1.Until quite recently, American presidents lived in a world in which the public and private realms of their lives were largely separate, and the press cooperated in maintaining the distinction, and Americans judged national leaders without receiving, or expecting, intimate information about them.
(A) and the press cooperated in maintaining the distinction, and
(B) where the press cooperated in maintaining the distinction, and where
(C) for the press cooperated to maintain the distinction and
(D) the press cooperated to maintain the distinction, for
(E) in which the press cooperated in maintaining the distinction, and in which I think the answer should be A..
Use of where, for, no cojunction, in which seem inappropriate..
2.Water and resource management problems will be at the head of the legislature’s list of concerns for the coming session.
(A) Water and resource management problems
(B) Problems of managing water and resources
(C) Problems in the management of water and other resources
(D) Problems of water and other resource management
(E) Resource management problems, including water I will go for C...It follows standard usage..

As per Option A, the answer is Water and resource management problems. This changes the intended meaning of the sentence. The sentence wishes to convey that problems in management related to water and other resources. This meaning is brought forth by Option C.
Hope it helps. | | | | | The Following User Says Thank You to Abhi@IIMA For This Useful Post:

Hi,
Could somebody help me in choosing between "seems like"/"seemed like" and "looks like"/"looked like"?
Though in the Manhattan SC guide- they say when to use the expressions, they dont quite distinguish between the two.
For ex: He seemed like a nice guy at first.
Can we rephrase the above example as follows:
He looked like a nice guy at first.
Though it might not sound correct, whats the rule?

Hi friends,
I have my GMAT two weeks from now. I have been taking the cat tests for practice and have found one trend: SC always lets me down. I end up marking half the SC Qs wrong.
Since I dont have much time left. please suggest how can i mitigate the damage. I read manhattan SC pdf, attempted og11,og10.
Each time I analyse the exam and find misrable SC score, I quickly get into SC revision; but that has not helped much.
What else can i do to mend it? I dont even have a good set of SCs left to practice. Started with 1000 SC Qs, but they dont have explainations.
I definately want to improve my SC strike rate. please help me out.
Thanks in anticipation.

Guys I found a mistake in the answer of question # 2 of the 1000SC. It says A but in the OG 11 question #62 says D. So now I have a doubt in the followinbg sentence. But after further analysis I think that the answer in 100SC is correct. A recent study of ancient clay deposits has provided new evidence supporting the theory of global forest fires ignited by a meteorite impact that contributed to the extinction of the dinosaurs and many other creatures some 65 million years ago. (A) supporting the theory of global forest fires ignited by a meteorite impact that (B) supporting the theory that global forest fires ignited by a meteorite impact (C) that supports the theory of global forest fires that were ignited by a meteorite impact and that (D) in support of the theory that global forest fires were ignited by a meteorite impact and that (E) of support for the theory of a meteorite impact that ignited global forest fires and

in A,C and E, theory of global forest fires...in this 'global forest fires' sounds like the title of the theory, but its not. if u replace 'of' with 'that' it will makes sense. 'that' follows explanation of the theory.
between B and D, B doesn't have 'that' at the end which is essential to explain the 'effect' of the theory.
i hope this helps. | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
