Re: Admitted : Rotman business School,Toronto - 22-06-2006, 08:24 PM

Hi All,

I am intersted in specializing in FIN - IB and hence wanted to know about Rotman. Heard it is a very good skool for Fin but a few specific questions.

1. How does it compare to the US, Can one work in US after a degree from Rotman.
2. What about the job scene in Canada
3. Where does it compare to the US B skools known for FIN (H/S/W)

Cheers
Sumit

Sumit - Rotman is a top 10 global school in Finance and its very well known in that field.

1. Its equivalent to a top 15-20 US school and its rep is very good, although in US it is not that known bcos there are plenty of schools there too. One needs a H1 to work in US which can be quite tough to get even if you graduate from schools ranked beyond top 15-20.

2. Job scene is currently booming in Canada - the advantage intl students have in Canada is that one can get work authorization, PR (Canadian equivalent of a green card) by the end of graduation, so getting jobs without sponsorship (as in H1) is easy. But of course, the market in Canada is limited to Toronto, which is still the 3rd biggest financial hub in North America...compared to that, US market is much bigger.

3. H/S/W are in a different league altogether, but at the same time Chicago,NYU, Wharton are the top 3 finance schools

Below are top 10 global schools in Finance, quoted by Financial Times

Best in finance**
University of Chicago GSB
University of Pennsylvania: Wharton
New York University: Stern
University of Rochester: Simon
Columbia Business School
Coppead
London Business School
Rice University: Jones
University of Toronto: Rotman
MIT: Sloan

Puhrince,

Thanks for your response. I would like to know if it is possible to stidy in Rotman and finally find a job in NY, as that is the Fin(IB) Hub.

If it is not possible directly after an MBA, is it possible lets say after 2-3 yrs of work exp in Toronto.

Also, are the Salary scales diff in Canada and US ?

Cheers
Sumit

Re: Admitted : Rotman business School,Toronto - 26-06-2006, 09:33 PM

hi everyone.

i got thru rotman this year but decided not to join it. not because its bad...it still is in my top 3 choices....but because of somewhat sad job scene in canedda.

actually the canadian economy is on a downer these days so the salaries arent that great especially fr people wid lesser wrk ex...1-2 yrs types. finding jobs aint a piece of cake and do not expect a super-size lifestyle even after d prized job. now us is always a possibility and if u can become a sitara out there in rotman then u can reach us and buy a cadillac after 2 years.!.

i got this info from a friend of mine..engineer .. iim-c grad. he is currently working in a bank and his contacts there...including some ppl from rotman... have mentioned this.

also the salaries in canada are comparatively lesser than those in us .. i would guess about 2/3rd.

all said...ill still apply to rotman this year...wid an extra year of work ex ...i hope i can get some schol mebbe and my ROI will be decent.

cheers. ats

yes definitely...Rotman alumni have a very strong base in NYC and especially bcos of their Finance rep.

The main criterion for working in US, whether you graduate frm US or elsewhere is to get a work visa (H1)..its easy for students doing Masters in Engg or other sciences but much tougher for MBA grads unless ur from a top 15 US school. But the good things is that top IB or MC firms are willing to sponsor H1's..so say if you went to a IB in Toronto, maybe after 2-3 years, someone in NYC will be willing to sponsor your H1.

Salaries are definitely lesser in Canada but ! a lot of people forget to note the fact that the lifestyle is very different there - all your medical expenses are taken care of, there is awesome public transportation in Toronto as compared to US where one has to buy a car..longer working hours in US too..so its a balance of life you will have to decide upon..now salaries are lesser in India (in terms of USD) isn't it? but one can live a great life on that salary correct? same with Canada.

ats - not sure if you read my earlier posts but what you have said is contrary to whats happening in Canada..i have lived in the US for 8 years and right across the Canadian border in Detroit...trust me, its a great time in Toronto area right now (forget the rest of Canada)...plus I have worked for GM (which makes Cadillacs), so thanks for mentioning the brand! : )

salaries are like $10k less in Canada for an equivalent job in US but as I said in my earlier post, you get other benefits attached to it..living in NYC costs higher than any other city in the world, so of course one has to be compensated for it..a 1bdr apt in NYC costs 4 times of what I am paying in Detroit, so if i moved to NYC, I would definitely ask for a higher salary for the same job.

but all this said, I would advise anyone to choose a school based on their interests and choices rather than thinking about money first...eventually even people in Toronto make $350K after a few years of work exp if ur ok with starting off at a lower salary.

Puhrince,

I am not sure who is correct between you and ATS on the Canada job scene but i definitely agree that if you pursue your goals, eventually money will come.

ATS,

You seem to be one of those with a low work exp, what was ur profile like to get you into Rotman. Also are you interested in IB or other aspects of FIN....

Is it easy to get into Rotman with a low work exp as compared to a US top 15.

yep - people work everywhere from Europe to Australia and can command salaries based on work exp...of course the opps in US aren't found anywhere else but if one can't work bcos of work visa probs, one should be open and willing to go elsewhere.

One can get into US/UK/Canadian schools with 2 years of work exp - same with Rotman..only difference I noticed is that a lot of US schools tend to lean more heavily on higher GMAT scores as compared to abroad e.g. London Business School.

hmmm....

mebbe im not rite...mebbe puhrince is more correct. my info was based on my friend's observations..while puhrince seems to have first hand knowledge. But i still say that canadian salaries are upto 30 percent lesser than those in the us... but off course the cost of living and quality of life offsets the imbalance etc. thats why me gonna apply 2 it again this year.

sumit. yeah...i just had 6 months of exp when i applied and would have had 1 yr at the time of joining. thats why me gonna apply again...coz by next year sept...ill have two years of work ex. so mebbe ill have a better shot at a scholarship.

im sure the canadian b-schools are less fussy about work ex when compared to the top us schools. this is because the dudes wid better work ex invariably choose us schools. so its like the BEGGARS ARE NOT CHOOSERS situation for rotman (though the statement sounds a bit harsh). if u have a high gmat..read 730+ then the chances are that wid a 2 yrs work ex ..ull easily make it to rotman. provided u can give em some sauced up account of ur college life

::me not into finance at all. ib sounds good but i doubt if i can slog out enuff fr that.

Re: Admitted : Rotman business School,Toronto - 29-06-2006, 09:02 PM

hey I am not completely right either unless I move to Toronto and see for myself. At the same time, salary differentials also depend on the job field you are in..my wife, who has currently started a job search in Toronto, is getting the same salary offers there as well (she is in part banking, part finance, part IT)..so this bodes well for us.

Regd work exp, beyond the top 10-15 US schools, they are also not that particular about the 4-5yr work exp (in most good schools) if you have a solid gmat score...so its just not Canadian b-schools...i have seen quite a few get into Emory, UT Austin, which are ranked usually between 15-20 (Rotman is equivalent to them in raknings) with 2 yrs work exp... ATS, at the same time my only advice to you (assuming you don't join top 15 US schools) is to gain a couple of years more work exp. - not for admissions, but to land the job you want post graduation..its one factor a lot of companies, be it in Canada or US, value a lot especially for international students.
