heyy..
awesome post..
in fact i was always contemplating the gmat thing..
was doing very well in the sims.. with a constant 97-98 percentile.. sadly.. cat was a different scenario.. and no calls and blah blah..

im graduating this april.. b.com final yr.. and ur post has given me confidence to take up the gmat.. what i want to know is how valid is a score in 2005 to be used in 2007? will top institutes not mind that the score is not too recent??? cause this is certainly the best time to take gmat what with cat nos still playing in the head!

further.. any idea on chances for top b-school in other places- apart from the us- like say asia.. without work ex.. and what are the job profiles like in singapore?? whats the procedure like..

do reply..

and congrats on ur score!

The GMAT scores are valid for 5 years, so go ahead and give it if you feel comfortable ... Applying two years after giving the GMAT is perfectly all right ... I asked the same question to some of my seniors from college who have been there and done that ... Having said that, some schools could get fussy about the score if it's too old ... Best thing would be for you to directly write and ask the Ad Com of the school you're interested in ...

MBA outside India without Work-Ex ... Not recommended ... Chances to get in are very slim, even with a great GMAT score (I'm talking about the top 15-20 US) ... Other schools you might make it, but Job prospects might be bleak ... Getting a visa, study or work, is definitely much simpler in Singapore than it is in the US ... Consider only the NUS or NTU MBA if you think of Singapore ... INSEAD in S'pore is definitely better, but way too expensive ...

Some other things I have learned by contacting current Indian students at NTU and NUS ... The BBA degree does much better than the MBA ... The companies which come to recruit at campuses, top names like McKinsey and Sachs, prefer the BBA students to the MBAs ... This could lead to some frustration when you search for a job there after graduating ... The Risk is definitely less in Singapore/Manila when compared to the US, but so are the returns ...

The choices before you are - Indian MBA vs. Asian MBA vs. US MBA ... You have to weigh them out according to your willingness to sign a loan for a fraction of a crore ... The uncertainty of getting a job ... and more importantly where you want to settle down later on in life ...

the uncertainty of gettin a job after graduating from where???? i have heard that people without industry links sit idle after graduating from places like HBS, Wharton and all.....
Can u please throw some light on it??

Getting a job should be no problem for guys from HBS, Wharton, etc! ... Even for people with relatively less industry links/contacts ... For every 1 company which refuses to give such people a job, there will be 10 companies which will die to have an Ultra-elite B-School alumni on their payrolls ... Brand does matter ...

If you manage to get an admit from the top 10 US Universities, blindly accept it! ... Even with no schol ... You'll never live to regret the experience! ... Your value will build exponentially a couple of years after you get into the industry ...

The uncertainty comes in for B-Schools in the 25-50 range ... And maybe also for some Asian B-Schools ... In the former, a lot of money is at stake, so I would'nt recommend it unless you've got some VERY decent grant ... For the latter, although the monetary risk is lesser (NUS MBA is approx 7 lakh for tuition and 3 for living), the job market is dicey ... You have to make your own luck ...

Like I mentioned in the last point of my last post, it all depends on where you want to settle down in the long run ...

Indian MBA - If you want to stay home and remain king, any of the top 10 Indian MBAs will serve you much better than any other degree ... Corporate India is growing fast, and you may be the next international business face of India! ... Plus you enjoy the luxury of being at home and leveraging your past networks ... Not just your professional links, but your personal links from school days, college days, family contacts etc etc ... You BELONG from Day 1 in the industry ...

Asian MBA - Asia is going to be the next economic power house of the 21st century ... It's not just India which is facing the reverse brain drain ... Lots of Chinese US B-School MBAs are returning back to their homeland to capitalize on the growing opportunities, regardless of the lower pay ... MNCs looking to make an inroad into Asian markets may look at local MBAs to provide a better insight into the business mindset ... That's where an Asian MBA might derive it's value from ... NUS/NTU does have brand value in this context ... Plus it's closer to home! (Singapore-Chennai is cheaper than Delhi-Chennai) ...

US MBA - Maximum value if you want to be a Global player ... Inspires a lot of awe in the international market ... Even if you don't make a job in the US (Or don't get a work Visa), using the international network that you would have built over your stay, you can get a job virtually anywhere in the world ... That's why getting into a school with excellent networking is such a high priority for me ...

On the flip side, if you get into a US School taking a huge loan, you can't exactly return back to India, if that is your intention ... Paying it off in Rupees will be murder ... So if you're considering the US option, get ready to bear the long term consequences of it ... Get ready to lead the life of an NRI ...

Many other factors which go into deciding where you want to do an MBA ... It's a very personal decision, and there is no unique formula to arrive at it (By pluggin in GMAT scores or Placement digits) ... This is a decision which will impact not only your career, but your social life - where you'll reside, where your kids will grow up and how far away from home you will be ...

I make it sound scary, no!! ... Relax ... That's why I say don't do an MBA immediately after graduating! ... You can't possibly know what you want! ... Take some time, work, and things will automatically become clearer ... I don't claim that I know what I want yet ... That's why I've decided to work for a couple of years more and try to find out ...

Ciao! ...

I would like to know how to get these materials.
PP's , Official Guide & kaplan CD's.
One of my frnz suggested to go for second hand items.

What do u think ?
It would be helpful if u could tell me how much money was spent in GMAT preperation.

BABA YOGA on the top! - 22-02-2005, 12:42 PM

Hi,

awsome posts from baba yoga in the thread!

Regarding the indian MBA, does anybody has any idea abt the MBA from IIMs via GMAT?
I wanna know -
1. What is the fee structure for a GMAT entry into the 2yr PGDBM at IIMs?
2. What is the min work ex(is it 7 yrs?) for the newly launched PGPX at IIM A?
3. Any other reputed institute in India offering MBA via GMAT (other than ISB, IIMs, MDI)?

Best of luck!
~Nits

KingCat ... Here are the details of the expenses incurred for my GMAT prep ...

1. Official Guide To GMAT - Rs.1200
2. Princeton Review Book + CD - Rs.500

The above stuff can be got from any leading bookstore ... With the CD, the cost of the Kaplan and Princeton books jump up by a few hundred bucks ... So if you have any friends/seniors who have already prepared, it's best to obtain at least the CDs from them ... Of course, I'm excluding the money I spent for CAT prep, even though I attribute my Quant score completely to the four months I prepared for CAT before giving GMAT ...

This is the stuff I got for free -

1. PowerPrep Software - download from MBA.com
2. Kaplan CD and ARCO book - From one of my friends

There is absolutely no problem in buying second hand stuff, as long as it is relatively recent (2002 and above) ... Don't settle for anything but the 10th edition of the Official Guide ... Plus there is loads of stuff you can get for free on the net ... Do some research ... I personally feel there is no point joining a coaching institute for GMAT, but that's my own opinion ... I have'nt attended any of their classes, so I can't comment on their effectiveness ...

Nits, regarding your third query ... ETS has a provision to send GMAT scores to the following institutes in India, apart from the IIMs, ISB and MDI ...

Amity Business School
Apex Institute of Management
Icfaian Business School
Indian Institute of Foreign Trade
Indian Institute of Social Welfare and Business Management
Punjab University
Spicer Memorial College
Tata Institute of Social Sciences
XLRI Jamshedpur

So I guess they must be accepting some students on the basis of GMAT scores ...

If anyone reading this thread has any information regarding Nits' first two queries, feel free to update us all! ...
