My GMAT Experience 730(VA 39; QA 50) -
30-12-2006, 10:54 PM
I am sure no one would ever have had such a strange and sweet experience with GMAT.
Having just got graduated, I decided to attend a Bschool as soon as possible in 2005. Took my CAT. Whew! It was the biggest flop. I decided to re-start my CAT preparation for the following year, right ahead. This time I didn’t want to take any chance. Proper planning and execution was the key. Joined the test batch series of T.I.M.E and Career Launcher. So two exams per week with respectable analyses of the question papers was my strategy.
I strongly believe that GMAT and CAT, both are no more than similar exams that test math and English. Of course, there is a huge difference between the two in terms of the pattern and the level of difficulties. However, I don’t see any difference between the methods of preparation. This encouraged me to schedule my GMAT appointment in December, i.e., the immediate month next to CAT.
Believe it or not, it worked extremely well. Frankly speaking, I gave no additional preparation to the GMAT. All I did is a clear understanding of the structure of GMAT, what is being tested and is not. On the GMAT Day, revised a few basic concepts. And that is it: no Official Guide, no JJs, no 1000 SC/CR/RC and nothing else. The CAT prep has offered a big hand. Of course the “Princeton Review for GMAT”, that I used for my CAT had its significance, I would say. Finally, was graced with the blissful 730.
Final Score:
Overall: 730; 97th percentile VA: 39: 88th percentile QA: 50:95th percentile
Nevertheless, my approach may not be applicable to every one. Please do your homework before attempting it. To beginners, my strong recommendation for GMAT would be to start the preparation by reading the experiences of previous GMAT takers. Not everyone follows the same preparation approach. Devise one that you believe is right for you. Pagalguy and Scoretop are the best available online sources for resources.
I always had maintained documents/files that I constantly used to update as and whenever I get to know any new concept, however trivial it may be. Am convinced that it helps extremely. Attached is one such doc that I prepared for my verbal section. There is no single source or reference for it. Major chunk of it might be from the posts of other PUYS as well. Hope it helps.

Wishing all the best for future aspirants. And thanks to all the PUYS who have contributed indirectly.

Thanks Amit! Am still wondering when to apply. Positively, Would apply for the Fall 2008 batches. Am planning to apply to the NUS BSchool for the fall 2007, either.
BTW, read your 6 tips on your GMAT thread. Faboulous tips for beginners, I would say!
