Hi Mate,
Posting 1st time on a GMAT forum..actually have been a CAT aspi since past 2 yrs with no success so far. So giving GMAT some serious thought. well as far as the reasons for doing ur MBA from abroad goes..its different for diff people..Generally those who already have 4-5+ yrs work exp in India and still have that fire in their belly, go for it. coz for them except for IIM A,B,C,L and prob XLRI other instis just don't make sense..I m not even sure of these instis..thn thr r ppl like me..who want to do MBA very badly but just cudn't make it into the top Indian B-schools even after repeated attempts, considering the mindless game which CAT is getting by every passing yr.Then thr r ppl who simply say that let the 'strivers' slog for CAT, we will take the easier route thru GMAT coz our dad has the moolah to sponsor me.
These I m telling for MBA from abroad in general and not just US. There r really great options in SE Asia like AIM, Manila and NUS whose returns r as good as any US B-school with much less investment..so the ROI is much better in their case + no visa hassles which u will have to worry about in US..if u can't get ur H1 processed within a yr or 6 months (i don't remember) of completing ur MBA then u will have to pack ur bags.
Now regarding the duration which u have to stay in US to recover ur investment..one of my friends did some maths on that, the details of which I don't remember, but he arrived at a figure of around 5-6 yrs.
Last but not the least, getting into Ivy League schools is I guess next to impossible unless u r going for double MBA (with already a PGDBM from IIM-A in most of the cases), or u r a CA with some hardcore 6-7 banking/ finance exp.

These were my 2 cents on the subject.
Hope it helps
