I started hyperventillating as soon as I saw my score... God Bless the Pearson co-ordinator who came up and advised me to click on 'End Exam'!!!

I'd like to thank everyone at PGuy for their support while I was going through my hysterics over my Kaplan scores. Your support helped me beat my long term nemesis....Lady Panic.

A lot of people have already posted their detailed GMAT experiences here, so I don't know whether another 'detailed GMAT journey' will be of any use or not to the people here. Still, if you'd like me to put in my two cents, I'll write out a post with all the minute details... just let me know.

Thanks again

Hey Keya,

Fantastic score!! Congrates madamoiselle!!!

I am thinking of appearing for it in 2nd week of Dec. The only problem is that I work 7 to 9 in weekdays and harldy hv any energy left after 9 to solve DS, CR etc questions.. I am sure u'll understand that. So i thought of joining Manhattan Review here in london which charges £800 for 28 sessions, 3.5 hrs each. Wud u recommend this option?? OR do you think i cud prepare on my own by ordering few books and study them?? Also, let me give u a bit info abt my academic bkgrnd. I am a commerce post grad.. Last time i studied maths was ten yrs ago nd tht even of low level since i was in gujarat then..I had statistics in my followinig yrs but tht again not tht high level..I guess this will help u understand my basic understand of these subjects..also, my schooling was non-english..Having said all this, i know it doesnt take away my right to aim high and score atleast 700 if not more...
Sincere advice sought!! Not much time left!!

Thnks

Hello A,

OK, the sessions would definitely make sure that you are kept in the groove of things. I personally took the IMS classes here in India to just make sure I did not loose track. And the materials that coaching institutes give are also good at times. I did my Quant basics from IMS.
Having said that, I also don't know how expensive this option will be for you... if it is something you can easily afford (I took the IMS because I was able to afford it!), then yes, coaching classes are good, since they do help to keep track when you have work that fills up your time and uses up all your energy.

But again, classes are no substitute for hard work and detailed analysis... which is what the GMAT does require. It's different for students who have just got out of college since they're still in the 'study' mode... but it's a totally different ball game for people who have been working for 3-4 years, since the whole attitude of sitting down with your books for 4 hours has to be re-learnt!!

I would suggest that before you join the classes or do anything, buy a few GOOD books, sit down and assess yourself. Where do you really stand? How far do you have to go? Which are the parts you think you can do easily? Which ones will be tough? How much time do you think you'll need (make this a very pessimistic estimate... give yourself about 20% more time than what you think you'll need)?
Then look at what the coaching offers... Does it help fill the gaps? How much? What additional help do you think you'll need?

After doing this analysis, you ought to be in a position to decide
What you need in terms of coaching and books?
When is the right time for you to give the GMAT ?

And if you still feel any doubts.... come back to us in PGuy

That's really a guiding response.

As far as money is concerned, I can afford it. But the question is whether it's worth spending!! May be i mentioned this earlier that wht they say is that they teach us some really nice techniques to deal with GMAT questions, techniques one wudnt normally find in the books. By saying 'they' i mean Manhattan people. If you have noticed in the forum here, ther is this person Kevin something who's CEO or something in this company.

Another reason why i am keen to join is that i dont have much time to sit and analyse the logic behing any any wrong reply i give..If somebody comes and shows me the technique, i wl b more than happy to follow it straight away. This doesnt mean I am not going to work hard but it's just the time factor really. I hope u understand..Wht do u reckon??

I appreciate your taking time to reply..

Ankit

Well, in that case, I would say go for it.... I've read Kevin's responses on this forum, and if the coaching is anything like his replies, it should be worth it!

Re: Cracked it!!!!!! 770 Q50 V46 - 13-10-2006, 06:03 PM

Hi Everybody,

Though this post was created by and meant for stalwarts of GMAT, I ask your opinions regarding my chance in getting thorough a respectable b-school as I didn't get a good score.

I sat for the test on 11th Oct at Kolkata. I got 680 (Q - 48, V - 35). I knew my nemesis could be the verbal section as I was never very much confident inverbal, and SC in particular (inspite of applying all possible gyans I could find in PG and at other sites). Keya Madam, I am sorry, I could not lift myself up in verbal despite all those suggestions. Sometimes it looked to me that all options in SC are correct. Whatever may be the cause, I crossed 40 in verbal once or twice in practice tests. So, I did have the lingering feeling that verbal could always pull me down.

Job Experience:
I am a B.E. (Mech. Engg.) from Jadavpur University, Kolkata. I have 5 years of
solid job experience in one of the most respected private companies in India. My extracurricular activities include photography, trekking. I do not have a very prominent social activity, though.

I am now in manufacturing sector. I intend to change my field of work to either finance or consulting.

I intend to apply for the regular courses in ISB, Great Lakes, CEIBS China, York University Schulich Canada and IMD Switzerland (aspirational!). Pls. give suggestions where else I can apply and comment on my chances in getting through (I know 80% job is not over yet). I am looking forward for your response.

OK, let me put it like this.... I still don't see why you should not be able to make it into a pretty good school. I can't comment on the schools you have chosen, since I haven't researched them, but again, I DO NOT think you're situation is as bleak as you think it is.

The reason being.... your SOLID 5 year work ex. Joy, this can create wonders. You're work ex can make or break your application far more than the GMAT score can.

If you can display in-depth thought, analysis, confidence, maturity, insight and passion in they way you talk about your experiences and the way they have made you who you are... buddy, you're through.

So look through those essay questions, and then tell me what you think of your candidature.

Keya, whatever you wrote is correct. Now I need to focus on the application part itself. Please suggest some other b-schools also where I can apply. Other frequenters to this post are also welcome to comment and suggest. ATB to everybody for successful apping.
