Hi folks!

Thanks alot, i am changing gears again. As for as my fanhood is concerned i am already fan of u guys -----Yaga,amit ,keya, spidey, simba, stigmatic(he lives near by, suchha helpful bloke)........ so i guess no body missed a fan.

though kaplan tests are real tough, the kind of question & analysis they contain makes it worth taking em.i hope to make the best out of it.

ATB to all those who are going to take the GMAT soon.

as for as amount of material is concerned, its matter of quality over quantity & lots of focus.

Cheers again......

Kaplan Strategy - 31-08-2006, 12:28 AM

Hi Keya,

I plan to give Kaplan tests after doing Kaplan 800/Kaplan 2006 edition books.

Can you please tell if there is any overlap of questions between the tests and the books ; in case of the overlap won't my scores get skewed?
I'm in a bit of soup as I've just 20 days to prepare for the GMAT and I've given only the PP tests and done the OG :( .
My scores are:
PP1 - 720(before doing OG)
PP2 - 720(after doing SC,CR from OG)
Can you please guide what should be the best strategy for next 15 days so that I can score near the 750 mark?
Needless to say, I would be grateful if any of you experienced guys here viz azeem, amitnsitian and others if you can give your views.

Thanks,
Harsh

Hi Harsh,

At this point I definitely recommend Kaplan 800. It has the toughest questions, and really good strategies, so it should help push that 720 above the 750 barrier. If you had more time, I would have said do both, but the Kaplan 800 takes aout 10 days to finish. Don't rush it... take it a lesson at a time, and do them thoroughly.

All The Very Best!!!
Keya

Yummy!!!!

You write very well girl and both of these strategies make abundant sense to me .... I plan to use the graphs.

H.

PS ... and now I know how did you managed a 6.0 as well.

PPS ... lets call the graphs and 20 questions in each section the 20-20 shall we!!??

I plotted two graphs... an accuracy graph, which was basically (Correct, Total) and a 'score' graph (Correct Score, Correct Total) using the above scheme... do you get what I mean to say?? (if not, let me know, and I'll post again)

Since I did them on different days (I used to do about 20 from each section every day... took me 7 days to finish the OG), I didn't get the kind of score the GMAT gets... but see, as the questions get tougher, if your prep doesn't get better, you'll keep getting more and more of the tough questions wrong... you're scores start dropping, you panic (very hard )

You know, the way we study, from school to professional life, is that we try to absorb the facts in what is written. We do this because we later have either to go give an exam which tests those facts, or to apply those facts in our work. That is the way we are conditioned to read.
And this is the biggest difference. For the GMAT RCs, you don't need to know what is written. You need to understand why it's written. Breaking out of the conditioned mode takes a lot of effort ( at least, it did for me), but believe me, it can be done if you just focus. The minute I used to lose my focus, I'd end up doing half the questions wrong. With focus, I've done even 96% correct.

So, when you start reading the RC, make a roadmap (this is a Kaplan Strategy. I've started my younger bro on it, and he swears it makes a difference).
In other words, as soon as you read the first para, stop and ask yourself... "what is the author trying to say?" The first para will undoubtedly be either the introduction to a viewpoint, or will present two conflicting view points, or will in some way give you a clue to what the author is leading up to. Try and define this in your own language, and keep it in your mind.
As you read each para from the second para till the last but one para, stop and ask yourself " What is he trying to say here? How does it tie in with the first para/para before this? Is he giving me additional information? Is he refuting something he said earlier? Is he giving examples? Is he laying down a hypothesis?"
When you read the last para, ask yourself " How does this relate to the intro para and the 'body' paras?

If you need to jot down answers to these mental questions, do that. I know I never was able to keep it all in my head.. and exam pressure makes my head a wind tunnel, so everything would get blown away anyway FPRIVATE "TYPE=PICT;ALT="

Once you've read it 'actively', you'll have a 'roadmap' for the entire RC.
A few more seconds, and a quick look through your roadmap will make you reasonably sure about what the author's main point is, what the inference/conclusions are, what the tone is, etc.
Once you start answering the questions with all 'activity' going on in your head, you'll start getting more questions right. Give yourself at least 4-5 days to get into this 'Active' groove.
Once you start answering more questions right, it'll build up your confidence...
And soon you'll be saying... "RCs?? Piece of Cake!!!"

Thanks A Lot Keya for the prompt reply. Now, I'll start doing KAP-800.

Hey, it'll be wonderful if you can answer the first part of my query too i.e.
Is there any overlap of questions between the KAP-800, comprehensive material AND The 4 Kap Tests, so that when I give the tests my scores are not skewed(like the overlap btw OG and Powerprep) ?

Thanks
Harsh

hey,
there are some overlaps, but very few not like ones in OG and Powerprep. So dont worry about that. Just go on...
