GMAT 760 contemplating Masters in Finance - 30-05-2006, 05:02 PM

Hi guys,

I have about (...almost) one year of work-ex and I took GMAT about a couple of months ago. Got 760. Now, I think that the work experience that I have is not good enough and I am not going to app for MBA admissions this year.

However, I want to change my stream at this stage of my career; wanna move from computer science to finance. Can anybody throw some light on the kind of opportunities for Masters in Finance graduates in the US?

I am earning a fat package here... would M.Fin be worth it? I still intend to do my MBA after 4-5 years... AFTER the M.Fin

MFIN is good for people who want to switch to finance but dont have much work ex for an MBA. Although i feel that with a 760, you will be able to get into mba in a decent school if you waited for another year or two...but that`s your choice. There are different flavours of mfin, each is kinda narrow in scope and caters to one particular aspect. like for example, master of quantitative finance is all about math...masters in financial computing is focussed on the IT part...there are many such flavours...choose carefully. the 2 year masters in finance is more broad and covers almost everything in brief. So you gotta choose the appropriate course within mfin, depending on what you wanna do. Some MFINs will require GRE instead of gmat.

the flip side is, mfin wont give you a managerial job. It's a technical job...you`ll probably become an analyst or a number cruncher or an accounting guy...but not a finance manager or a CFO with an MFIN. mfin is quite a bookish course...you can actually pick up a book and learn everything on your own, there isn`t a huge value-add from the university's side as compared to an mba, where the university's approach forms the core of the MBA course.

overall i'd say, for a guy with 760 and a years experience, mfin is not recommended, unless it is from princeton or berkeley.

It Doesn't matter if you are a lion or deer, when the Sun comes up you'd better be running.

760 is indeed a good score. Now it depends on you.
Do you want to have an 'only fin' career. M Fin will be like MS in Anthroplogy. Too much of only finance.
My 2 cents
From the post it appears that u are inclined to Finance but " I still intend to do my MBA after 4-5 years... AFTER the M.Fin " then why not wait a little like 2-3 yrs.
In these 2 -3 years, make all attempt to rise in ur job and prove thru it that u indeed have made a deligent attempt to pursue ur interest in finance.
If u think u need formal education in Fin why not take up something like DBF ( diploma in Business Finance ) ICFAI has a good course. its 9 mths and good.

If any way u wanna add that MBA tag.. dotn jump in M Fin. rite now. Make the most of ur 2 yrs to boost up ur MBA profile.

The first Q MBA adcom will ask when you apply after M Fin is " you already have the necassary quaification to pursue ur career goal, why MBA after M Fin ". It will be though to present urslef on this to the B School.

that is correct. mfin covers finance in more detail and depth than MBA. if you do mba and then mfin, you can explain it to the adcomms that you have gained the broad perspective of finance thru ur mba and now you wanna gain in-depth knowledge of finance thru mfin. but doing mfin and then an mba will be like a downgrade instead of an upgrade in terms of knowledge. If you try to say that you wanna do an mba so that you can gain leadership/networking etc, that wont sound like a convincing story...why would someone spend 2 years and 30 lacs for networking and leadership?! on the other hand, If you do mfin now, you can look at accelerated mba or executive mba or part time mba after some years....but these typically require several years of work ex and arent as good as the full time mbas.

Thanks for the input, guys! I understand that MFin and MBA are not quite related. What I can gather from your arguments is that MFin is a 'lower-rated' course.

My reason in favour of MFin is that it would afford me a switch right now, whereas it would be more difficult to break into finance (and out of IT) after gaining 4 years or exp here. Also, it's near-impossible to 'do good work and show your potetial' in the kind of job profile I have. Max, you get promoted to a senior technical lead position in 3 years; and they hire MBAs where they need managerial skills. Going through the technical line takes a lot longer because they are primarily interested in what value you can add at the engineering end.

Plus, it is about varied experiences. I am 22, so I want to see more than just IT. I can afford the latency of MFin (1-1.5 years) at this stage. Of course, I would want a better paying job after the masters. Another point that comes to the mind is: do people with MFin rise faster than people in IT with a BTech? Depends on the company and individuals, of course. Still, there are general trends like "Comp Sci lands you a higher paying job than Mech"...
