Hi Arun

it does feel gud to score big time. i dont have great undergrads for whatever reasons and so needed a 750 atleast. everything else is a bonus.

the reason why i started this other thread is cause i want to limit myself to a few serious people;
1) I am not all the free while at work. in fact i expect to be more out of the office than inside from monday onwards (just some of the tag alongs that come with Supply Management )
2) I am not a gud teacher (i know that so trust me) and so i do not want to misguide people by telling stuff i dont know about. what i can do is guide people on to the resources, spell out strategies for people with some talent and in general boost their confidence

I noticed reachmonil is doin a great job but the problem with popular threads (i hope this doesnt become one free for all too) is that a lot of nonsense is written in excited moods and out of an urge to give an opinion on every topic that comes along.

Cheers

hey kunal,

i agree with u on this. there are lot of replies written in excited mood from the people, infact people ask questions to which they can easily find answers to there. infact i was also in the same category till sometime back but then i decided to search the forums and found a lot of useful information.

cheers
Ankush

p.s- will give u a pm on monday and call u....i just started with my GMAT prep this week.

i didn't go for the Kaplan per se (only Kaplan 800 - which is anyway on a different place altogether)

But OG is a must if not for anything than to check the personal benchmark to start with. I was advised to skip Princeton and so did not even try and touch it. so no comments on that either. but generally people do not recommend it for serious study and an aim of 700+.
BuT OG is a must. get back to it. I am not sure but does OG 11 have those bold faces questions? (I had OG 10).

Cheers

Re: 770! - Now we are talking :) - 24-04-2006, 06:35 PM

My Experience (in short):

Like i said earlier: The GMAT was on the 20th.

The Centre:
1) You cannot take in anything. period
2) no vending machines wud be available. but one water dispenser can be found. i took my diet pet bottles.
3) breaks are 10 mins each - one after AWA and other after Quant
4) formalities aren't much but everyone is taken in one at a time so time wud be spent in allotting lockers and assigning seats. i wud say be there by 8:30 if your time is 9:00
5) no unnecessary signing as was with ETS. only 1 digital signature with a biometric set-up (fingerprinting and digital snap)

The Start:
No codes etc are required for universities. just the names wud do. the search fucntion from Pearson even allows for search for abbreviations like MIT.

The Xam:
my AWA topics were
Issue:
on whether business leaders have more opportunity to change the course of opinion of a community or even nation
Argument:
effectiveness of a newspaper's advertising.
i must add that the two were tricky. havent seen the entire list so cant comment on a relative basis
Quant: Few Surprised here
Stats (median/mode etc.) : No question in the entire paper!
DS: tougher than ETS. for sure. no doubts about it
Word Problems: about the same level
ProbabilityP&C : i think i got only 1 question over here too
English: Much different from ETS
Bold-Face:
The bold face was a gud one. I wud not recommend Scoretop for ppl preparing for Bold faces. for one their examples are much tougher and also because i did not agree often with their choices. (i got only one)
Critical Reasoning: tougher than ETS, i think. but not by much
Sentence Correction: much clearer than ETS and therefore easier to tackle with. although everything has exceptions. but on the whole i wud say easier
RC: I got 5 passages (Yes i did )
2 of about 65 lines
2 of about 45 lines
1 of about 90 lines
as were expected. so i wud say not much different from ETS.

On the basis of the above i wud say that GMAT has changed ever since Pearson took over. maths was in general tougher. english was more or less of the same level. not easier as some might say.

Strategy and Material

i had only one strategy and that was to score high. but then that was mine and i was putting all that i cud.
for anyone else send me in your feedback and we can then ponder over it together.

material: i had more material than i cud handle but then again only one book (kaplan 800). have it in hard, rest of the stuff is in soft. so in case somebody needs it do check the links that follow in the later replies.

Cheers

Kunal

P.S. I think i will be helping you best if you have already started the prep or atleast serious about it and want to give your gmat in the next 2 months at the most. didnt take longer myself so cant see how i cud help others prepare longer
