Talking GMAT - 750 (q-50 v-42) - 26-08-2007, 08:41 PM

ITS OVER!! cant believe wasted so much time over this !!
anyways since i picked up a few tips from this forum, time to give some.

BOOKS
---------
PR - best theory of all, did everything available, good if you are doing a crash course!
Kaplan - ok, skipped more than half of it, could have skipped altogether. has a lot of mistakes.
OG - well you have to do this for the sake of doing it!

ONLINE TESTS
-----------------
PR - 720(51, 39) - This was a pretty good estimate of my final score
Kaplan - 700, 650, 650, 640 - dont get worked up on the scores, its a known fact these ones are killers.
GPrep - 710 - The level of difficulty of this test is pretty close to actual GMAT.

AWA
------
Wrote two essays, one of each type, to get a good feel of the structure. Can skip it actually.

Timeline - four weekends, last one spent doing all the tests. I think could have done in 3.

What i think is important
----------------------------
1. DO NOT, i repeat do not, make silly mistakes in quant. Make a list of all silly mistakes you ever did during your prep and review it before the exam or something. 2 is both even and prime - got me an unbelievable number of times !!
2. In the end, it boiled down to more of an endurance test for me. Its very important not to get mentally exhausted.
3. Dont get worked up about kaplan scores.
4. Eat and sleep well before the exam. Believe in yourself !

Good luck!!

Cool Re: GMAT - 750 (q-50 v-42) - 26-08-2007, 10:53 PM

havent started on essays as yet!! top on my list of things to do

as for prep...
spent about 65% of the effort on english, mainly on SC. This is the only part in verbal involving some rules, so this is where you can improve the most. CR and comprehensions are mor eabout analytical abilities, which i seriously doubt you can do anything to in a month. read and re-read all the theory about SC, from all the books i could get my hands on. with sc, just practice practice practice. although its equally important to analyze your mistakes and not repeat them.

gmat maths is anything but difficult, its all about speed and avoiding traps. couldnt answer last 1 or 2 questions coz i ran out of time, but still managed 50. so i was never really worried about quant.

spent 3 solids weekends on studying from the books, one on taking all the tests. This timeline is extremely tight, so do it only if you have the discipline !!

Gprep is sample exam provided by gmac itself.

I didnt give toefl...it isnt required if your undergrad was from an english-medium university.

Re: GMAT - 750 (q-50 v-42) - 27-01-2008, 03:28 AM

Can anyone tell how the marking in GMAT is done,
I saw in this thread that the score is q-50 v-42 ,
I believe the questions in GMAT are q-41 and v-37 , then how is the above calculated.

thanks
