650 GMAT and 3.5 yrs experiance....Do i have a chance? - 07-07-2006, 05:11 PM

Hi friends!
I have been working as a software engineer in Tata Consultancy Services from 3.5 years (which includes the stint in onsite (US) for 1.5 years). Its a dream for me to pursue MBA in US.
I took GMAT today and scored 650. Obviosuly i am very disappointed with my score.
Quant (Scaled score - 48, Percentile - 86)
Verbal (Scaled score -31, Percentile - 61))
I know, verbal score is very bad. Although overall score is a bit decent, 61 percentile is horrible.
I have sent my scores to 1. Texas A&M College Station, 2. Univ of Washington, 3. Michigan State Univ and 4. Univ of Illinois, Urbana.
Now, I am really confused guys!! With this score and experiance, do I have any chance of making it to the Top 30-40 schools? or Shall I take GMAT again? I am not an exceptional candidate. So my essays will be like that of a normal IT professional.
Please let me know whether i have a chance or not. If you can, please tell me the univs i should be should be looking at.
Thank you.
Venkat

Venky,

The most honest advice that I can give to u is to give the GMAT again............there is lot of time to go as far as the deadlines are concerned.........most of the colleges don't care a damm abt all ur scores, they take the best one..........

I wud also not suggest u to aim for colleges in the top 40-50 types.Try to go for a better ranked college as u'll be spending a hell of a lotta money and wudn't like to end up in a situation where u don't have a job............ Take ur call though.

Chill !
Abhishek.

Thanks Abhishek!
It seems you are right. There is no harm in giving another try. If I get a better score than 650, that will be good. If not, I can stick to this 650.

Is there be a huge difference between schools ranked between 20 & 30 and schools ranked between 40 & 50. I did some research and couldn't find any big difference in the following attributes in a Top 30 college and Top 50 college.
1. Number of companies recruiting
2. Salary (depends on individual. There are students getting over $95000 in Top 40 to 50)
3. Facilities

If i get admission in any of the Top-50 colleges in US, I have decided to go for it in Fall 2007. Do you think it's a mistake?

Hi Vappara,

I got the same score as you just yesterday...650 isn't simple for 3+ yr IT prof [my profile as well]. Better try again...650 wont help..unless you dont mind spending [250 x No of apps ] to learn the appl-process.

Hi,

I think I can help. I think Sentence Correction is where ur loosing out . Go Thru Verbal questions. SC, CR specially . For RC even if you have a good reading and comprehending habit you shud be ok. Read and Understand every question from OG 11 and simultaneously go thru the answer explanations. Repeat it again. You will surely find imrovement in Verbal Scores. I personally feel that OG 11 is more than enough for Verbal. Yes, take the GMAT again. Book a date and work towards it.

( I am Santosh from Hyderabad. My area of concern is Math. I got 35 in last test. 46 in verbal. Taking GMAT on Aug 24th. )

All the best
Santosh
