I am aiming for 730-750 in the real GMAT and will be giving it another 20 days. Planning to give 4 Kaplan CAT's, 3 more Princeton CAT's, 1 Cambridge CAT, 2 Powerprep and 2 GMAT Prep in the next 15 days.

1) Can junta give a rough range of scores i need to score in the above tests so that i can assume I am good enough for a 730-750. Guess in Kaplan my aim must be to score 650-670. Am I right? How about Princeton and others.?

2) What can I make out of my Princeton score? I found the paper pretty simple.

3) I knew one friend of mine who got 730 (Q50,V3 and another just 690 (Q51,V37). How come such a wide gap in final scores for such a small difference in actual Q & V scores?

4) How come people get different final scores though the break up in quants and verbal is same. Sometimes the difference is just 10 points, but at times i hav observed differences as high as 30. Then how is the final score calculated?

Gmatiers.. I would be grateful if Keya,Amit and others can throw some light on the above queries.

Cheers,
RPK
I agree with Amit. It's just not possible. Yes there was a case where 2 people got the exact same scores and one got 750, while the other got 760... but you'll notice that both ended up in the same percentile.
I can believe a 1%ile difference, but not more...

again, I can't say anything about Princeton.. I never did any of their stuff. Kaplan however, is known to be tough..... I panicked like hell about my Kaplan scores

hey keya,

congrats for such a good score. i needed ur advise

I am also preparing for GMAt while working. i started prep in early june but then had to go for some official work for 15 days. When i came back , i started with OG and finsihed it. I mean i started it arond 20th June and then finished it around 5th july. I started doing some extra materials also. My accuracy was between 85-90% in both RC and CR but 81% in SC in entire OG which i know is pretty low. But i think i am improving. But since last 2 weeks again there was a lot of work and i couldn't devote time for GMAT and just gave one kaplan test in last 2 weeks, nothing else. I will be able to start with my prep only after 16 August now as there is lot of work pressure at office till then. But i will be taking leave from 19th to 27th August and after that also i think work pressure will be little less. So i plan to give GMAT by September 15 now. Can you advise what material should i do and how shold i go about with my prep now. I really need to score above 750.
Please help me out.

btw, i read somewhere in the forum that ur articles got printed in Chandigarh Tribune. Do u belong to chd?

thanks

OK, let me clear up the Chandigarh Tribune part first :-)

I posted my profile in this forum and I mentioned that I had been a very active Choreographer during my MCA days from TIET Patiala. A kind gentleman called "Masala Dosa" said that my Choreo point was B***S*** and advised me not to make a joke of myself, and not to apply to Harvard with my 'C***' profile, but donate the money to feed the poor. Very altruist chap.

I replied to that, that my choreos were written about in the Chandigarh Tribune, where the journalist said that it was surprising that 'mere students' had managed to put up such an 'extravaganza'. That's it... later on I editied my post to remove that bit, because I decided his evaluation didn't really merit a reply.

And now that we have this bit out of the way, lets get down to stuff that realy counts :-)

I faced quite a bit of problem in my SCs too. I then analysed what were the root causes of the problems. My Achille's Heel was Idioms and Pronoun Reference. Can you analyse and tell me once which are your problem areas? Then I'll see if I can do anything to help there.

I think as far as material goes, you've covered all bases (Kaplan and OG11 + IMS quant were all I did). Use your last few days before the exam to build up speed. Speed is something that is (in my petty opinion) built up quickly, and lost quickly. So the last 10 days will count as far as speed goes. It would be better if you took the last 15 days off, rather than time off 'midway' to prepare. But then, that's just my opinion... I'm only saying this because it worked for me.

I don't think there is really much I can say about your Prep at this stage. As far as I can see, you seem to be doing everything right (do let me know the root cause analysis for your SCs though), and diong things pretty systematically.
And as for work, don't worry.... I took the last 15 days off, but the 15 days before that, I didn't get any time at all to study, and my scores dropped dramatically. But then, with a bit of practice, they turned out OK :-) So I really don't think you have anything to worry about.

Anything else, just let me know

thanks so much for the post. i will do the root cause analysis and then u the details this weekend. These days i only get to study on weekends since.
There was one more thing when i take RC's on paper they go fine, but on screen i somehow panic and then lose complete focus. So i end up scoring at a very low accuracy in RC's. But i have read ur post on RC's willl try to follow that.
Also i think your speed of doing VA section is amazing. You wrote you had 30 minutes left for last 5 questions. That is really an awesome speed. Actually, i always tend to fall short of time on VA. This maybe many a times i am not sure of my answers and also due to poor RC maybe. How can improve upon the speed part.
Sorry, i think i will keep disturbing till my GMAT

Dear Keya,

Congrats for the great score! Wish you all the best for the schol of your choice.

Here's my short intro - I am a compsci engr, 3.5 years of w.exp, working right now.
I plan to give 'it' in 3rd week of Sept. As for my prep, I have finished OG 10, Kaplan (without CD tests) and done 200 Q's of 1000 SC. For quant I didnt do any particular prep since I did it for CAT last year. On completing OG I found my accuracy between 85% and 90%, while keep time limit.
I definitely want to improve my speed but I am still about my accuracy.

Well, I read your posts and the one thing that struck me the most was ....your list of 250 Idioms. You have mentioned it marked a turning point for you in your verbal prep and I am sure it will do the same for me.
So can you please send it to me? My email is calm.juggernaut@gmail.com

If you have any other suggestions for me, please feel free to share the gyaan!

Best Regards,
Normalguy
