Hi Fragrance!!
I can see that you very new to this GMAT thingy. I wud start by taking each of your queries.
GMAT is a comp adaptive test and it can be taken anytime of the year. You have to register for the test on the MBA.com web site. You need a passport to sit for the test, which is ur id. Check the website for more info. YOu can go thru some threads here which has lotsa info.
Secondly, GMAT is not CAT (common admissions test). I hav taken CAT and it certainly helps. Things to keep in mind here are:
Quant section is very tough on the cat...so if ur prep for quant is gud...u hav done the half work (only for the quant section) already. But every test has its own style and its very imp to get into the groove. You will have to practice it accordingly...but yes it helps a lot. most of the concepts are already covered in cat prep except statistics.
Pay special on DS problems. they are the tricky bit on gmat quant.
Verbal is altogether a diffi ball game. Its very gud. And SC and CR are very tricky. most it will be a new thing when u start doing the questions. But they can be mastered...thats the gud thing bout gmat that its fixed...so you are aware of the kinda questions and the format u r goin to see on the actual test...unlike cat...which throws in a diffi format everytime.
you can start by takin up any book and doing it in a planned manner.
hope that helps!!
cheers...ATB
