is no clear answer. It all depends on your passion for the formal education. If you feel, you are doing great in your profession/personal life and assured of your long termcareer prospects, for that, you don't require a costly education at all.

Q: What is the impact of recession on Placements?

Placement, particularly the opportunities and salary packages are function of health of economy. In bad economy, placements also suffers (not only IIMA's PGPX but also IVY leagues mbas). However, one has to keep his long term aspiration in mind while making decision.

Q: Which course is more suitable for me (IIMA vs IIMB vs IIMC vs ISB vs HBS vs Wharton vs LBS vs..................)?

Ans: Very difficult to answer. One should not compare Indian institutes with foreign institutes. The decision is to be taken keeping in view of the demography, you are looking for (from your career perspective) and cost and return on the investment on MBA. Indian institutes are best if one wishes to make a career in Indian perspectives. Among Indian executive MBAs, Best institute and program is anybody's guess.

All the best.
