Depends which MSF program is s/he planning to take. And Why.
MSF is definitely more of a "deep dive" into the realm of Academic Finance as compared with the MBA and hence, the theory that the MSF would be a "hotter" qual to have as compared to an MBA (if you are hunting for a job in anything which picks up on a MBA with a Finance major) is not unfounded.
Again, MSF is academicaly inclined than a more vocational MBA.
Realisticaly speaking, with a 640 in GMAT and 5 years of retail experience--- you should look at a reason for doing the MBA or the MSF:: and compare that with trying to improve the GMAT score - improving it --applying to a T20 college and hoping for a better (more lucrative placement)--or applying for a higher scholarship at SUNY-- this also would be a better ROI.
Also note that your GMAT scores would be on your resume while you look at a placement post qual. ...... my advise would be to try and improve the 640.
MBA v/a MSF
If your experience has been in retailing Financial Instruments (either courses are a good option as they help you build up on the your chosen industry-- you already have the hands on experience) but if you have been selling Dialysis Filters for the past 5 years -- you may want to consider MBA because the MSF would mean that you start at the bottom of the heirarchy once again.
Again, most of us are looking at an MBA to change our career streams-- ITES to Financial Analytics or ITES to Retail--- MBA is more popular as it feeds both job markets.
And, in my opinion, at present at least the MBA is a more popular option hence there would be lesser competition for the MSF admits (as long as the courses are offered at the same or similar schools).

PS.... I have been a huge fan of specialising in a specific field--post MBBS an MS post MS an MCh---- post MCh; hours of say, cardiothoracic surgery--- post that the number of cardiac by-pass procedures;;;; this is what defines a profession and a professional.
PPS... in case your friend has been looking at the Post Grad Qual in Finance ask him/her to look at the MFE offered by Haas at UC Berkley

Have been selected for MBA from SUNY Buffalo and waiting for the final decision from Katz school.
Should I drop the idea of MBA for MS in Finance (as sm of my frn's r giving me ideas that MS in finance is goin to surpass MBA very soon.) ROI is really good. |
