hmmm... not really zeus.. they want some experience..mebbe a year or so....well, when they say, managerial... its not like... a lead or.. project manager.. or.. something!! u can project ur experience to make it look like one which calls for lot of quick decision making... lots of responsibility... blah blah....& frankly... here comes the art of writing than actual work ex...

... nope ... i really dont think so.... u can do a lil research on this... look, last year.. had some time on hand.. ... so, had applied to about 12 colleges in UK... got admitted to all....except one...Lancaster ... they clearly said..i need 2 more yrs of work ex.... but all others accepted me for MBA though i am a techie... so, as i said.. it all depends on the kind of essays u write & the recos u produce (my recos... were written by urs truly.. .. my prof had to sign on them after he went thro' the dictionary... )....

Ya... zeus.. every year there is this exhibition of UK universities.... santosh.. do u have them in mumbai??? u can get to talk to a lot of college representatives there & also.. there are a lot of counsellors around.. they will do all ur processing for free of cost... ya.. compared to US, thats an advantage.. the application blah blah doesnt cost u a pie... but hell yes.. loads of time & effort!!!

thats it for now i guess.. santosh can give u complete info... & correct me if i am wrong.. so, til then.. tata

Re: (UN)Official UK MBA thread - 11-09-2003, 02:29 PM

Hi there,

Simba's reply is near perfect. Though I would like to ad few more points to it.

There is an organisation body in UK called Association of MBA (http://www.mba.org.uk) this works as accredition body for the MBA courses mainly in UK.

If a university is accridiated by AMBA that means it will have some minimum yardsticks. First and important among them is the work experience part. Yes... Zeus... you are right in what you have heard. Most of the top business schools will not look into your application if you do not possess the requisite managerial work experience. Please be informed that MBA in international market especially UK is rather post experience course. People work for 5-6 years and then come back to do MBA. AMBA also have this minimum age limit of 24 years also.

I agree with Simba regarding the work experience but not exactly in same light. Important thing is not what is the title you have got. Important thing is what was the responsibility you were shouldering whle on the job. The managerial experience does not mean experience as a Project manager or so. It means any experience where you are responsible in managing team of people, leading them, may it be sales, IT company and all. The professional experience of a software developer is not a managerial experience. Team leaders experience is an Managerial Experience. Me Myself portrayed my korean experience as Team Leader in an IT company as managerial experience.

Yes the consultants like Study Overseas ltd, chopra consultants and all will not charge you penny for applying. You can always push your luck and see. but my sincere advise is do the research on your own. try to find out about the university and most importantly *COURSE_CONTENT*. If this suits you then you can go ahead. there is alot more things to be done... and lots of reserach.

If i have to suggest any one... i will suggest look for AMBA accrediation as well as RAE and TQA rankings. They are the government agencies which monitors the quality of the university and give rating accordingly.

All the best.

Do let me know if you guys need any specific information.. will be glad to provide the same.

hey Simba... which universities you got admission into?

Cheers
Santosh

Well right now i am at oxford brookes in UK. Its really great here. Something I never experienced. The sophasticated system of working, Capitalising the IT Advantage to the maximum, use of communication at the best.

This is my week 0 and it is supposed to be a week where we get familiar with whole campus, library, facilities available and of course course. Just got my timetable and there goes my plan of using my vacation for travel

This evening we will be leaving for a place 100 miles north of oxford where we will have meetings and some case studies. In formal words... the induction continues.

Last year Oxford brookes didnt have AMBA accredition thats why the fees was 9500 or something. In november 2002 Oxford Brookes got AMBA accredition and that was the excuse they had for increasing the fees to 12300 GBP

Leeds was the better choice i believe from your list of schools.

Cheers

Hey Santosh,

Congrats yaar! I hope you must be enjoying yourself.

Even i was planning to apply for an MBA at UK, if I dun get through IIMs. So wud u mind telling me abt the following institutes... University if Aberdeen, University of Southampton and CArdiff University. I have been going through the "Times Good University Guide" and these universities were placed at 20, 28 and 25 respectively. Although Southampton's website claims its department to be among UKs top ten Business Departments

Hope you could give me some insight into that!!!!

ciao
