Do you have any other apps to US schools lined up?
Iowa will offer limited opportunities, compared to top schools. As the b-school app process has just revealed the competition in the US is no pushover. Post MBA you will lock horns with the grads from top schools. The location, as you know isn't too hot either. While Chicago is closeby, dont forget that there are two heavyweights in the vicinity - Chicago and Kellogg. If the toss up is between NUS and Iowa, I'd choose Iowa.

Look at the course content, class profile, employment prospects and your lifestyle during the two years.

all the best...
thanks for your valuable inputs...I guess certain jobs are available for the Tier II schools as well, mostly in the regional orgs...Iowa places students across midwest, which, they say, is an exciting location...I guess the bigger challenge would be to search and then network and secure jobs with F1 friendly orgs...I am sure most orgs will settle for a citizen belonging to Tier II college (if the citizen is a strong candidate) rather than considering a F1 student from a Tier I college...It all depends on the economy and the market demand at that point of time...

hey mba05,

Considering Iowa's ranking is a bit higher than Minnesota at minneapolis, would u suggest Minnesota ahead of Iowa? Cos u ppl have been mentioning chicago and minneapolis being close to Iowa. I have applied to both with a core concentration in entrepreneurship.

Sorry for butting in but why are guys in this thread heading/biullish on Iowa?
Think VERY carefully on going to 2nd/3rd tier schools like Iowa/Minnesota.
In my humble opinion these are the cons
1) Iowa/Minnesota is middle of nowhere
2) Chicago is 300 miles away from Iowa. Chicago has 2 great b-schools Kellogg and Chicago. So a fresh Kellog or Chicago may well be boss/get a better deal than a bloke from iowa.
3) Minnesotta in incredibly racist. (something I have heard.) No one goes there if you final goal is Bay area/NY/Boston/Chicago. I know a fellow who attended a MBA fair in B'lore. He met the Minnesota rep and was told that placements for non-us fellas are real bad in Twin cities.
4) Both areas very conservative/right wing

the most important DRAWBACK

5) Tough to get international to get jobs. Small companies recruit there who are not interested in sponsoring H1s.

I would ask Indians to not consider going to Iowa/Minnesota if they plan on working in US. it will be hard to get a job and school would not help you out.

Any queries (I did research on mostl top 30-40 schools) please feel free to ask.

Hey Senapati,
thanks a lot dude...I guess I am in deep shit now...I have only applied into IInd/IIIrd tier schools in spite of having 7yrs of experience in software(with just 1 yr in the US...I am a tech lead) and 720 GMAT...I applied with no significant research on the schools (I spent 3 months in total on GMAT prep and school research) apart from making sure that I get a schol into whichever I apply...
I met an Indian student at the MBA fair who was also a teaching assistant at Iowa...he seemed quite upbeat about Iowa(may be because he is a student there himself) and told that everyone at Iowa gets an internship and can cover up for most of the second year expenses...
What is your opinion on schools down south like Georgia Terry and Tamu ?

Hi Puneeth,

Please refer to the postings in this thread by confirmist and myself. U'll find lots of questions. Mine was mostly situation-based like Describe a situation where u have said no to someone?
Describe a situation where u have shown initiative?
Describe a situation where u have shown leadership capabilities?

I gave all my answers in prompt with whatever came to my mind. I advise you to go thru the Tippie site and sit for the interview with a fresh mind. Best of luck..keep in touch and post ur profile.

Thanks
Mayukh

Re: Admitted to IOWA - 23-02-2006, 05:12 PM

Hey Chandler,
Getting internship is not an issue . Lots of b-schools have 95%+ interships. Issue is getting jobs in US AFTER b-school. Iowa is cheaper than top b-schools no doubt. But job prospects in US are LOW.No student says his b-school is bad even if he knows deficiencies of the school.
About 2 schools u raised
Georgia - Terry is better not because of ranking but it's near Atlanta (a high-tech center). Not a bad school if you wanna stay in IT.
TAMU -> 4th ranked college in Texas (after UT,Rice,SMU) again low cost.
Inputs from a TAMU student in 2003 (I gathered this while I did research last year)
"If any of you are thinking of going to Texas A&M University Mays Business School, I strongly urge you to reconsider. I made a BAD decision in coming here. I received a lucrative scholarship that enticed me into buying the "no debt coming out of grad school." I did well on the GMAT and had some great options for my MBA and I took A&M? Anyone who is considering this school, think twice. The MBA Office (Wendy Flynn and Carol Scherer) are complete frauds, dishonest, and incompetent. If you are looking to go to a mediocre and very average school that does not place its MBA Program as its priority in the business school, then Texas A&M is for you. Go to a school, even if debt is involved, that will create a useful network, treat you like an adult, and offer you some options for a future career. Debt can be paid back and in this case, is nothing more than an investment for future return. Don't come here until some serious things change. Take it from me, a disgusted second year student. If you are making a career switch...beware of Texas A&M and the lies that Wendy Flynn and Carol Scherer will spout!!! Run away! Run away! Run away!!!!!"

Chandler, with 7 years exp and 720 you had a great chance of getting in 10-20 ranked schools esp Purdue, CMU, Maryland which are good in IT.
Are u willing to stay in IT? You should have applied to these 3 in R1.

Try schools in UK/Euro with your work ex. schools that come to mind for IT are
1) Cambridge - Judge and 2) Rotterdam. Maybe it's late but lob in app and see how it goes. You could still make it to these 2. There's also 3 good b-schools in Spain.

Hi Mayukh,
If you plan to come back to India (which can be a possibility after an MBA from Iowa) then NUS is better known to Indian students than Iowa. What's the cost differential between the two? Where else have you applied/admitted?
Think twice before going to Iowa/Carlson/TAMU or other 2nd tier schools. If US economy goes south then you are stuck with a MBA degree but little else.
Again look at Euro b-schools like Cambridge/Vlerick/Rotterdam/IE/Warwick?
Shoot in app even RIGHT NOW? Or else NUS will get you a IT job in Sing/India.

quite a shocking and rather emotional message that was! however, it didn`t contain any REASONS as to why TAMU is not recommended...it could be that this dude was seriously pissed with some one off incident or something? if you can, please post any reasons for the above opinions of this student, if you have it with you. thanks

Approvals and celebrations will rarely surround your inner decisions and choices to follow Personal Truth. You will be challenged and taunted: “Who do you think you are, anyways?” And, indeed, through your choices and decisions, that is precisely the question you are answering–to yourself.
