Wink MBA Abroad: Go Single/Married; settle abroad/return back. - 11-02-2006, 08:07 PM

Hey guys,
This site has been of great help for me AFA technical stuff is concerned. I would really be thankful to you guys if you can help me solve this dilemma. Thing is I am 26, BE, Working as a software engineer. Total Work Ex. 4+ yrs.
Now the thing is that I plan to take GMAT and fly US for quality MBA degree by this year end. Now my biggest confusions being:-
.) Does it make any difference if i marry now, as its going to be an arranged marriage and though there is a pressure from parents but i guess i can postpone it if it creates any probs/hassles in my MBA.
.) Does it make sense to do MBA there and work for a couple of years and return back to India because I dont want/Cant settle abroad.
What would you suggest people? And mate, I am ambitious and have got a kind of desire to do MBA, that has always been in my mind so to drop the idea to do MBA is out of question.

Mr. GHz (assuming you are male):

No responses yet so thought I'd chime in.

You have to determine the place of your wife in your scheme of things. From your post it seems she's right up there, just after the action flick on AXN. Not unusual for a 26 yr old, "ambitious" male but you would do well to maintain balance in your life - the yin and yang theory (Mr. Miyagi -RiP).

Abt your questions:
Now the thing is that I plan to take GMAT and fly US for quality MBA degree by this year end.

Not sure which course you have in mind - spring entry?
Now my biggest confusions being:-
.) Does it make any difference if i marry now, as its going to be an arranged marriage and though there is a pressure from parents but i guess i can postpone it if it creates any probs/hassles in my MBA.

MBA immediately after marriage especially an arranged is going to be tough on your significant (?) other.

.) Does it make sense to do MBA there and work for a couple of years and return back to India because I dont want/Cant settle abroad.

Very few return, almost none within 2 yrs - cant get back your investment in a short span of time.

There are many programs in India or close by, where your opportunity cost will be low.

All the best!

Hey %mba05%,
thanks for replying dude; yup me a (ambitious) male, and well my intend was to know why do ppl do MBA from abroad is it the education quality or is it that peculiar phirang-prem of indians?
Mate, i tell you I wanna do MBA juzz coz I am convinced that I can not reach to tat top level with my B,Tech. degree (from an ordinary college). You cant prove me wrong, can you?
And when it comes to MBA I guess US is the best and the only thing i am not sure about the duration that i gotta stay in US to earn back my investments, assuming i dont get any financial aid.
Any idea?

Again, would appreciate any help.

GHZ

Hi Mate,

Posting 1st time on a GMAT forum..actually have been a CAT aspi since past 2 yrs with no success so far. So giving GMAT some serious thought. well as far as the reasons for doing ur MBA from abroad goes..its different for diff people..Generally those who already have 4-5+ yrs work exp in India and still have that fire in their belly, go for it. coz for them except for IIM A,B,C,L and prob XLRI other instis just don't make sense..I m not even sure of these instis..thn thr r ppl like me..who want to do MBA very badly but just cudn't make it into the top Indian B-schools even after repeated attempts, considering the mindless game which CAT is getting by every passing yr.Then thr r ppl who simply say that let the 'strivers' slog for CAT, we will take the easier route thru GMAT coz our dad has the moolah to sponsor me.
These I m telling for MBA from abroad in general and not just US. There r really great options in SE Asia like AIM, Manila and NUS whose returns r as good as any US B-school with much less investment..so the ROI is much better in their case + no visa hassles which u will have to worry about in US..if u can't get ur H1 processed within a yr or 6 months (i don't remember) of completing ur MBA then u will have to pack ur bags.
Now regarding the duration which u have to stay in US to recover ur investment..one of my friends did some maths on that, the details of which I don't remember, but he arrived at a figure of around 5-6 yrs.
Last but not the least, getting into Ivy League schools is I guess next to impossible unless u r going for double MBA (with already a PGDBM from IIM-A in most of the cases), or u r a CA with some hardcore 6-7 banking/ finance exp.

These were my 2 cents on the subject.
Hope it helps

Hey
thanks man. Well one more thing, when i return back to india, how are my job chances. If one do MBA from say, one of the top-20 B-schools (all over) and with a couple of years of work-ex abroad and try to get a job in India, how practical it is and what are the pros and cons?
I may be sounding very nerdy but that matters in my making the decisions

GHz Let me throw another twist:
if you are an Engineer and are planning on an MBA abroad (after correcting your prespective about the admission rounds' schedule ) you would end up commiting a definitive amount of money to the academic fees and would need to work on a USD Sallary to pay back the loan --

1_assuming you are taking a loan for a US MBA and plan to work in India you would extend your break even point by at least 5 years.
2_US/Europe would be a new world for both yourself and your spouse-- the problems in assimilating to a new work-culture (assuming you have not worked on a US assignment ) would take some time and some difficulty.
3_if Mrs GHz is working ... it would be a shame to have her quit and relocate to start at the bottom of the heirarchy chain in the US

In light of all of the above I vote for a Indian executive MBA--post your GMAT (ISB/IIMA_PGPX/IIMC_PGPEX)

All views my own...expressed with reference to the context of the impending pre MBA entrance interview.

I don't think going abroad is the easier route. It's a matter of choice. Just because 200,000 people take CAT every year doesn't make it the best choice. For me coming to the US was to get out of the herd mentality and I am glad I did it. Was it easy? Not at all!

Since you are planning to do an MBA abroad, my advise to you is stop stereotyping people. You will face a lot of trouble once you get here!!!
