ICMA Centre UK: How is the institute for an Msc in Finance - 27-01-2006, 04:51 PM

Hi,
I have been working in Citigroup for the past two years. I want to take a break from working and do a very specialised one year course in finance.

Someone told me about this MSC in International Securities, Investment and Banking course in the ICMA centre, UK. ICMA is the regulatory body for all investment banks in Europe and this school has been funded by them.

I went to the website and the course content, faculty, placements and the infrastructure looks top notch. The school even has a fully loaded trading room and awards around 20 scholarships annually. Would anyone know of any alumni from that institute so that I can get more info on the same.

thanks

Hi ,

This is Riju. I did my Msc in International Securities Investment and Banking from the ICMA centre in 1999. As you righty said, the institute is top notch in terms of faculty, international participants, placements and the infra. It is situated in Reading which is 30 min from London Paddington. You will get a lot of info on www.icmacentre.rdg.ac.uk

I was working for a private equity firm after my MSc. After that I was with Barclays Capital in their Derivatives structuring and sales team .

I am a very proactive ambassador of ICMA centre and would be more then happy to answer any questions.Do call me at 09312238020.

Take care

hello frd
i have also done a lit bit of research on icma center.
but what i have found is that its is a grt university and it is funded by icma.
but still the university has not gained popularity among uk employers. i mean to say no big banks recruits its students on campus.
then what i have concluded is that if u want to come back to india ,then icma is a grt university to go for ib but if u want to live in uk and work there then i feel it would be very tough and the changes are 10/100 of u geeting a good job.
so be prepared and see what u career goals are and plan accordingly

and remember i have also a student like u,so just dont accept my perceptions. but ask some more ppl who are there in the market and better u have done there msc from uk and isma.

hope it helps
any more query post it!!!!!!!will try to help u .

sameer kapadia.

Hi I am new to the thread.
I got admit from ICMA centre. .. have applied to few more and waiting for their response .. The course at the university looks really good. dunno abt its popularity in UK banks but guess must be good as it is one of the few centres in UK offering this course. Still would like to have comments from experts.

I'm a 06 master's student at ICMA

The school has a very "good marketing"
that makes itself so attractive but the
education here, is in fact, not as good as most people expected and design of course contents are much much worse than my undergrad program in the US.

DON"T BE FOOLed by its MARKETING

Most importantly, half of students is just rich kids without decent academic
background at the first place!

I also heard that last year, NONE of graduting undergrad students passed the CFA level I and 90% of them is from China. You don't see many good students from China here in ICMA centere.

what disappoint me is that there is no Interaction between student and professor in the class!

In my conclusion, if you are a top student,
choose either top 5 schools in the UK or top 50 schools in the US.

Hi Irving,

I am a prospective ICMA candidate for 2006. In the post are you talking about the MSc ISIB? From what I understand, this corse is known world wide by recruiters and definitely well known by banks in the UK if not in the entire Europe.
Could you give us some stats for placement from your batch
It would be of much help!

Thanks
Maverick

Msc in investment management from ICMA center has been approved as a program partner with CFA institute, whereby u cover CFA level 1.
Am concerned about Msc in International Securities, Investment and Banking course, as am confused between an MBA & the above mentioned program.

Hi Daniel,

Cass is one of the best B schools in UK and also one of the fastest growing in reputation. One of the best things about Cass is it is situated in london right next to the financial center. Cass is especially famous for its Finance department which should be certainly among the top 6 in UK, Cass itself should be among the top 10 B Schools in UK. You might also want to consider other schools like Warwick, LSE etc.

I myself am applying to Cass and a few others for Masters in Finance. Let us know what you decide.

Regards
