Re: Ask Manhattan GMAT - 05-09-2006, 12:11 AM

Hi

I gave GMAT once last october. I got 40 in verbal, 47 in quant, and an overall score of 710 (94%tile). I read ur article on breaking 750, where u wrote that one needs 40+ in Verb and 46+ in Quant. In my case I have both but i'm far away from 750. So my question is has the test changed since Pearson vue has started conducting it? and consquently have the overall scores moved Downwards?

Now my second question is, Is it better to get the last questions wrong or to not attempt them? rather which is worse? because at times when i'm short on time ,i mark the last questions blindly thinking that i'll get penilised more for not attempting..... whats ur veiw on this? though i never want to be in that situation.... its best to know.

my third question, I'm aiming for 750+, how much time should u ideally spend on the first 10-15 questions, in order to get enuf time for the last questions?

Hello Bombay,
Here are the answers to your questions:

1. The test content did not change at all. There were some cosmetic changes (fonts, colors, etc.) and some logistical changes (you can only take it ever 31 days and you have laminated sheets instead of paper) but that's it. None of the questions changed.

2. A blank answer is worse than a wrong answer, so you should put something down at the end if you are short on time.

3. You shouldn't be in this situation. Don't spend extra time on the beginning questions. That will not help you. Spend the equal amount of time on each question. The beginning questions are not worth more than the ends ones.

Re: Ask Manhattan GMAT - 20-09-2006, 05:01 AM

Hi buddy,

Well, it's just been a day since I join this amazing space but believe me, I really liked the article that you posted. Thanks for this!

So, here I go...
I am trying to schedule my GMAT examination, so that I can start my MBA course, ideally, by June-August 2007. I am preparing with material from "Princeton's Review" and I am almost through with it... So, I seek some important feedbacks/clarifications from you...

1. Should I plan for GMAT in Nov; i.e. when I am giving CAT or sometime in April. Please note that, my first choice is by far IIMs (i.e. if they call me). I got ~94% last time... so, really trying hard to break this (95%) barrier...

2. Please suggest me some specific material for improving my score in the verbal section, especially sentence correction and RC. I'll going for Kaplan, shortly, once I am through with my Pricenton's material. Is there anything like Big Book for GMAT, similar to the one for GRE? Any other materials???

3. Kindly let me know few links that could me prepare the Letter of Recommendation (LOR) so that I can get it signed by my Project Manager. It would be great, if you can provide me with few of these LOR, in case you have some.

The celerity of your response is highly solicited! Thx!!!

Cheers...
Iesh.

Thanks for your note. You may be misinterpreting our strategy. We are not arguing that the initial 10 questions are not important (of course they are, that's 1/4 of the test!). We are arguing that spending significantly extra time on them is a major mistake for those aiming for a 700+ score. Why? Getting most of the LAST 10 questions wrong (in our experience, a very likely scenario for those who spend too much time on the early questions) will absolutely preclude one from a 700 score. I hope this clarifies things.

Also, as the weeks progress, I'll continue to post strategies and tactics on how we help our students achieve a competitive score on the exam. Our method is very unique (the academic approach is very different from the traditional test prep approach). As a result, our students average around 700 on the exam, our median student score is 710 and our mode student score is also 710 (not to mention that all our instructors have scored 750 or higher and one has scored 800, twice). Please keep an open mind as you read through our strategies because they are very different from the established norm.

As any "Pagal Guy" knows, the path less traveled is the one that leads to success! If you are trying to differentiate yourself to get into a top 10 b-school, you better not think/act the same as the other 90%, or you'll be lost in the crowd.
Kevin

Hello there,
your insight into GMAT scoring is pretty useful... I have a query regarding the eligibility criterion. I have a 15 year education with me unlike what the majority of aspirants come with - a 16 year profile. Which universities are likely to accept this? If we are taking a very low percentage, it does not matter how brilliant my GMAT scores turn out to be. Please advise...
