Re: Phoren B-school Assistance Desk - 02-11-2007, 03:28 PM

Guys,

I have a general question.

How much different is 700 from 690 and 710 from 700?
I mean is 700 a much better score than 690?
Or a 10-mark difference doesnt isnt a great deal.

Have been thinking about it for quite long now.

Thanks in Advance.
Regards,
Maunang

This is how recruitment generally works in Europe:
  • Companies come to the campus to make presentations about themselves and about the profiles they offer
  • They invite you to apply to them (mostly online). Application usually consists of resume and cover letter. Cover letter is tricky because it should show your genuine interest in the company. This requires some in-depth research of the company
  • If your application is selected, you are invited for interviews. There are several rounds out of which the final round usually happens in the company office with people whom you might work with should you get selected
This is totally different from how it works in India where entire recruitment process takes only 3-4 days.

Problem for Indians:
The main problem is language. English is not the main business language in Europe. Local language dominates in every country; so it becomes difficult to work in positions which require interaction with people outside the company (mostly for consulting and some areas of Investment Banking)

The second problem is non-EU status. A company has to go through a lengthy legal process to recruit a non-EU person for a european position. Not all companies are willing to do this

The best way to proceed on this is to contact current Indian students in the schools and ask them about the scene in their respective schools
thanks itsrahul. I will get in touch with current students at the school.

Hi Puys
I am a bit confused on which b-schools to apply..although have shortlisted some ..but need some more opinion...my profile is as below

10th- 86%
12th- 88%
Btech IITD- 8/10
GMAT- 720( 50, 36) AWA - 5/6
extra curricular- goods..have been actively involved in sports...college & school
have various academic & sports awards to boast of
work ex- 3 yr by fall 2k8- 2 yr in fmcg & 1 yr as consultant...

i am mainly targetting the following..
ISB- to remain in india & break into management consulting
NUS- Singapore as a place to work is an attraction, schol opportunity & safe school
Michighan- Ross- US of A & top b-school in the world..gud curiculum ...however if i dont get the schol might not consider it...

In case i dont get through..next yr i wil taret the following,..
INSEAD- my dream school to break into consulting & work in europe...aint applying this yr becoz i feel to young with 2.5-3 yr work-ex
Chicago GSB- Same reason as Ross..
Will also do some research & target a top 20 b-school where in have a chance of good schol (50% to 100% of tution)....

However personally i want to do an international MBA...in europe or US...but also want to return to INDIA ( & hence ISB a choice) ASAP..within 2 yrs of completing MBA...

Can anyone please guide me as to how can i fulfill my international aspirations , get a good brand name & return to india within 4-5 years of going out...i know this is a wish list..but do let me know the trade-offs considering my profile...

thanks

a very convenient way of doing this is by getting into ISB, doing well and opting for the international exchange. 3 months of international exposure aint that bad. plus u can then work in india/abroad without many compromises.

think out of the box!! cheers!

thanks for the same..the only problem is tht exchange is genrally during the placement week in ISB...& also expenses for europe or US are substantial...

so the thought of chucking the placements & taking an additional burden of 3-4 Lakhs on top of 15 L is not a very appealing one..

and btw its even more difficult if you have an indian salary to pay this enormous debt..

this is my opinion & basis feedback from students of ISB when in visited in Jan...in case there are any different exp...please share the same...

actually my friend finished his mba from isb this year and he told me about this. He seemed pretty alrite with the idea. he is on an indian salary and is pretty happy with it. but i guess it could matter, though im not sure how much. being at a place like wharton even for 1 month would be great, i guess!! its ur call at the end of the day.

Can I get any PDF document which specifies the top ranked MBA colleges in the world ? I guess Business Week releases one such ranking, but apart from that, any other such authentic sources ?
