MBA Career prospects for IT professionals - 07-06-2006, 01:42 PM

Hi all,

I've done my btech in computer science and am currently working in an IT firm...

I'll be writing my GMAT this august..

Most of the schools asks specifics about why MBA, where do u see yourself 5 / 10 years from now... which actually got me thinkin...

Ideally i would like to switch careers entirely and focus on marketing ... But my background is totally non-business/finance... I know tht i would enjoy talking and convincing people ( my very humble & simplistic view of marketing:satisfie: ) than hammering away at the keyboard for some obscure code... which is not exactly the best motto to market myself to any Bschool

I know tht i want to be in management.. But should i be focusing on what exactly i want to specialize in at this point of time? Do Bschools actually focus on this during interviews or do they give you the space to decide later on ?

Ive heard tht some schools give you dual specialization iN IT and marketing.. that couldbe another option...

I know a lotof you out there are from IT and planning to do an MBA.. So what do you guys plan to do after an MBA.. Back to another IT firm with better designations or an entire switch in career....

Any comments/ suggestions /ideas.... please do post..............

Hi nisha,
I am also in an IT firm working with one of the largest Banks of the world. We are handling Bank's GCIB(Global Commercial Investment Banking) protfolio.

There is a remarkable similarity in our mindset and that forced me to reply promptly!!
I also want to get inot marketing & i love talking to people. I do say ..this DUMB COMP.. doesn't even react to the biggest of my emotions. But people do respond!!

Before my joining date(i had campus placement) and after my graduation, I joined as a faculty at one institute which trained students in the areas of communication & personality development. It was also coaching for CAT. Being a communication trainer we orgainsed seminars..esp for campus recruitment process. I was the part of marketing team also.

I lead the campaign at one city for the All India Mock CAT . I hired advt agencies , finalised the test venue and interacted with students for enrollment.
But then i moved to IT company as my joining date had come. But the IN-HAND cash i got was better than here(I am in the Most Admired Company of India!!).
But now working in finance domin(Investment Banking) ...I feel three options:
IT OR FINANCE OR MARKETING!!!
Be just clear about the MANAGEMENT !!!
Be flexible and dynamic!!!
Develop the skills required ...rest follows. IT company needs people for marketing & FMCG majors need people for IT management.
At the time of ur MBA, decide which profile jobs are being offered to you and choose the best.
ALL THE BEST for your dreams!!

Ah !
My first impression and answer Have you read "Snapshots from hell" Peter Robinson. Get hands on it once.

I think all of us have a vision (IT- Finance, IT-IB, IT- consulting ) The indan pool has these on the MBA plan.
Frankly there are so many other careers we are hardly aware of until we end up in the B school. I guess as we will go through the classes and look at options, our choices will change very often. ( VC, Private Equity management are just some names to mention )

It personally think its good to have a vision because it reflects your affinity to a particular field.

I guess the core curriculum at most leading business schools is the same , its your electives that determine ur specalization so you can always choose your electives meticulously to achieve the right balance.

When you say Dual degrees, you was reminded of the Joint Programs. Most schools have dual degree progrmes like MBA and Law, MBA and health care management. Personally I feel these are the ones that are dual in true sense .
Since u are tragetting marketing, i guess it will help to choose electives and most importatly your internship well and strike the balance.

@ me .. IT- Consulting OR IT-General maangement in Biotech industry.

Cheers
inblue

Me too..feel the same..Machines are too dumb..always act in the same way..when u want them diffrently.
But act in a different way(probaly HANG!!) when you want them to act exactly desired.
