MBA in Australia. Should I should I not? - 27-04-2006, 10:49 AM

Hi I completed my BA(Hons) in Business Administration in 2001, from Leicester Business School, UK, with a first class hons. degree.
I secured admission in Manchester Business School U.K, and the London School of Economics UK for an MSc in Finance. I always wanted to go into the Investment Banking Field.

Due to certain family pressures I had to skip doing my Masters anad came back to India and joined my family business which is distribution of Autombile Spare Parts and Lubricants all over North India.

I am now 27yrs of Age, married and have a 2 yr old son. I now feel I want a more exciting career and do what I always wanted to do. I am considering doing an MBA in a good school in Australia (Primarily because of Lower Costs). I have the following concerns/queries:

1. Which are the best business schools in Australia( I am considering Melbourne Business School, Australian Graduate School of Management)?

2. Job prospects in Australia in the Finance Sector? Do good Investment Banks recruit from these business schools? Have any Indian Students made it to these Banks through these B-Schools? What about Visa and work permit norms?

3. I will be 29yrs of age when I graduate, with no particular experience in the Finance field? So how employable will I be?

4. Is considering an MBA from UK or US a better option(considering the costs involved)?

I hope someone can help me with this.

Raj

Hi Mushtandaa,

WoW!!!!! finally I meet someone with a profile similar to mine. I completed my computer engg in 2001 but had to join my famil business... got married but no kids. Will be going for my MBA at SPJAIN Singapore campus( CAT 97.88%)wifes going for her at Deakin university, Melbourne.

As for MBA in Australia.....
MBS and AGSM are great schools but for people ith our profile I would say difficult to get in.

You can try for Monash, BGSB, Deakin good schools and you will get through.

I would also suggest you to have a look at these schools
Hong kong university of tech, hong kong business schools, nanyang, NUS(singapore), Asian institute of management studies(Manila), CEIBS(china) these scools are great and I guess would offer you better employment opportunities then Australia.

As you have one year in hand I would suggest you do some diploma in Finance as it would strengthen your application. Try out for Great Lakes Inst and if you think you can crack GMAT go for IIM Pgpx, ISB, XLRI(SINGAPORE), IMT(DUBAI).

Thats it from me
Piyush

Jobs are not available after MBA in Australia, If you are in lucky 25% then you may get job which is relavant to your qualifacation. His most of friends are working as a team leader in call centers. Non.GMAT institutes are big risk. If you want to know more you can PM me..I will give his contact infomation and he will guide you properly.

I think firstlly before choosing an MBA anywhere in the world, we need to be certain of the following things:

1.Why choose a particular school?
2.Is it giving the diversity you are after?
3.Is the school good for networking?
4.Does the faculty have enough exposure?
5.Which faculty (finance, Mktg, Operations etc) is good?
6.Does it offer good Overseas exchange programs with Ivy League Schools?
7.Lastly placements.

I have just got myself into Melbourne Business School, Australia. It has a very strong faculty, good opportuntiy for networking.

At the end of the day we get placed better, if our networking is strong.

I have to stress that my work experience of Seven(7) years really helped.

Guys if anyone need any assistane, please do not hesitate to ping me.

Re: Anyone for MBA in Australia? - 06-05-2006, 12:28 PM

Well.. I went to IDP in Delhi, and they said they dont "deal" in University of Melbourne and AGSM! I would have to apply to these schools on my own, and they will not even help me with VISA formalities if I apply to any school in which they dont deal in!!!

There there was this "irritating" female who refused to understand the situation and told me to just randomly apply to Macquarie, Monash and Woollongong! She had the notion that AGSM and MBS (she had never heard of both) or any other school in Australia do not require any GMAT scores.

Well I met her superioir Amit who was of a little more help and was very clear that they could not help me with securing an admission in AGSM or MBS coz they dont "listen to anybody". He also suggested a two years Masters course in Finance for me in University of Melbourne, and said that the chances for employment were far better then doing an MBA from there.

Well on second thought I believe the course he suggested is a good one and the curriculum was quite good. The course is also quite expensive AUS $ 24,000/- P.A for 2 years. Its as expensive as an MBA from AGSM and MBS.

Well what is your take on this? Is a Masters Course in Finance better? What kind of a wieghtage the degree would carry in Australia, or other parts of Asia Pcific and India?

(1) ROI is great as investment is far less. If you get some kind of on-campus job it would work out to around 12lakhs or so.

(2) Brand recognition is good all over including Europe and Americas. Obviously no one is comparing it to a M7 here

(3) Best part is at the end of it you should be getting a PR for sure: http://www.workpermit.com/australia/...calculator.htm

(4) Worst case scenari, you always can apply for a HSMP in the UK:
http://www.workpermit.com/uk/hsmp/mba_provision

(5) Sydney and Melbourne are one of the best places to stay in the world. Heck 2 years of unbridled beer drinking looks as enticing as the cultural diversity.

(6) If all this weren't enough - your spouse can stay with you on a dependent visa AND work full-time.

Pheew.............tell me what beats such a list ?

Arun

hi
i have a question on PR. It seems they offer points for job-ex if it is relevant to the course. will my 3 years IT experience be considered if i do mba in finance? i want to apply to melbourne business school for sept-2007 batch. since it is a 20 month course (not 2 years).. i was wondering if i will get PR by june-2009??
